The Innocent Arrival
"I thought you said the housekeeper replacing Greta was on her way? Where is she?!" Vance’s voice boomed through the receiver, echoing like a crack of thunder across his lavish master bedroom.
Miles away, the agency representative yanked the phone away from her ear, wincing in sheer terror. She knew Vance’s volatile temper all too well. When a man like Vance Thorne got angry, careers vanished overnight. She scrambled for an excuse, her palms sweating against the plastic receiver. How could she tell a man of his stature that the girl in question hadn't even checked into the agency yet? He would have her head on a silver platter.
Vance rubbed his temples, a dark scowl twisting his sharp, handsome features. He possessed zero patience for incompetence. He kept a long, revolving roster of women solely to feed his sexual desires, but beyond that, he held no affection for the female gender. He only fucks them, and that is it. He didn't want to hear pathetic excuses; he wanted his sprawling estate cleaned immediately.
"She is on her way, sir," the woman stammered over the line, her voice trembling as she desperately tried to salvage the situation. "City traffic is terrible this morning. I am pretty sure that is why she hasn't arrived yet."
Vance hissed through his teeth and slammed the phone down, severing the connection. Pointless to keep arguing.
He turned and surveyed the chaotic aftermath of his bedroom, scowling in deep disdain. Clothes were strewn recklessly across the expensive imported rugs. Half-empty glasses cluttered the nightstand, and the tangled, ruined sheets reeked of sex. The place was a disaster. After his little sexcapade with red-haired girl number one last night, he knew the room would be wrecked. This was exactly why he needed a housekeeper urgently.
His last maid, Greta, had left after getting accepted into college. The older staff members couldn't handle the massive workload of the estate alone. Greta had been a hot piece of work, but Vance operated under a strict personal rule: he never sexualized his employees. He preferred his regular whores for that. Business was business.
Snatching his tailored suit jacket from a nearby chair, Vance marched toward the bedroom door. He had a lucrative empire to run. He would head to the office and pray the new maid had resumed her duties before he returned. If she wasn't there, he made a silent vow. He would make a few phone calls, destroy the agency's business, and ensure they never booked another client in Los Angeles again. A bunch of useless idiots.
Miles away from the furious billionaire, a yellow cab rattled down the bustling streets of Los Angeles. Maeva Carlisle sat in the backseat, her face pressed against the smudged window glass. She had just arrived in the city, her eyes still slightly red from crying and consoling her fellow sisters at the convent. Leaving her sanctuary of twenty years carried a heavy, bittersweet weight, but nothing would stop her from chasing her dreams.
The towering skyscrapers stretched upward, their glass facades gleaming under the California sun. Cars blurred past in a frantic, never-ending symphony of horns and engines. The sheer scale of the city left her mesmerized. She wanted to lean forward and ask the driver if the buildings actually reached heaven. It was overwhelming, a stark contrast to the quiet stone walls she had known since childhood. She remained oblivious to the dark, ruthless realities lurking beneath the city's glittering surface.
The cab driver caught her wide-eyed wonder in the rearview mirror. Seeing how strangely she looked at everyday things, he took it upon himself to explain the landmarks. He knew a cloistered life made a person blind to the real world. He only hoped she found what she was looking for, knowing the outside world could be a terrifying place for someone as innocent as her.
When the cab finally pulled to a stop in front of a sleek office building, he helped her with her bags and bid her a safe farewell. Maeva checked the sign above the entrance, adjusted the collar of her modest dress, and pushed through the glass doors of the employment agency.
The lobby buzzed with frantic, chaotic energy. Employees rushed past with clipboards, typing furiously at their desks. Maeva approached the reception counter, flashing a warm, bright smile.
"Hello," she greeted, her voice soft and polite. "I am Maeva Carlisle—"
The receptionist cut her off with an aggressive, hostile glare. "You’re the bitch that’s supposed to resume work today?"
Maeva blinked, unfazed by the sudden venom. The crude insult rolled right off her shoulders, her innocent mind barely registering the malice behind the words. She kept her smile steady and nodded. "Yes, that is me."
"And you’re just arriving now?" The receptionist seethed, her eyes narrowing. "Madam Myra is surely going to have your head for this." She snatched the telephone, punching in a quick extension to call her boss.
Maeva's brow furrowed in genuine confusion. What were they talking about? Why would anyone want her head?
Seconds later, a frantic woman in her early thirties burst out of a back office. Myra’s face was pale, her nerves still fried from the terrifying threat Vance had delivered over the phone. She marched straight toward Maeva, her sharp gaze sweeping over the girl's outdated, conservative clothes. She would have commented on the bizarre outfit if she had the time, but she was already walking on fire.
"Maeva Carlisle?" Myra demanded.
"That is me," Maeva replied, turning to face her.
"I was thinking of replacing you with someone else if you had come a minute later," Myra said, her voice tight with panic. "Let's just say luck is on your side today. The person you are supposed to be working for is already mad. You have to leave right this second before you infuriate him any further."
Myra hastily scribbled an address onto a slip of paper and shoved it into Maeva’s hand. "Twenty percent of what you earn goes to the agency. I have already sorted out the financial details with your new boss. Go."
Maeva stared down at the hurried handwriting on the paper. She looked back up at the panicked agency boss. "How do I get there?"
Myra stopped dead in her tracks, stunned. She stared at the blonde girl in disbelief. "Are you kidding me right now?"
"I am very sorry," Maeva apologized quickly, sensing the sharp shift in the woman's tone. "I have never been to the city before, so I do not know my way around here."
Exasperated by the girl's sheer naivety, Myra let out a heavy sigh. "Just take a cab and give the driver the address. The place you will be working is very popular. Everyone in this city knows where it is located."
"Thank you!" A bright smile found its way back to Maeva’s cheeks. She thanked the flustered woman profusely, grabbed her bags, and hurried out of the office. Everything was finally falling into place. It was only a matter of time now.
Stepping back onto the bustling sidewalk, Maeva stood near the curb, waving her hand at passing yellow cars. The city traffic was relentless. It took her over fifteen minutes of struggling before a cab finally pulled over. She slid into the back, read the address off the slip of paper, and handed it to the driver just as Myra had instructed.
The cab wove through the sprawling metropolis, leaving the dense commercial blocks behind. The scenery gradually shifted. Concrete sidewalks turned into manicured lawns. Modest shops gave way to towering iron fences and lush, sprawling trees. Beverly Hills was a different world.
The vehicle finally rolled to a stop. Maeva paid the driver, gathered her bags, and stepped out onto the pristine pavement.
She froze, her breath catching in her throat.
It wasn't just a house. It was a massive, palatial estate that stretched out like a modern fortress. The architecture was sleek, intimidating, and screamed of untouchable power. At the front of the towering security gates, a massive sign caught the morning sun. The name 'Thorne's' was spelled out in thick, gleaming gold letters.
Maeva stood rooted on the sidewalk, clutching her worn bags against her chest. The immense scale of the wealth before her was beyond anything she had ever imagined. Whoever lived behind those golden gates possessed a level of success she had only dreamed of having. This was it.
Awe washed over her, replacing her nervous tension with wide-eyed anticipation. She closed her eyes for a brief second, feeling the warm California breeze against her fair skin. She mumbled a small, quiet prayer under her breath, asking for strength, before tightening her grip on her luggage and making her way toward the security guards.
