The Inevitable Rejection
Genevieve
Tessa matched her pace to the heavy, echoing footfalls of the men ahead of her. She watched Maddox’s broad back as they traversed the long corridor leading to the executive wing, her analytical mind turning over the immediate situation. The tension radiating from him was a physical weight in the air. She calculated the sheer physical and psychological strain he endured right now. He had found his Goddess-Gifted mate. Vivienne was here, under his roof, breathing the same air, her scent flooding his senses. Yet Maddox was forced to stand in the same room, suppressing his feral instincts, without being allowed to claim her. The restraint required for a dominant Alpha to deny his biological imperative was immense. His shoulders were rigid, the muscles bunching under his tailored shirt with every step.
The puzzle of the afternoon clicked into place. The sharp, slicing pain Tessa had experienced in her left bicep hours earlier made perfect sense now. It was the exact moment Vivienne had touched him in the foyer. A biological flare of betrayal transmitted straight through their artificial bond. Vivienne had laid her fingers on Maddox’s forearm, asserting a possessive claim, and the magic binding him to Tessa had reacted with punishing force, sending a warning spike of agony through Tessa's nerves.
Despite the stinging betrayal still echoing in her muscle memory, Tessa felt a distinct wave of gratitude. Maddox was a strict adherent to the rules. He honored the legal constraints of their mating contract. He had not taken Vivienne to a hotel bed and had sex with her behind Tessa’s back. He hadn't stripped the she-wolf naked, buried himself inside her, and claimed her body while still legally tied to another. If he had fucked Vivienne before breaking the bond, the magical backlash would have likely killed Tessa. He endured the frustration, waiting to handle the politics and the paperwork first. For that basic level of respect, she was thankful.
Beta Vaughn and Gamma Declan flanked the heavy mahogany doors of the Alpha’s private office. Vaughn pushed them open, stepping aside to let Tessa enter the familiar space. She crossed the threshold, her practical hospital scrubs swishing softly around her legs, contrasting sharply with the opulent leather and dark wood of the room. Turning to Maddox, she offered a genuine, warm smile.
"Congratulations, Maddox," she said, her tone light and steady. "I see you found your Goddess-Gifted Mate."
Maddox rounded his massive desk and dropped into his heavy leather chair. His face was set in stone, a grim, unreadable mask that gave nothing away. "I have," he stated bluntly, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. "So we need to talk, you and I."
Tessa did not miss a beat. She stood in the center of the plush carpet, her posture relaxed, her hands resting casually in her pockets. "Why? I know what this is. Just reject me, Maddox, I’ll accept it," she replied with simple pragmatism.
Her words hung in the air, blunt and unvarnished. She knew the reality of her existence within these walls better than anyone. Eight years ago, she was sold to him in a sterile mating alliance to prevent a border war between their packs. No love was ever nurtured between them. She was merely a placeholder Luna. A warm body for his bed. A receptacle for his lust during ruts and heats, bound by a contract that demanded regular sex to legitimize the treaty. Their intimate moments were mechanical exercises in biological maintenance. He would enter her room, strip her down, and thrust into her until his rut was satisfied, but he never kissed her with affection. They never shared a meal outside of official functions. She was denied a proper mating ceremony. He paraded her out the morning after he took her virginity, announced her title to the pack, and that was the end of it. She lived in the separate Luna Suite, devoid of his true affection, a political asset functioning as a wife.
Maddox said nothing. He sat behind his desk, his brow furrowed in heavy disapproval. He stared at her, his dark blue eyes searching her face. He was waiting. It was obvious to Tessa that he expected a dramatic reaction. He was bracing for her to burst into tears, to scream accusations, to throw a jealous tantrum, or pitch a fit over the arrival of Vivienne. He wanted the emotional outburst. He expected the wailing of a discarded female to validate the weight of the moment.
Tessa flatly refused to give him the hysteria he seemed to crave. She felt no jealousy, only the cold, mechanical ticking of her clinical mind processing the next steps of her departure.
The silence stretched. A full, suffocating minute passed. The ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner grew deafening, measuring the beats of their standoff. Maddox remained paralyzed in his seat, locked in a staring contest, refusing to say the words he had summoned her to hear. He stared directly into her unreadable eyes, testing her resolve, waiting for her composure to crack.
Tessa decided to break the stalemate herself. If he lacked the words to execute the deed, she would provide them.
She took a slow, deep breath, squaring her shoulders. She looked him dead in the eye and spoke the formal words, her voice ringing clear and authoritative in the quiet office.
"I, Luna Genevieve Caldwell, reject you Alpha Maddox Thorne as my Mate."
The words acted as a metaphysical trigger. The invisible bond anchoring her soul to his began to tear apart. Tessa immediately gritted her teeth, a harsh hiss escaping her lips as the magic inside her chest shredded.
Maddox’s eyes snapped wide. Sheer, unadulterated disbelief wiped the stoic mask from his face. His jaw dropped a fraction as the shock of her initiating the break hit him. He had expected to discard her, to wield the power of the Alpha and cast her aside. He never imagined she would strike the match herself.
The pain amplified. It felt like a rusted hook dragging through her ribcage, pulling her essence out by the roots. Vala, her inner wolf, paced and snarled aggressively in the back of her mind, resisting the unnatural separation of their intertwined spirits.
Thirty seconds ticked by. Maddox remained frozen in his chair, paralyzed in shock, his eyes locked on her straining form. He did not speak.
"Accept it," Tessa gasped out, her voice straining under the mounting agony. Her hands balled into tight fists at her sides, her nails digging into her palms. "It hurts, Maddox. Get it over with, please."
His shock melted into a dark, heavy scowl. The frown lines deepened around his mouth, transforming his disbelief into sudden anger. Slowly, as if moving through deep water, he stood up from his chair. He braced his massive hands on the mahogany surface, his shoulders rigid, and gave her a stiff, reluctant nod.
"I, Alpha Maddox Thorne, accept your rejection Genevieve Caldwell. You are no longer my Mate and Luna."
The finality of the sentence acted like an executioner's blade. Tessa gasped loudly, the sound tearing harshly from her throat. Her hands flew up, clutching her chest as the essence of the Alpha was physically ripped from her spirit. The magical amputation hit her with the force of a wrecking ball.
Her knees buckled under the crushing weight of the severance. The room spun, the floor rushing up to meet her.
Before she could hit the ground, Gamma Declan was there. He moved with swift, fluid precision, catching her shoulders to bear her dropping weight. He immediately rolled his soothing, medic-like charm over her aura, blanketing her shivering form in cool, stabilizing energy meant to knit fractured minds.
Despite Declan's expert intervention, the physical torment was shockingly severe. Tessa clamped her eyes shut, fighting a wave of blinding nausea. The pain was far worse than she had ever anticipated for a bond forged solely through contractual sex. There was no emotional intimacy tying them together, no shared dreams, just the biological friction of two wolves performing their duty. Yet, the tearing of the magic felt lethal, slicing through her nervous system.
She sank fully to her knees on the thick carpet, her breath coming in ragged, shallow pants. She forced herself to breathe through the agonizing minutes. On the side of her neck, Maddox's physical mating mark began to self-destruct. The skin heated to a blistering temperature. The intricate filigree of the mark burned itself away from her flesh, searing the nerve endings. Tessa bit the inside of her cheek to keep from screaming, tasting the sharp tang of copper on her tongue.
The fire slowly died, leaving behind a cold, empty ache. She reached a trembling hand to her neck. The sensitive, raised scar tissue was gone. Nothing remained but two numb, pale puncture wounds where his fangs had broken her skin and claimed her eight years ago. The mark was dead.
Forcing her head up, Tessa blinked away the blur of pain. She looked across the desk.
Maddox was leaning heavily against the hard edge of the wood. His knuckles were bone white from his death grip on the desk. His other hand was curled into a fist, pressed hard against the center of his own chest. He was physically mirroring the exact agony she was enduring. His chest heaved with ragged breaths, his massive frame trembling under the backlash of the severed connection.
His dark eyes never left hers. He watched her intently, analyzing her every twitch and breath, searching for a crack in her serene composure.
Tessa found her footing. Her legs shook, but she locked her knees and stood tall. She gently pushed the Gamma's supportive hands away from her shoulders, regaining her autonomous space.
"I’ll be alright, Declan. Thank you," she murmured, her voice remarkably steady despite the sweat cooling on her brow.
She turned her gaze back to her former mate. He was still staring at her, still pressing his fist to his heart.
"Maddox, you should go and claim your Goddess-Gifted," Tessa advised, her tone conversational, stripped of any malice. "It will resolve your pain quickly."
Maddox stared at her. The muscles in his jaw ticked. "And you?" he asked, his voice thick, grating with what sounded shockingly like genuine concern.
Tessa smoothed the front of her rumpled scrubs. "I’ll be fine. I understand our mating alliance, and I will follow it to the letter," she assured him.
Her clinical mind was already shifting gears, building a timeline. The contract stipulated she had exactly twenty-four hours to vacate the territory upon the dissolution of the bond. The clock was ticking down. She needed to pack her clothes, gather her medical journals, and walk out the door forever.
"You should go and be with your Mate," Tessa continued, projecting calm certainty. "She’ll be happy we’re over, and you can claim her. She can finally claim what is hers rightfully by the Goddess."
Maddox’s frown deepened into a harsh glare. He was clearly baffled and deeply frustrated by her serene acceptance of her newfound freedom. The lack of devastation in her eyes seemed to agitate him more than the physical pain of the rejection. He stood there, vibrating with a confusing mix of relief and unrecognized anger.
Tessa did not linger to analyze his bruised ego. She smoothly pivoted away from the desk, turning her attention to the Beta standing quietly by the door.
"Vaughn," she addressed him, her voice brisk and professional. "If you could meet me in the foyer in say an hour, we’ll finish it off properly, while Maddox is marking and mating his Goddess-Gifted Mate."
Beta Vaughn stiffened. He looked from his Alpha to the woman who had served as the pack's mother figure for the better part of a decade. He swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing in his throat. He gave a slow, somber nod.
"Yes, Lu…" Vaughn stammered, catching himself at the last second. He forcibly swallowed the honorific title he had respectfully called her for the past eight years, correcting himself with a tight, constrained breath. "Tessa."
