Unfamiliar Intimacy
"When?" Damian’s deep voice sliced through the suffocating silence.
Serena blinked, momentarily thrown off balance. It took her brain a second to catch up and realize he was asking about the exact timeline for their legal separation.
"We can file the paperwork and proceed with everything the moment I get discharged from here," she replied, keeping her tone flat and unwavering.
"Very well," he said.
That was it. A simple, detached agreement. He turned on his heel and strode out of the VIP ward. His tailored suit jacket didn't even brush the doorframe as he exited. He didn't ask what the doctors said about her brain injury. He didn't ask if her agonizing headaches were fading. He didn't ask why she was even admitted to the hospital in the first place. He walked away as if she were a dismissed employee rather than his wife.
A month dragged by in a haze of medical checks and physical therapy. The sharp scent of antiseptic became a permanent fixture in Serena's nose until the doctor finally signed her discharge papers.
Early that morning, Tessa bustled around the private hospital room, zipping up duffel bags and folding Serena’s casual clothes.
"Congratulations on your freedom, Serena!" Tessa chirped, her eyes shining as she tossed a magazine into a tote bag. "Let me treat you to a massive meal today. We need to celebrate getting you out of this sterile cage."
The genuine joy radiating from the young assistant chased away the lingering gloom in Serena's chest. She managed a soft smile. "I should be the one taking you out. You're the one who practically lived in this room looking after me. Thank you, Tessa."
Tessa paused, her hands freezing on the zipper. Her bright expression shifted into something fierce and serious. "Don't say that. You shouldn't even be thanking me. You saved my life, remember? If it wasn't for you, I don't even want to think about where I'd be right now. Probably locked in some basement or shipped across the border."
Serena listened quietly as Tessa recounted the story. Three years ago, Tessa had run away from a suffocating, arranged marriage forced upon her by her strict parents. Young, sheltered, and naive, she had her money stolen on her first day in the city. Desperate and lost, she was targeted by a human trafficking ring. They nearly succeeded in dragging her into a van. Serena had noticed the commotion, intervened, and pulled Tessa to safety. Learning the girl had nowhere to go, Serena set her up in an apartment and hired her as a personal assistant.
Hearing the story felt like listening to a movie plot about a stranger. Serena couldn't recall the adrenaline or the protective instinct that drove her to save Tessa, but she appreciated the fierce loyalty staring back at her now.
A sudden realization hit her, making the smile fade from her lips.
"Tessa," Serena started, glancing at the empty chairs in the corner of the room. "Has anyone else come to visit me over the past month? Beside you, I mean. Don't I have parents? Siblings? Friends?"
Tessa averted her eyes, suddenly very interested in a stray thread on the bag. She cleared her throat. "Well... maybe they just didn't catch the news about your car crash. You see, after you got married, you stopped contacting your family. You isolated yourself."
Serena stared at her lap. She abandoned her whole world for a man who couldn't even stand to look at her.
Late that night, Serena sat propped up against the headboard of a massive king-sized bed, flipping through a hardcover book.
The Sinclair Mansion was a sprawling estate. Tessa had driven her here, guiding her through hallways designed by world-class architects, filled with priceless art and imported marble. Yet, to Serena, it felt like a museum. Cold, empty, and void of any personal warmth. She felt zero security inside these expensive walls. Her memory was a blank slate, and this house was just another unknown territory.
*Clack.*
The sharp sound of the bedroom door opening echoed through the quiet room. Serena’s head snapped up. Her muscles tightened in instant alert.
A tall, imposing figure stepped over the threshold. Damian. He had loosened his tie, the silk fabric hanging undone around his collar.
"Why are you back here?" Serena demanded, closing her book and setting it on the mattress.
Damian caught the wary, defensive look in her eyes. His thin lips curled upward into a slow, sarcastic smirk.
"What?" His voice was a low, melodic rumble that sent a strange vibration through the quiet room. "Are you trying to play hard to get again?"
The sheer arrogance of the question hit Serena like a physical blow. The words were mocking, laced with a familiar disdain.
"Playing hard to get?" Serena repeated, letting out a dry laugh. "Mr. Sinclair, I just spent a month in a hospital bed piecing my identity back together from an assistant and a diary. I've forgotten everything, including whatever delusional feelings I harbored for you. What makes you think I still want you? Do you really believe I'd waste my time playing games with a man I'm about to divorce?"
Damian's amusement vanished. His dark eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. He stared at her with a heavy, piercing intensity, stripping away her defenses layer by layer.
The weight of his gaze made Serena’s skin prickle. She forced herself to keep eye contact, her fingers curling into tight fists over the blankets.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" she snapped, unnerved by the silence.
"Just confirming," Damian said flatly, stepping further into the room. "Confirming you aren't pretending to lose your memory to manipulate me, just like you pulled stunts in the past."
Serena rolled her eyes, refusing to take the bait. "Did you come all the way to my bedroom just to insult me, or are you here to tell me the divorce papers are ready to sign?"
Damian held her gaze for three agonizing seconds before speaking. "It’s Senior Sinclair’s birthday party tomorrow night."
Serena frowned. "So?"
"As Mrs. Sinclair, you are required to attend. We aren't divorced yet," Damian stated smoothly, unbuttoning his cuffs.
Serena calculated the timeline. Today was her first day out of the hospital. The party was tomorrow. There was zero chance they could finalize the legal paperwork and sever their marriage in less than twenty-four hours. Besides, her diary made it clear she brought assets into this marriage. She wasn't about to walk away empty-handed just because he wanted her out. Asset division took time and lawyers.
"Does your grandfather know I have amnesia?" Serena asked.
"No," Damian replied, dropping his cufflinks onto the dresser.
Serena stared at him in disbelief. "And what exactly am I supposed to do at a dinner party where I don't know a single face in the room?"
"That," Damian said, turning his back to her, "is not my problem."
Without another word, he walked into the en-suite bathroom and shut the door.
Twenty minutes later, the bathroom door clicked open. Steam rolled out into the bedroom, carrying the sharp scent of mint and cedarwood body wash.
Damian stepped out. He hadn't bothered to grab a bathrobe. A single white towel hung low on his hips, clinging dangerously to the sharp V-line of his pelvis. Water dripped from his damp, messy hair, tracing paths down his broad shoulders and sliding over the defined ridges of his chest. His skin was pale and flawless, stretching over hard, dense muscle. He possessed a body carved to perfection, boasting a prominent eight-pack that drew the eye straight downward.
He stood there, unhurried, running a smaller towel through his wet hair.
Serena froze. Her breath hitched in her throat as she stared. She couldn't help it. The sheer masculine presence in the room was overwhelming.
Damian paused. He lowered the towel from his head and caught her staring. His dark eyes locked onto hers.
"Have you seen enough?" he asked, his voice rough.
Serena snapped out of her daze. Her heart pounded against her ribs. She quickly tore her gaze away, fixing her eyes on the opposite wall, desperately trying to project calm indifference.
But Damian didn't miss the red flush creeping up her neck and staining her cheeks. His lips quirked into a cold, arrogant smirk.
"Mrs. Sinclair, don't you think you're laying it on a bit thick?" he mocked, taking a slow step toward the bed. "It's not like you've never seen a man before. You've slept with one. Who exactly are you trying to fool with this shy, innocent act?"
Serena's jaw clenched. She gritted her teeth. Every syllable out of his mouth was designed to humiliate her, testing her patience. Did he really think she was still the old Serena? The pathetic woman who would swallow her pride and let him walk all over her just for a scrap of his attention?
He was a raging narcissist. He needed a reality check.
Serena threw the blankets off her legs and slid out of bed. Her bare feet hit the cold hardwood floor. Instead of retreating, she closed the distance between them. She stopped inches from his damp chest, close enough to feel the heat radiating off his bare skin.
She tilted her head and batted her eyelashes, forcing a sickeningly sweet, flirtatious smile onto her face.
"Well, there's no one else in this room but you," she purred, tracing a finger lightly in the air between them without making physical contact. "So naturally, I'm putting on a show... for you."
She took one more step forward, practically pressing into his personal space. She stood up on her tiptoes, bringing her lips dangerously close to the shell of his ear.
"Didn't you say I'd do anything to attract your attention?" she whispered ambiguously, her breath grazing his wet skin. "What's wrong? Didn't I try this exact move on you before, Honey?"
The word 'Honey' had barely left her mouth when Damian's demeanor snapped.
His large hand shot out, gripping her waist with bruising force. Serena gasped as he yanked her forward. Her body slammed hard against his solid, wet chest. He hoisted her up off her feet, his arm wrapping around her like an iron band.
"Hey!" Serena shouted, her fake flirtation shattering into instant panic. She was caught off guard, her hands flying up to grab his bare shoulders for balance.
Before she could process the sudden shift in power, Damian spun around. He tossed her through the air.
Serena hit the mattress with a heavy bounce, the breath knocked out of her lungs. She scrambled to sit up, but Damian was already there. He lunged over her, grabbing her wrists and slamming them down into the pillows above her head. He pressed his heavy, muscular body down, caging her beneath him and pinning her firmly in place.
