The Anniversary Betrayal

Cora Vance stood frozen in the dim corridor outside her own master bedroom. Her knuckles turned white as she gripped a velvet jewelry box containing a pair of custom platinum cufflinks. The sweet, heavy scent of the vanilla anniversary cake in her other hand made her stomach churn. Today marked their first wedding anniversary. According to her original schedule, she should have been boarding a flight to Oakhaven right now. Instead, she had canceled her business trip at the last minute to surprise her husband, bringing expensive red wine, a cake, and a bouquet of fresh flowers.

The surprise, it turned out, was all hers.

Through the narrow gap of the ajar bedroom door, a familiar female voice drifted into the quiet hallway. "Declan, I got my divorce finalized last month. So, when are you going to do the same? You cannot keep pushing this back forever. Let us just get it over with. Prolonging this dead marriage helps no one."

Cora stopped breathing. She instantly recognized that voice. It belonged to Declan’s department manager at the firm. For the past six months, Declan had constantly complained about working late, claiming he needed to ingratiate himself with her to secure a promotion. Now, the true nature of his late-night overtime lay bare before her eyes.

"There is no need to rush," Declan Lockwood replied. His tone carried a casual, relaxed indifference that sent a sharp chill down Cora’s spine. "The divorce is just a matter of time."

Cora tightened her grip on the cake box until the cardboard buckled. *Just a matter of time.* When he proposed, Declan had promised to love her forever and care for her for the rest of their lives. He had sworn he would wait for her to overcome her past emotional trauma. He always insisted he did not mind their separate beds and was willing to do whatever it took to reopen her closed heart. She had finally lowered her defensive walls, ready to consummate their marriage tonight.

"Then why wait?" the woman pressed, a hint of impatience in her tone.

"It is not that simple," Declan sighed. "If I bring the topic up right now, it is way too abrupt. I need to figure out how to frame this situation so she leaves of her own accord. I cannot risk her taking my assets in a settlement. Let me secure the finances and transfer the properties first."

Acid rose in Cora's throat. The oppressive shock paralyzed her for a fleeting moment, but it rapidly transformed into a sharp, icy vengeance. He did not just want to betray her; he was deliberately plotting to leave her destitute.

A hot spike of anger urged her to kick the door open and smash the anniversary cake over their lying faces. But her survival instinct held her back. Confronting them right now would only give Declan the chance to cover his tracks and hide his money. She needed solid leverage.

With calculated silence, Cora set the wine and cake down on the hallway console table. She pulled out her phone, stepped into the direct line of sight through the door gap, and adjusted the camera focus. She snapped several clear, undeniable photographs of the two figures intertwined on her bed. She made sure their faces and the messy sheets were visible. Once the digital proof was saved safely to her secure cloud drive, she turned on her heel and walked out of the condominium.

Downstairs, Cora dumped the gifts into the large trash bin by the main gates. She flagged down a passing taxi, pulled open the door, and slid into the backseat. The city lights blurred through the window.

Before she could process the dull ache in her chest, her phone buzzed in her pocket. The screen flashed relentlessly.

It was her mother-in-law, Myra Carmichael.

Cora frowned. She considered ignoring the call, but the device continued buzzing against her leg. Feeling a deep surge of annoyance, she answered and pressed the phone to her ear.

"Cora! What is the meaning of this?" Myra’s shrill voice blasted through the speaker. "I pulled strings to get you an appointment with the city’s top fertility specialist this afternoon! Standing him up is one thing, but how dare you not pick up my calls? Unacceptable!"

Cora rubbed her throbbing temples. The Lockwood family had never viewed her as a human being. Coming from a humble background, she was nothing more than a cheap incubator to them. They expected her to feel immense gratitude for the mere chance to breed for their wealthy bloodline.

"If you refuse to bear children for the Lockwood family," Myra ranted on, her tone dripping with venom, "you need to state your intentions clearly and divorce my son right away. There are plenty of capable women out there waiting to take your place. Women who actually know their duty!"

The mention of the Lockwood name made Cora’s fists clench. The raw images of Declan in bed with his boss flashed behind her eyes again. Her fingers gripped the edge of the leather seat.

"You want a divorce?" Cora interrupted. Her voice was stripped of its usual warmth, coming out deadly and flat.

Myra paused, caught off guard. "What did you just say?"

"You can rest assured, Myra. I will divorce Declan," Cora enunciated every syllable with lethal precision. "There is no need for you to keep harassing me about this marriage anymore."

"You ungrateful wretch!" Myra shrieked. "You think you can just walk away?"

Cora let out a dry, humorless laugh. The lingering sting of betrayal vanished, leaving only pure spite. "Oh, and since you want grandchildren so much, I will bear them."

She paused, letting the silence stretch for a fraction of a second.

"But they will not be from Declan’s seed."

Myra gasped loudly over the line. "You despicable woman! What nonsense are you talking about? Are you out of your mind?"

Cora did not care to listen to another insult. Declan had already broken their vows and defiled their bed. She had every intention of returning the favor before the ink on their divorce papers even dried.

Cora abruptly ended the call and looked to the driver. "Take me to Elysium Lounge, please."
