A New Awakening
POV Kaelia
The precise moment my head broke the surface of the freezing river, I sucked in the crisp, icy air like a starving animal. The sudden oxygen burned my lungs. I gasped, choking on river water and adrenaline. The dark, swirling current tugged at my heavy dress, trying to drag me back down to the muddy depths. My soaked hair plastered across my face, heavy and blinding, sticking to my numb lips. I treaded the water, letting the biting cold seep deep into my bones. The frost on my skin was a sharp, undeniable truth.
I was alive.
Oh goddess, I was actually alive.
My mind was razor-sharp. The memories did not fade into some hazy nightmare of the afterlife. They stayed. They carved themselves into my waking consciousness with terrifying clarity. I retained every single detail. I remembered the agonizing screams tearing from my throat as fire consumed me. I remembered the layered betrayals that had stripped me of my dignity, the cold eyes of the people I had called family. I remembered the vivid, phantom pain of the exact moment I had driven a hunting knife directly into my own chest, pushed to suicide by the treachery of my chosen mate and my deceitful sister.
It all rushed through my head in a dizzying torrent. But instead of crushing my spirit, the weight of those nine past lives ignited a blazing inferno in my chest.
A wild, unhinged laugh bubbled up my throat. I pushed a trembling hand through my wet hair, slicking it back from my eyes. My ribs ached with every breath, yet I kept laughing. The sound echoed over the rushing water, manic and free. I had done it. I finally had my much-desired second chance. The board was reset, but this time, I knew every single move they were going to make.
"Miss Kaelia!"
A deeply familiar, trembling voice cut right through my laughter. I stopped. I blinked through the droplets clinging to my eyelashes, my heart dropping at the sound.
Turning toward the rocky shore, I spotted the gathering crowd. The people who had watched me suffer for lifetimes. My older brothers stood tall among the whispering servants. Vane was already crouched low on the muddy grass, fussing over Giselle. He brushed the wet hair from her face, his shoulders tense with panic. She was putting on a perfect, pitiful display.
But my eyes bypassed all of them. I locked onto the woman standing near the water's edge.
Linnea.
My fiercely loyal personal maid. Her face was exactly as I remembered it from the early days, before the cruelty of this pack wore her down. She was crying openly, wiping tears from her cheeks with shaking hands. She leaned toward the water, desperately begging me to come back to safety.
"Miss Kaelia, what are you still doing in the water? Please! Come out before you get sick. Please, come out!"
I stared at her. My lips parted. "Linnea," I whispered. Her name felt heavy and strange on my tongue after so many years of blood and ruin.
For a moment, I couldn't move. The weight of seeing her alive rooted me in place.
"Miss Kaelia, please come here!" she sobbed, stepping dangerously close to the slippery stones.
I snapped out of my trance. I pushed through the sluggish, freezing current, fighting the numbing cold as I swam toward the stone edge of the shore. My limbs felt like lead, but I forced them to move. I grabbed the slippery rocks, hauling my shivering body out of the river. Water poured off my heavy dress in thick sheets, pooling on the grass beneath my boots.
The moment I stood on solid ground, Linnea rushed forward. She threw a thick, wool blanket over my trembling shoulders. Her arms came around me in a fierce, tight hug.
"Thank the goddess you are okay," she sobbed into my shoulder, her voice shaking with pure relief. "I was so worried about you. Are you okay, Miss?"
Her genuine warmth seeped into my freezing skin. It grounded me. For a split second, I smiled. I wanted to lean into her. I wanted to return the embrace and tell her everything would be different now.
But before I could even lift my arms, Linnea gasped. She abruptly pulled away, her entire body stiffening in sheer terror. She took a fast step backward, snatching her hands back as if she had been burned. She cast her eyes downward to the muddy ground, her shoulders trembling with a new kind of fear.
"I... I apologize for hugging you," she stammered, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "I didn't mean to improperly touch a Moonborn. Forgive me."
She looked as if I might strike her down for showing me basic kindness.
Her fearful retreat struck a profound, agonizing chord in my heart. The thick blanket suddenly felt like ice. I stood there, shivering in the wind, staring at the woman who had sacrificed everything for me. I couldn't blame her for flinching. This was my fault.
In my nine past lives, I had callously and blindly pushed this devoted maid aside. I had ignored her genuine care, desperate for the approval of a family that despised me. I had favored the venomous snakes like Giselle, mistaking their twisted manipulation for love. I had treated Linnea like a burden. Yet, across every single lifetime, she had never once abandoned me. When everyone else turned their backs and left me to rot, Linnea stayed. She had bled for me. She had died for me, repeatedly, without a single second of hesitation.
Looking at her terrified, trembling form now, I made a silent, ironclad vow.
I would never repeat that tragic mistake. I knew exactly who my real enemies were in this life, and I knew who my true allies were. Linnea deserved infinitely better than the cruel fate I had dragged her into before. I would brutally ensure she received the respect and protection she was owed. Anyone who tried to harm her in this life would answer to me.
The tender, heavy silence between us shattered.
"Moonborn?" a nearby servant sneered openly.
I turned my head, pulling the blanket tighter around my shoulders. A group of maids stood a few paces away. They were huddled together, wearing smug, disdainful expressions. They didn't even try to hide their disgust.
"What is this bitch saying?" another servant muttered, rolling her eyes. "How could a cursed girl with two-toned hair be considered a Moonborn? Miss Giselle is the true, pure descendant of the priestess. Not this freak."
I stared at them, my face an impassive mask. I let my eyes drift over their mocking faces, taking in their arrogant postures.
Suddenly, a nasty, high-pitched voice echoed clearly in my head.
*Look at her staring at us. Every time I see that ugly, cursed hair, I feel sick to my stomach. She should have just drowned in the river and done us all a favor.*
I blinked. My gaze snapped to the maid standing on the far right. She was glaring at me with narrow eyes, but her lips were motionless. Not a single sound had left her mouth.
My eyes wildly darted between the gathered crowd in absolute shock. My heart hammered against my ribs. What was happening? How did I just hear her speak?
I quickly deduced the situation. This was not a standard pack mindlink. Mindlinks required the Alpha or Luna to grant a formal bond, and these were low-ranking servants. They didn't have access to open pack channels. Even if they did, the tone was wrong. It wasn't a projected message. It felt like I was eavesdropping on a private whisper. I was intercepting their internal thoughts.
*Huh, why is she looking at me like she can hear what I am thinking?* another woman's voice rang out inside my skull. Her face paled, her expression faltering as she stared back at me. *Imagine if she could read minds. Hah... that would be dangerous for everyone.*
Gasping aloud, I stumbled back half a step. The realization hit me like a physical blow. The goddess hadn't just sent me back; she had unlocked a profound new power deep inside me.
"Is that it?" I asked myself, the words tumbling out of my mouth before I could bite them back. "Can I truly read people's minds?"
The secretly mocking maid heard my muttered question. Her face drained of all color in an instant. She stumbled backward in a pale, terrified panic, her boots slipping on the wet grass.
"H-how... what did you say?" she stammered, raising her hands to cover her mouth.
Her sudden panic was abruptly interrupted. Heavy, authoritative strides pounded against the earth. The servants instantly snapped their mouths shut and bowed their heads, parting like the sea.
Torin was marching forward.
He left Giselle's side, his massive frame closing the distance between us in seconds. His eyes blazed with unfiltered fury. He didn't say a word as he reached me. He just pulled his arm back.
His hand forcefully lashed out.
*CRACK.*
He struck my wet cheek with a sickeningly loud, resounding crack. The impact snapped my head to the side. The sting of the blow burned across my icy skin, radiating down my jaw.
Before I could even catch my breath, Torin aggressively grabbed the drenched fabric of my dress, balling it in his massive fist. He physically dragged me close, yanking me up onto my toes until his face was inches from mine.
"How dare you harm Giselle!" he roared, a deep growl vibrating from his chest.
My mind calmly processed the assault. In my previous life, this exact slap had been devastating. I had been a weak, pathetic girl desperate for my older brother's love. That single, brutal strike had caused my face to swell so severely that I spent an entire week confined to the pack hospital. I had cried myself to sleep every night, wondering why I wasn't good enough.
But now? Now my soul was deeply insulated by the unfathomable agony of enduring countless, horrific deaths. I had been burned alive, stabbed, betrayed, and torn apart across multiple lifetimes. I knew what real pain was.
Compared to the torment of my past lives, this physical blow felt like nothing more than a minor bruise. I could easily swallow it. I didn't cry. I didn't tremble. I didn't even flinch. I just stood there, suspended by his grip, feeling the chill of the wind against my stinging cheek.
I slowly and deliberately raised my head. I let my icy eyes meet Torin's furious, aggressive gaze. I stared right through him, unblinking and untamed.
"What do you think you are doing?" I asked.
I dropped my voice to a deadly, chillingly low register. The sound was devoid of emotion, flat and lethal. It sliced through the howling wind.
Torin physically froze. The raw anger on his face morphed into a split second of profound hesitation. His grip on my dress loosened by a fraction. He was deeply unnerved by my unnatural, chilling composure. I wasn't acting like the cowardly sister he loved to torment.
His lips remained firmly sealed, but his underlying confusion betrayed him instantly.
*What the hell is this?* his inner voice echoed crystal clear in my mind. *Why is she so calm? She should be crying and begging for forgiveness. What is happening?*
I read his exact thoughts without breaking eye contact. My unyielding silence stretched on, suffocating him. Enraged by my coldness and his own inexplicable fear, Torin exploded verbally to cover his internal panic.
"What am I even doing?!" he shouted, spit flying from his lips. "What are you, stupid? Are you blind? Can't you see what you did to Giselle? You are not even scared or ashamed! Why would you maliciously push her into the freezing river? Are you jealous that she is better than you? Let me make this clear. If anything bad happens to my precious sister, I will personally kill you!"
I watched his explosive outburst with an expression of total, chilling indifference. My face was a mask of stone. I didn't bother defending myself. I didn't bother screaming that I had been drowning too, or that Giselle was the one who had staged the entire thing. Arguing with fools was a waste of breath. Let him yell. Let him threaten me. His words held no power over me anymore.
My icy eyes slowly drifted past Torin's broad shoulder. I focused on the grass behind him.
Giselle currently lay perfectly still on the ground. Vane was hovering over her, patting her pale cheek and desperately attempting to wake her from her supposed swoon. She looked like a fragile, broken doll. Her breathing was shallow, her eyes shut tight.
I focused my newly awakened power, locking onto her supposed unconscious form. Instantly, her thoughts pierced my mind, echoing crystal clear in my head.
*Ha. She absolutely deserved that brutal slap,* Giselle's inner voice gloated with sickening sweetness. *This will prove no one loves a cursed girl like her. I am going to stay unconscious just long enough to manipulate my big brother Torin into killing Kaelia. She should just die. She needs to die right now.*
Hearing this venomous plot, I almost laughed out loud.
A dark, knowing smirk visibly tugged at the corners of my lips. My sweet, precious sister. She was perfectly playing the helpless victim on the outside, while maliciously scheming in total silence on the inside. It was a brilliant performance. She knew exactly how to twist our brothers around her little finger.
Too bad she didn't realize I now held the script.
I stood there in the freezing wind, the wet blanket clinging to my shivering body, and stared at her motionless form. The sting on my cheek was a steady reminder of the war that had just begun.
I decided to wait. I would stand right here and see exactly how long Giselle could maintain this pathetic performance before I ripped the stage out from under her.
