Watching Marcella's Act in Class

Serena's thumb traced the cool glass of her phone screen. The digital glow illuminated her apathetic eyes, casting a faint shadow over her sharp features. She sat in the desolate back row of the lecture hall, shrouded in the quiet isolation she had purposefully chosen. Down below, the cavernous amphitheater hummed with the low, nervous chatter of freshmen waiting for their morning session to begin. That fragile peace shattered the instant the heavy double doors at the front of the room swung inward. The brass hinges groaned loudly, a grand, echoing announcement that drew every eye in the room.

Marcella stepped over the threshold, orchestrating her entrance with the precision of a seasoned stage actress. She was dressed immaculately. A brand-new, limited-edition Louis Vuitton dress draped perfectly across her figure, the luxurious fabric catching the overhead fluorescent lights. Every step she took was calculated, her designer heels clicking against the polished oak floor in a sharp, demanding rhythm that demanded attention. She did not walk in alone. Closely flanking her were two servants dressed in crisp, pressed gray uniforms. Their arms were laden with massive woven gift bags bearing the gold-foil logos of a high-end coastal bakery and an exclusive artisanal café.

The atmosphere in the lecture hall shifted instantly. The idle chatter died, replaced by a wildfire of rapid whispers. Classmates who had previously been minding their own business sat up straight, their eyes tracking the designer dress and the sudden influx of premium goods.

Marcella halted at the front of the room. She offered the crowd a sugary, practiced smile that crinkled the corners of her eyes. She offered a slight, delicate nod to the room.

"Hello, everyone," Marcella announced, her voice pitched to a sweet, melodic frequency. "I am Marcella Voss. I hope we can all get along well since we are classmates now. I apologize in advance if I offend anyone in the future."

She snapped her fingers lightly. The two uniformed servants immediately sprang into action. They marched up the aisles, reaching into the heavy bags and distributing the expensive treats. Steam curled into the air from the premium cups, carrying the rich, intoxicating scent of roasted espresso, vanilla bean, and dark caramel. Next came the decadent, imported cookies, housed in delicate tin boxes that looked like they belonged in a boutique window display.

"Oh my god, Marcella, you are adorable!" a girl in the second row squealed, clutching her coffee cup as if it were a holy relic.

"That is right!" another classmate chimed in, ripping open a tin. "This coffee is so sweet. It is delicious. Are these cookies imported? I have never tasted anything so rich before. Marcella, you must be from a very wealthy family!"

Marcella soaked in the praise, her chest swelling with pride. She brought a delicate hand to her mouth, covering a shy, practiced giggle. "Oh, you guys are going way too far. These are just the ordinary snacks I eat daily at home. I brought them to share with everyone so they would not go to waste. I will bring more next time if you like them!"

"No wonder you are so slim, Marcella," a boy in a varsity jacket called out. "I would finish everything in one sitting if I had these at home."

"By the way, Marcella, that dress is gorgeous," a girl near the aisle swooned. "Is it from the new LV collection? I am so envious. You look like a princess."

Everyone fawned over Marcella in rapid succession, their voices blending into a chorus of sycophantic praise.

Watching this ostentatious display from the shadowed isolation of the back row, Serena’s eyes narrowed. Her thumb stopped moving across her phone screen. In her naive, foolish previous life, she had walked into this exact room late and flustered. She had seen these very same classmates flocking around Marcella, laughing, eating, and treating the girl like reigning royalty. Back then, Serena had felt a pang of deep inadequacy. She had genuinely believed that Marcella possessed some magnetic charisma, an innate popularity that drew people to her naturally. Serena had spent years bending backward, trying to earn a fraction of that respect.

The realization hit her hard now, crashing over her with the weight of bitter hindsight. Marcella was not charismatic. She was not inherently beloved. The display unfolding below was nothing more than a cheap, transactional grandstanding. Marcella was literally buying their favor with imported sugar and roasted beans. She came bearing gifts on the first day, waving her family's wealth in their faces. Of course, the naive freshmen would fawn over her. They were blinded by the free goods. Serena kept her head down, her face a mask of pure indifference to the pathetic sight of her classmates eagerly prostrating themselves before Marcella’s designer clothes.

The illusion of a perfect, seamless entrance shattered abruptly. One of the servants, carrying a tray of coffees up the side stairs, spotted the lone figure sitting in the shadows.

"Hey there," the servant called out loudly, his voice echoing across the lecture hall. "You can come down and get some coffee and snacks!"

The servant's booming voice drew the immediate attention of the entire room. Dozens of heads snapped toward the back row.

Serena did not flinch under the sudden spotlight. She slowly lifted her head. The cool light of her phone screen illuminated the glacial calm in her eyes. She looked down at the servant, and then at the whispering crowd, with unfiltered apathy.

"No thanks," Serena said softly. Her voice lacked any heat, yet it cut through the room with a biting edge.

Down at the front of the hall, Marcella froze. Her sweet smile stiffened into a rigid grimace. Her eyes darted up the tiered rows and locked onto Serena. A jolt of pure shock traveled down Marcella’s spine, followed immediately by boiling fury.

Why is this wench here so early? Marcella screamed in her mind. How could she possibly arrive before me?

Marcella had calculated the morning perfectly. She had ensured the Voss family chauffeur departed the Oakhaven manor without Serena, deliberately leaving her stranded without financial backing or transportation. Marcella had wanted Serena to arrive late, sweating and humiliated on her first day. Seeing Serena sitting there, calm, collected, and early, felt like a physical blow.

However, knowing she was being watched by her new peers, Marcella quickly shoved her boiling disdain down. She masked her anger with a sickeningly sweet, cloying smile. She lifted the hem of her LV dress and rushed up the side stairs, her heels clicking loudly against the wooden steps.

Marcella reached the back row and lunged forward, forcefully hooking her arm through Serena’s elbow in a tight, inescapable grip.

"Sis!" Marcella exclaimed loudly, ensuring her voice carried across the silent, watching room. "How did you arrive earlier than me? If I had known you were awake, we could have come together! Mom and Dad even talked about you today. You haven't returned home since you left, and they are so worried about you!"

Serena felt her stomach churn at the blatant hypocrisy. The physical contact made her skin crawl. Worried? Serena scoffed internally. Marcella had spent the entire past month deliberately alienating her from their adoptive parents. Marcella had spun tales of her tragic life on the streets, subtly suggesting that Serena was an unworthy burden, effectively elevating her own status within the Voss household. The parents were practically willing to give their lives for Marcella now. They did not care about Serena at all.

In her past life, Serena might have been moved by this public declaration of worry. She might have lowered her head and returned to slave away for the Voss family. But she would not be so foolish this time around.

With a swift, forceful motion, Serena ripped her arm away. The movement was so sharp it threw Marcella slightly off balance.

Serena stood up, her expression turning to solid ice.

"Sis?" Serena demanded, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the silent hall. "Why are you calling me that?"

Marcella blinked, feigning shock. "You are my sister. That is why I am calling you that."

Serena let her gaze drag slowly from the top of Marcella’s perfectly styled hair down to her designer shoes. Her eyes held nothing but raw disdain.

"Have you lost your mind?" Serena asked indifferently. "Why are you claiming to be related to me? I am the only daughter in my family, and I have only one older brother. I am sorry to disappoint you, but I do not have any sisters."

She took a step closer, forcing Marcella to look up.

"Furthermore," Serena continued, her tone ruthless. "I am a Sterling, and you are a Voss. Our last names are different. How exactly does that make me your sister?"

The blunt, public rejection stunned the room. Classmates exchanged wide-eyed, shocked glances, their hands freezing around their free coffees. The humiliation burned bright red across Marcella’s cheeks. Forced to maintain her benevolent, victimized facade in front of the whispering, judgmental class, Marcella resorted to her ultimate weapon.

She reached out for Serena's hand once again, her eyes glistening flawlessly with large, unshed tears.

"Sis, please do not be like this," Marcella whimpered, her voice trembling perfectly. "Although I am the true biological daughter and you are just an adopted daughter, I really want to get along. Please do not ignore me. We are sisters!"

Disdainfully shaking off the desperate touch as if she had been burned by acid, Serena reached into her pocket.

"Do not touch me," Serena commanded sharply. The sheer authority in her tone made Marcella flinch. "I am very particular, and I cannot stand to touch dirty things."

Serena pulled out a neatly folded handkerchief. Holding the gaze of the entire room, she shook the pristine fabric out. She methodically and deliberately wiped the skin of her hands and forearm exactly where Marcella had touched her. She rubbed the skin with an insulting slowness, treating Marcella’s touch like a toxic disease.

Once she was done, Serena crumpled the fabric into a ball. She casually tossed the cloth aside. It flew over the railing and landed straight into a nearby trash bin with a soft thud.

Sharp, collective gasps immediately rippled through the room. A girl in the front row stood up, pointing a trembling finger at the discarded cloth.

"Oh my god," the girl gasped, recognizing the distinctive pattern. "Is that a Hermès handkerchief?"

"What? Are you sure?"

"Look at the stitching! It is authentic! That is worth thousands of dollars!"

"She must be even wealthier than Marcella! She just threw it away like common trash!"

"My goodness, do not throw it away! If you do not want it, give it to me!"

Marcella’s eyes reddened instantly at the profound, overwhelming humiliation. The whispering crowd was focusing on Serena’s effortless display of wealth, undermining Marcella's entire grand entrance. Marcella let her tears fall freely down her cheeks in a masterful, practiced display of utter victimhood.

"Sis, did I do something wrong?" Marcella cried out dramatically, her voice cracking. "Please tell me if I did! I will learn from my mistakes. Please do not ignore me, okay?"

Serena looked down at the weeping girl. She knew Marcella was acting, but she had to admit the performance was technically flawless. Marcella must have practiced this exact weeping routine daily in front of the Voss parents over the last month and a half.

Utterly unfazed by the theatrical performance, Serena scoffed softly.

"You are filthy," Serena muttered, her voice dripping with unadulterated contempt.

It was not a long, drawn-out insult, but the sheer dismissal in her tone made it a stinging slap to the face.

Marcella gritted her teeth behind her trembling lips, furious and filled with hatred. How does this wench have such a sharp tongue? Marcella fumed internally. She must be jealous! She was chased out of the Voss family after I returned, and now she is acting high and mighty. She definitely stole that handkerchief from my house. Her biological family is impoverished! How could she ever afford Hermès?

Marcella opened her mouth to formulate a retaliation, ready to escalate the drama further. Before a single word could leave her lips, heavy footsteps echoed from the hallway.

A stern-faced university counselor strode into the lecture hall, his polished shoes thudding against the floorboards. He clapped his hands loudly to establish order, the sharp smacks slicing through the tense atmosphere.

"Alright, settle down everyone!" the counselor instructed, walking to the center of the room. He briefly addressed the whispering crowd, dismissing the morning class. "You freshmen are dismissed for now. Head back to your dorms, unpack your things, and freshen up. We will gather back here in the afternoon for the mandatory freshman orientation."

The students immediately began shuffling their feet, packing their bags, and murmuring among themselves.

The counselor paused at the door, pulling a clipboard from under his arm. He scanned the room and looked directly toward the back row.

"Also," the counselor called out specifically. "Please come with me, Serena Sterling."

Serena locked her phone screen and slipped it into her pocket. She grabbed her bag from the floor, slung it over her shoulder, and nodded. She walked down the aisle, brushing past the weeping Marcella without sparing her a single glance. She followed the counselor out into the corridor.

The very moment the heavy oak door clicked shut behind Serena, the dynamic in the room flipped.

Marcella swallowed her bubbling rage instantly. The venom in her eyes vanished, replaced by sheer devastation. She turned to face the gathered crowd of classmates and let out a loud, pitiful, apologetic sob, covering her face with her hands.

"I am so sorry," Marcella cried, her voice muffled by her fingers. "I am sorry for causing a scene in public on our first day. She is actually my sister."

"Your sister?" a girl asked, stepping closer to comfort her. "But she said you two have different last names. Also, why is she acting so cold to you?"

Marcella cried harder, her shoulders shaking.

Right on cue, her loyal servant stepped forward, taking center stage to explain the tragedy to the captivated room. During the past month, this servant had watched Marcella put on her innocent act at the Voss manor. He, along with the rest of the staff, had become fiercely partial to Marcella, eager to speak ill of Serena behind her back to win the new heiress's favor.

"It is a terrible situation," the servant proclaimed loudly, spinning the narrative with practiced ease. "Serena and Ms. Marcella were switched at birth. Mr. and Mrs. Voss raised Serena in extreme luxury for eighteen years, believing she was their own flesh and blood. But look at how she treats Ms. Marcella now!"

The students leaned in, their eyes wide as they drank in the gossip.

"It is outrageous," the servant continued, shaking his head in disgust. "She is nothing but a bitter, resentful imposter. She deeply hates Ms. Marcella for simply returning home and claiming her rightful place as the true daughter of the Voss family."

The psychological manipulation worked flawlessly on the naive students. They looked at the imported cookies in their hands, tasted the sweet coffee on their tongues, and looked at the weeping, generous girl before them.

Sympathetic murmurs filled the room. The classmates quickly and decisively condemned Serena's cruel, heartless behavior.

"So that is how it is," a boy muttered angrily. "Damn, Serena is way too much. She is clearly an imposter, yet she treats Marcella like garbage."

"I know, right?" a girl chimed in. "We would have thought she was the real deal if we did not know better. What an ungrateful person."

"Wait a minute," another student realized, pointing a finger toward the trash bin where the expensive cloth still lay. "If Serena's real family is poor, how did she throw away a Hermès handkerchief?"

The servant scoffed, fueling the fire. "How do you think?"

The realization hit the crowd like a lightning bolt. Blinded by Marcella's tears and the imported coffee in their hands, they were easily convinced.

"I see," a girl gasped, covering her mouth in shock. "Serena must have maliciously stolen that discarded Hermès handkerchief directly from Marcella's house before fleeing!"

"She is a thief!"

"We need to stay away from her."

Behind her hands, Marcella listened to the damning whispers of her peers. Her tears continued to fall, but beneath the cover of her fingers, her lips curled into a vicious, triumphant smile.
