Chapter 8 Out of the Shadows

Smartphones buzzed in unison across every floor of Pinnacle Entertainment. A chaotic uproar erupted through the company’s internal group chat. Gossip spread like wildfire. Messages flooded the screen, all sparked by Cleo, the ground-floor receptionist. She claimed CEO Pierce Vance's secret lover had waltzed right into his private office. The employees typing frantically at their desks remained oblivious to the corporate earthquake that had just shifted the ground beneath their feet. The entire company had silently changed ownership.

Upstairs in the plush top-floor executive suite, Rowena scrolled through the endless stream of notifications. She viewed her upcoming entry into Pinnacle as a strategic military operation. She needed to learn the ropes of the cutthroat entertainment industry, and sneaking into the lower ranks as a mere talent director provided the perfect cover. Pierce’s vast network would guide her in the shadows. More importantly, observing the staff dynamics from the ground up would allow her to weed out corrupt, problematic employees from the inside out.

Downstairs in the grand lobby, Cleo leaned over the sleek marble front desk. She ignored the buzzing group chat to ogle the handsome executive assistant approaching her station. Tristan Farrow strode forward, his gaze fixed on her. Misreading his unblinking stare as a prelude to a date invitation, Cleo tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear. She smoothed down her uniform and flashed her most practiced, sugary smile.

"Mr. Farrow," she purred, leaning closer to showcase her collarbone. "What exactly can I help you with today?"

Tristan stopped in front of the desk. His neutral expression turned frigid. He offered no hesitation and no mercy. "You are fired."

Cleo’s sugary smile vanished. "What?"

"Pack up your belongings and leave the premises immediately," Tristan ordered, his voice echoing off the marble walls for the other lobby staff to hear.

Her heart plummeted into her stomach. The blood drained from her face as she stared at Tristan's unyielding posture. A sudden, burning realization struck her. The mysterious, gorgeous woman she had mocked earlier. That woman must hold unimaginable power within these walls. Stiffening in crushing humiliation as her former colleagues watched, the ruined receptionist grabbed her phone with trembling fingers. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she dialed a number, desperate for a lifeline.

Meanwhile, upstairs, Pierce refused to let his little sister attend a high-society banquet looking anything less than flawless. He dragged a protesting Rowena out of the office for a glamorous, exclusive makeover. Tonight's upscale event took place at Riverstone's premier seven-star hotel, The East.

By the time dusk settled over the glittering city skyline, the grand hotel entrance bustled with activity. Elite socialites, powerful politicians, and ruthless business moguls gathered along the red carpet. The ambient chatter of the crowd amplified when the roar of a sleek Lamborghini pierced the evening air. The sports car pulled smoothly up to the curb.

Kingston Thorne stepped out, his tailored suit cutting a sharp figure under the flashing camera lights. He moved to the passenger side and offered his hand to Bianca Loxley. Envious whispers swept through the well-dressed onlookers as the couple walked the carpet together.

"Mr. Thorne looks incredible. Who is the woman clinging to his arm?"

"They look like a match made in heaven. I am so jealous!"

"Is she the wife he kept hidden from the public eye for three years? She is finally making her public debut. This is so sweet!"

Bianca soaked in the jealous stares of the upper crust. She lifted her chin, her ego swelling. As the illegitimate child of the Loxley family, she had spent her life watching the elite treat her like trash. She remembered the sneers and the turned backs. None of that painful history mattered now. In her delusional mind, Kingston was destined to marry her. Soon, she firmly believed she would wear the crown as Riverstone's number-one socialite.

Right at the zenith of Bianca's silent triumph, a commotion broke out near the front gates. The flashing lights of paparazzi shifted away from her in an instant. A globally limited edition Rolls-Royce Dawn glided to a halt right at the start of the carpet.

Pierce Vance stepped out of the driver's seat. Famous across the city for being ruthless and unapproachable toward women, his towering, dominating presence drew audible gasps from the stunned crowd. He flashed a rare smile, turned back to the luxury vehicle, and offered his large hand to the hidden passenger inside.

Hundreds of curious necks craned forward to catch a glimpse.

A pair of slender legs strapped in glittering black diamond heels appeared from the luxury car. The crowd held its breath as a woman boasting an hourglass figure stepped onto the red carpet. She wore a custom, form-fitting black mermaid gown that accentuated every curve.

The mysterious woman lifted her head to face the flashing cameras. Her stunning, otherworldly beauty stole the collective breath straight from the lungs of the audience. The elites fell silent, terrified that speaking might break the spell she cast over the venue.

Standing just a few short steps away on the red carpet, Bianca's triumphant smile shattered into a million pieces. She stared in sheer shock at Pierce's glorious companion. The flashbulbs blinded her, but she could not look away from the face of the woman she thought she had defeated. Her voice trembled as the name slipped from her pale lips.

"Rowena?"
