Cruel Mercy

Marcy’s POV

"Bring her forward. I need to see what I'm looking at."

The cold, husky voice of the Alpha King echoes through the cavernous hall, sending deep vibrations right through my trembling bones. Before I can even brace myself, the massive guard behind me shoves me forward with brutal force. My boots catch on the polished marble floor, and I stumble, my knees crashing hard onto the cold stone. I collapse directly at the tips of the King's polished leather boots.

I stare at the gleaming black leather for a fleeting second, drawing in a ragged breath. The intoxicating scent of fresh rain, musky amber, and fire-inducing spice wraps around my throat like a physical tether. I gather the fleeting courage left in my battered body, lifting my heavy head to look up at the man seated on the obsidian throne.

My breath physically catches in my throat.

He is devastatingly, breathtakingly handsome. His piercing, ice-blue eyes hold a calculating magnetic intensity, pinning me down and staring straight into the shattered fragments of my soul. Dark chestnut hair is pulled back into a sharp, tight man bun, drawing stark attention to a jawline that looks like it could cut glass. The scruff on his cheeks matches the dark shade of his hair, framing perfect lips set in a harsh line.

He leans forward, resting his massive arms on his thighs. The movement causes his rich silk shirt to pull taut across his heavily muscular chest. Through the unbuttoned collar, I can clearly see the dark ink of a fierce eagle tattoo peeking out, riding the hard lines of his pectoral muscles.

Inside my head, my wolf, Sable, goes crazy. She howls and paces in overwhelming delight at the proximity of our true mate. Her primal joy crashes against my ribs, demanding I submit, demanding I bare my neck to the man meant to cherish us.

But as our gazes lock heavily onto one another, reality shatters the illusion. His sharp jaw visibly clenches in intense displeasure. A deep scowl mars his perfect features. The beautiful, cold Alpha King is undoubtedly my destined second-chance mate, and it is instantly, painfully obvious he is far from pleased about the moon goddess's pairing.

He rises from his throne. His towering frame casts a long, terrifying shadow over my frail, trembling body. His dark, overpowering Alpha aura rushes into the open space between us, pressing heavily down on my shoulders and forcefully bending my spine into physical submission. I cannot hold his gaze. My chin drops toward my chest, yielding to the raw, suffocating power rolling off him in waves.

"What is your name?" he demands with a sharp bark, the sound cracking like a whip through the silent room.

I struggle to breathe under the crushing weight of his presence. I barely manage to force air through my constricted throat. "My name is Marcy, your majesty," I whisper, my voice cracking on the final syllable.

He steps down from the dais, closing the distance until the heat of his body radiates against my chilled skin. He leans closer, his tone transforming into a harsh, grating sneer.

"Marcy," he tests the name, letting it roll off his tongue with pure disgust. "The filthy rogue who dared to blindly cross into my sacred territory. Do you understand the severity of your actions? Brutal death is the customary and expected punishment for such trespassing."

I stare wide-eyed into his icy blue eyes, my heart slamming a frantic rhythm against my ribs. A cruel, mocking smile slowly plays on his perfect lips, twisting his handsome face into a mask of pure malice. He enjoys my terror.

He dramatically pauses, letting the heavy threat hang in the air between us.

"However," he says, his voice dripping with dark amusement. "Consider yourself extremely lucky. I am feeling merciful today."

A fragile flicker of hope ignites in my chest, only to be snuffed out in the very next breath.

"Instead of the executioner's blade, you will serve within my castle walls," he decrees, his eyes flashing with a ruthless glint. "You will be a lowly, unseen personal servant. Consider it a chance at redemption. Fail in your duties, and the physical consequences will be severely agonizing."

My hopeful heart plummets straight into my stomach. The mating bond hums with a desperate need for affection, yet his words slice through that magical tether without hesitation. He does not want me as a cherished mate. He only wants to degrade me into a servant. The second chance the moon goddess granted me is nothing but a twisted joke.

Accurately reading the sheer, crushing devastation painted plainly across my pale face, a cold, humorless laugh escapes his throat.

"Oh little rogue, you didn't think I would take you as my mate, did you?" he taunts mercilessly, pacing slowly around my kneeling form like a predator circling wounded prey. "You see, I am supposed to take a bride. But the Elder Council stubbornly refuses to let me crown the specific woman I desperately want to make my true Queen and Luna. They demand I follow the sacred law and wait for the mate fate assigned to me."

He stops right in front of me again. His eyes glint with a dark, manipulative spark.

"But I think I just found the perfect, twisted solution to my political problem," he states.

Hot tears sting the corners of my eyes, blurring the edges of his intimidating silhouette. I brace myself for the final blow.

"Your job would be to pretend as my Queen and Luna in public while fulfilling my needs in private," he commands, his deep voice leaving no room for argument. He grabs my chin, forcing me to look up into his cold eyes. "From now on, I OWN YOU!" he growls with feral intensity.

The words echo in the throne room, completely shattering my lifelong, desperate dreams of being loved, cherished, and protected by a true mate.

"I would do to you what I please," he continues, his grip tightening painfully on my jaw. "Go against me, and I will kill you like an animal. You will wear the title of my Queen and Luna. You will smile, wave, and nod in public. But in private, you will be nothing more than property."

He drops his hand, leaving my skin burning from his rough touch. Before my traumatized mind can even begin to process the crushing, suffocating weight of his tyrannical decree, the sound of light footsteps echoes across the marble floor.

A stunningly gorgeous woman steps gracefully out from the side of the throne room. She possesses an effortless elegance, her flowing, jet-black hair cascading down her back like a waterfall of midnight silk. Her pristine gown trails softly behind her as she approaches the dais.

The moment Torin registers her presence, his entire demeanor shifts instantly. The cold, ruthless predator vanishes, replaced by a man looking at the center of his world. He reaches out without hesitation, wrapping his large, muscular arm securely and affectionately around her slender waist. He pulls her flush against his side, his touch screaming a deep, undeniable intimacy that makes my stomach churn with fresh agony.

The beautiful woman rests her delicate hand on his chest, right over the eagle tattoo. Her dark eyes sweep over my kneeling, battered form with feigned curiosity.

"Torin," she purrs, her voice smooth and sweet. "Who is she?"

My fated mate does not even bother to look at me. He dismisses my entire existence with a casual wave of his hand.

"A little rogue problem we encountered at the border this morning," Torin replies smoothly.

A little rogue problem. The mate the moon goddess crafted specifically for his soul is nothing but a problem to be dealt with.

Deeply stung by the callous dismissal and fueled by a brief, reckless spark of pride, I force myself to speak.

"I'm Marcy, his mate," I blurt out loudly, my voice trembling but clear. I meet her dark gaze head-on. "And you are?"

The woman's eyes widen in brief shock. The sweet mask slips, revealing a flash of fiery rage before it quickly smooths over into a look of sheer condescension.

My sudden defiance earns me an immediate, merciless verbal reprimand. Torin's ice-blue eyes turn lethal, locking onto me with the promise of violence.

"Watch your words in my castle if you still value keeping your head attached to your neck," he warns strictly, the dangerous rumble in his chest making the floor vibrate beneath my knees.

He gestures to the woman at his side. "Lysandra is your absolute superior. She is my intimately chosen mate. You will respect her."

He tightens his hold on Lysandra's waist, stepping forward to lay out his twisted master plan.

"You will be officially crowned as Queen and Luna as the law dictates my fated mate should be," he explains coldly. "But Lysandra will maintain the true power. She will take over all Luna duties in the shadows. Furthermore, you are to bow and serve Lysandra as if she were your actual Queen and Luna."

The command hits me like a physical blow to the chest. I am to be a shield, a decoy designed to protect his lover's position while I suffer the chains of his dominance.

To twist the emotional knife even deeper into my bleeding heart, Lysandra smiles smugly. She looks down at me, her eyes dancing with malicious triumph, before she leans in. She passionately kisses his lips right in front of me, pressing her body into his. Torin responds eagerly, his hand sliding up her back. She rubs her ultimate victory right in my face, making sure I understand exactly where I stand in this cruel hierarchy.

I stare at the floor, sickening clarity washing over me. I am nothing but a disposable pawn. A lifeless dummy trapped in a nightmare of a life that isn't even mine anymore. The title of Queen means nothing when I am doomed to serve the woman who stole my mate's heart.

Silent, heavy tears stream continuously down my pale face, dripping off my chin to splash onto the cold marble. The illusion of a second chance is dead and buried. With a hollow chest, I slowly nod my head in submission to his profoundly humiliating demands. My shattered mind spirals, deeply wondering if enduring this twisted, degrading fate is truly any better than the executioner's blade waiting for me outside these walls.

"Or I should just reject you?" His voice thundered, cutting through my agonizing thoughts and snapping me back to reality.
