Stealing the Spotlight
Through the strobing neon lights and the deafening bass of the crowded Opalbay nightclub, Weston stared at the figure in the striking red dress. He stood at a discreet distance, leaning against a high-top table, his jaw practically hitting the sticky floor.
"What the heck!" he shouted over the pounding electronic music, shaking his head in sheer disbelief.
Declan, who was standing beside him with a drink in hand, leaned in closer. He raised his eyebrows, struggling to hear his friend over the noise. "What's wrong with you?"
"Valerie didn't take a single cent from Dominic."
Declan threw his head back and laughed loudly, the sound mingling with the chaotic club atmosphere. "Who fed you that garbage? If she didn't drain his bank accounts, how is she covering everyone's tabs tonight? The alcohol flowing through this place alone has to cost at least three million. Just look at her. Does she look like she has three million sitting in her pocket without Dominic's backing?"
Weston shook his head again, his gaze still intensely fixed on the woman across the room. He wouldn't have believed it himself if it hadn't come straight from the source. "Dominic just told me over the phone. Zero assets. She walked away with nothing. She's paying for this all on her own."
The amused smile dropped from Declan's face in an instant. He stood dumbstruck, blinking at the vibrant, energetic scene before him. "What the heck?"
Across the vibrating dance floor, Valerie stood by the neon-lit bar, radiating a magnetic energy. Her sharp eyes scanned the massive room and eventually locked onto the familiar faces occupying a VIP booth in the distance.
What the hell. She cursed her abysmal luck. She rarely ever stepped foot in a nightclub, preferring quiet evenings at home, yet the universe decided she needed to run into Dominic’s elite childhood friends on her first official night of freedom.
Noticing her sudden shift in demeanor, Melanie bumped her shoulder playfully and handed her a brightly colored, frosty cocktail. "Why the long face? Reflecting on your miserable, pathetic past and feeling relieved that you're finally free from that cage?" she teased, raising her voice to be heard over the heavy bass.
Valerie rolled her eyes, letting out a dramatic sigh of exaggerated exasperation. "The only thing I actually regret is spending my hard-earned money like this!"
She took a sip of the drink. The fruity, sharp liquid burned pleasantly down her throat, settling with a warm buzz in her stomach. She hated blowing her own cash on massive club tabs, but tonight was an exception. A celebration of her newfound liberation. Still, being acutely aware that her ex-husband's judgmental, whispering friends were lurking just across the room grated on her nerves. They were probably waiting for her to shrink back, to cower in a dark corner like the timid, submissive wife she had played for three agonizing years.
She refused to give them the satisfaction. She would not be their pathetic laughingstock for tomorrow's elite gossip circles.
Valerie downed the rest of her strong drink in one smooth, confident gulp. The heavy glass hit the wooden bar with a sharp clink. A fiery, unyielding glint sparked in her eyes.
"Shall we dance?" she asked.
Melanie’s eyes lit up with fierce enthusiasm. "It's been a while since we ruled a dance floor. Let's go. We're going to be the brightest stars in this place tonight."
Without wasting another second, Melanie grabbed Valerie's hand and dragged her straight toward the brightly lit, massive stage at the center of the club. Pushing past the sweaty, grinding bodies, Melanie leaped up the steps and marched right up to the DJ booth. She boldly snatched the microphone right out of the surprised man's hands.
"Listen up, everyone!" Melanie's voice boomed through the massive club speakers, cutting through the heavy music and silencing the ambient chatter. "A great evening to all of you! Let me introduce a generous, amazing friend of mine, Valerie!"
The crowd erupted into a deafening roar of cheers and whistles, raising their glasses high in the air.
"She's paying for every single person's drinks tonight!" Melanie continued, strutting across the stage with the natural charisma of a star. "But that's not all. To properly celebrate her brand new, beautiful life, we shall bring you an unforgettable performance! Let's get this party started!"
Melanie tossed the mic back to the DJ and signaled him with a swift hand gesture. The overhead lights shifted instantly, changing from harsh strobes to a seductive, vivid purple glow across the platform. The other dancers on stage instinctively backed away, clearing the center space. From the ceiling above, sleek metal dance poles descended, locking into the stage floor with a definitive metallic clank.
Valerie looked at the silver poles gleaming under the neon lights. For three stifling years, she had meticulously maintained a gentle, guarded, lady-like facade. She had swallowed her pride, contained her temper, and played the obedient, flawless wife for a man who never looked twice at her. Tonight, the cage was open. She finally embraced her true, fiery, and unrestrained nature.
The heavy, sensual beat of a new track dropped, sending vibrations through the soles of her heels. Valerie and Melanie moved toward the poles.
Decades of friendship and years of shared dance practice kicked in instantly. They didn't need a rehearsal. They moved in perfect, seductive sync. Valerie grabbed the cool metal, circling it with a fluid, captivating grace. Every step she took was deliberate, radiating confidence and undeniable allure. The two women mirrored each other, their bodies swaying to the slow rhythm. They approached each other, fingertips tracing light, tantalizing paths over the other's arms before spinning gracefully away. The crowd roared in loud approval, captivated by the mesmerizing, synchronized display.
However, from the sidelines, a shrill voice shattered the trance.
"Melanie! Have you lost your damn mind?"
Brenda, Melanie's strict manager, stood near the edge of the stage. She was waving her arms frantically, her face pale with a hyperventilating panic. The shocking sight of a massive A-list celebrity openly grinding against a pole in a public venue was a terrifying PR nightmare unfolding in real time.
Sobering up instantly under her manager's terrifying wrath, Melanie froze in her tracks. She threw a quick, apologetic glance at Valerie, swift slipping away into the shadows and darting off the stage to face the music.
Valerie barely noticed her friend's abrupt departure. The rhythm had already taken over her body. She remained deeply, intoxicatingly engrossed in her liberating performance. The music pumped through her veins, washing away the lingering frustration of her past. She stepped closer to the pole, reaching high with both hands. She swung her body, gaining momentum, and confidently wrapped her slender, toned legs around the cold metal.
She threw her head back, aggressively flipping her long, flowy hair. The vibrant stage lights caught her features—her eyes sharp, flirtatious, and dangerous. She climbed the pole effortlessly, moving with the feral, captivating grace of a wild cat. She arched her back, letting an undulating wave roll through her core. She looked like a wild, vibrant rose blooming under the neon lights, demanding to be seen.
At that exact moment, the heavy club doors swung open.
Dominic stepped into the chaotic, vibrating venue. The air was thick with the heavy scent of alcohol, expensive perfume, and sweat. He pushed his way through the dense crowd, his jaw clenched tight. The words Weston had spoken over the phone still echoed in his mind, fueling a dark, restless energy in his chest.
He looked up toward the source of the crowd's deafening cheers.
He stopped dead in his tracks.
There, bathed in colorful spotlights, was Valerie. The supposedly graceful, timid woman he thought he knew was currently twirling around a silver pole. Her fluid motions were undeniably alluring and dangerously flirtatious. She spun around the metal, her body soft, flexible, and provocative. The luxurious fabric of her red dress flew up with every rapid rotation, exposing the length of her fair legs and mesmerizing the cheering, captive crowd below.
Dominic's chest tightened painfully. A heavy, uncontrollable rage flared inside him, burning hot and fast. His intense eyes tracked her every movement. This was the woman who had spent three years fetching his coffee, speaking in soft, measured tones, and keeping her eyes lowered in his presence. Now, she was commanding the attention of hundreds of hungry, staring men, putting on a wild show just hours after signing their divorce papers.
His hands balled into tight, white-knuckled fists. A possessive, thundering fury consumed him, turning his expression terrifyingly dark. He stood amidst the sweaty crowd, immovable, his aura radiating a lethal chill that made the people nearest to him unconsciously step back.
On stage, Valerie executed a flawless, rapid spin. She slid down the pole smoothly, the red fabric swirling around her thighs like a flame. As she brought her feet to the floor, she leaned back against the metal to strike her final, breathtaking pose. Her chest he heave slightly as she caught her breath, the music fading into the background of her pounding heart.
She opened her eyes, scanning the dark room.
Her gaze locked onto a tall figure standing near the entrance, just a few meters away.
She spotted him.
Dominic stood frozen in the crowd, his eyes filled with a murderous, stormy rage.
Valerie stared at him for a brief second. Retracting her gaze with pure, chilling calmness, she gracefully pushed herself off the pole. She didn't flinch. She didn't scramble to cover herself. She ignored his towering, dark presence and stepped down from the elevated stage, her heels clicking softly against the floor.
She walked back to their secluded corner, making her way to her panting friend.
"That was awesome!" Melanie teased, though she looked a little guilty for running off. She handed Valerie a fresh glass of juice. "Pretty lady, I can be your pole if you need one."
Valerie took the juice and lightly flicked Melanie's forehead. "Don't think I'm letting you off the hook for ditching me up there."
"My bad! I'm sorry!" Melanie whined, rubbing her forehead. Then, she noticed Valerie's damp skin. She opened her arms for a hug but was immediately rejected.
"Don't hug me. I'm sweaty," Valerie said smoothly, taking a sip of her cool drink.
Melanie dropped her arms, then leaned in close, her eyes darting nervously toward the entrance. She eyed the furious man cutting a path through the crowd. "Do you know that Dominic's here?" she whispered frantically.
"Of course I do," Valerie replied smoothly, her voice devoid of emotion as she looked down at the icy drink in her hand.
Melanie gaped at her, bewildered by her friend's composure. "When did you realize he's here?"
Just as Valerie opened her mouth to deliver her answer, a freezing, lethally cold male voice sounded from directly behind her.
"Step outside. We need to talk."
