Watching Marcella's Act in Class

Just minutes before the bell rang, the heavy wooden doors of the lecture hall swung open. Marcella made her grand, melodramatic entrance. Two uniformed servants trailed closely behind her, struggling to carry massive, silver trays. The trays groaned under the weight of expensive gourmet iced coffees and towering piles of rare, imported snacks.

Sitting quiet and unobserved in the shadowed back row, Serena watched the sickening spectacle unfold. Her mind possessed a cold, piercing clarity. In her previous life, she had arrived late, exhausted from getting lost on campus. She had walked in to find the entire class already treating Marcella like royalty. Back then, Serena foolishly believed Marcella possessed some natural, undeniable charm. Now, she realized the bitter truth. Marcella’s immense popularity wasn’t organic. It was bought and paid for with the Voss family's stolen wealth.

The shallow classmates instantly swarmed the heiress, eager to claim their share of the extravagant bribes.

"Hello, everyone," Marcella announced. Her voice dripped with practiced, sugary sweetness as she paused in the center aisle. "I'm Marcella Voss. I hope we can all get along since we're classmates now. I apologize in advance if I offend anyone in the future."

"Marcella, you're adorable! Oh my god," a girl shrieked, eagerly grabbing a frosted iced coffee.

"This coffee is so sweet. It's delicious," a boy added, taking a massive gulp.

"You must be wealthy," another classmate chimed in, tearing into a delicate pastry. "Are these snacks imported? These cookies are so decadent. I've never tasted such delicious cookies before. Marcella, are you from a well-to-do family?"

Marcella beamed, soaking up the compliments like a sponge. She covered her mouth, feigning a shy giggle. "Oh, you guys are going too far. These are just ordinary snacks I eat daily. I brought them to share with everyone. I'll bring more next time if you like them. After all, I can never finish them, and they'll go to waste!"

"No wonder you're so slim, Marcella," a girl in the front row praised. "I would finish everything in one sitting."

"That's right. By the way, Marcella, the customized designer dress you're wearing is gorgeous. Is it from the new collection? I'm so envious."

As the crowd continued to fawn over the heiress in rapid succession, one of the sharp-eyed servants scanned the room to ensure everyone received a bribe. Her gaze landed on the shadowed back row.

"Hey there!" the servant called out in a loud, surprised voice, pointing a finger. "You can come down and get some coffee and snacks too!"

The sudden shout pierced the endless chatter. The entire room turned, drawing every single pair of eyes directly to Serena's isolated corner.

Serena slowly lifted her head from her phone. She met their stares with unblinking indifference. "No thanks," she answered softly.

Marcella stiffened. Shock flashed across her carefully powdered face. She clearly hadn't expected to see the girl she had driven out of the house sitting there so early, looking so composed.

But the heiress quickly masked her sheer panic. A sickeningly sweet smile stretched across her lips. Marcella pushed her way through the crowd and approached the back row with exaggerated, affectionate familiarity.

"Sis!" Marcella cooed loudly, ensuring the whole audience heard her. She reached out and clung tightly to Serena's arm like a devoted sibling. "How did you arrive earlier than me? If I'd known, we could have come together. Mom and Dad even talked about you today. You haven't returned after leaving, and they're so worried about you!"

Serena did not flinch. She was no longer the desperate, foolish girl who would willingly slave away for the Voss family's leftover scraps of affection. She pulled her arm back with a sharp, forceful jerk. Her expression froze over, turning hard as ice.

"Sis?" Serena retorted. Her voice cut through the suddenly quiet room like a blade. She looked Marcella up and down with blatant, unapologetic indifference. "Why are you calling me that?"

Marcella blinked, pretending to be taken aback. "You're my sister. That's why I'm calling you that."

"Have you lost your mind?" Serena asked, her tone steady and loud. "Why are you claiming to be related to me? I'm the only daughter in my family, and I have only one older brother. I'm sorry, but I don't have any sisters. Besides, you're a Voss, and my last name is Sterling. Our last names are different. How exactly does that make me your sister?"

Embarrassed by the public rejection, Marcella bit her lip. She was desperate to maintain her flawless, victimized act in front of the watching class. She reached out again, her eyes wide and demure.

"Sis, please don't be like this to me," Marcella pleaded, her voice trembling just right. "Although I'm the true biological daughter and you're just an adopted daughter who left, I really, truly want to get along with you! Please don't ignore me. We're sisters!"

Serena shook her off again. This time, visible disdain wrinkled her nose. She took a step back, creating a physical barrier between them.

"Don't touch me," Serena said. "I'm very particular about hygiene, and I can't stand to touch dirty things."

Slowly, methodically, Serena reached into her pocket. She drew out a crisp, folded handkerchief. She meticulously wiped the exact spot on her hand where Marcella's fingers had grazed her skin. Once she was finished, she flicked her wrist and casually tossed the fabric into a nearby trash can.

Several sharp-eyed, brand-conscious classmates gasped audibly. They instantly recognized the discarded square of fabric.

"Oh my god, it's a Hermès handkerchief!" a girl whispered loudly.

"She's even wealthier than Marcella!"

"My goodness. Don't throw it away," a boy muttered. "If you don't want it, give it to me. I want it! That piece is worth thousands of dollars."

At the sheer humiliation, Marcella's expression twisted for a fraction of a second before her eyes reddened. Expertly forced, glistening tears pooled in her lashes. She looked like a kicked puppy. "Sis, did I do something wrong? Please tell me if I did. I'll learn from my mistakes. Please don't ignore me, okay?"

Serena couldn't be bothered to entertain the pathetic performance for another second. She stared at the crying girl, her face devoid of any sympathy. She knew Marcella must have practiced this exact weeping act in front of her parents for the past month.

"You're filthy," Serena muttered, loud enough for the front row to hear.

Marcella's hands balled into tight fists at her sides. Genuine fury flashed behind her tear-filled eyes. She opened her mouth, ready to drop the act and aggressively retaliate.

Before she could spit out a single word, the heavy wooden doors swung open once more. Mr. Graves, the strict university counselor, strode into the room carrying a sturdy clipboard. His sharp gaze swept over the gathered crowd, instantly killing the remaining whispers.

"Alright, settle down," Mr. Graves instructed. His authoritative voice echoed off the high ceilings. "The morning session is over. I need all of you to return to your respective dorms. Get yourselves freshened up and prepare. We will gather here in the afternoon for the mandatory freshman orientation."

The students began to shuffle, grabbing their expensive coffees and imported snacks.

Mr. Graves paused, lifting his clipboard. He scanned his printed list, adjusting his glasses. "Also, Serena Sterling," he called out. "Please step outside into the hallway with me."

Serena didn't spare Marcella another glance. She grabbed her bag, slung it over her shoulder, and nodded. She walked down the tiered steps and followed the counselor out of the lecture hall, leaving the tense atmosphere behind.

The very split second Serena disappeared through the heavy wooden doors, Marcella dropped her fawning, sisterly facade. The sweet, pleading expression vanished. But as the classmates turned their attention back to her, she quickly masked her boiling fury. She let out a soft, heartbreaking sniffle, clutching her customized designer dress.

"I'm so sorry, everyone," Marcella said, delivering a brilliantly acted, tearful apology to the class. "I didn't mean to cause such an uncomfortable public scene on our first day. She's actually my sister."

"Your sister?" a girl asked, looking confused. "But you have different last names. Also, why is she so cold to you?"

Marcella skillfully stepped back, burying her face in her hands as if she was on the verge of breaking down. This subtle movement allowed her loyal, loud-mouthed servant to take center stage and aggressively control the narrative.

The servant puffed out her chest, looking indignantly at the eager crowd. "You all shouldn't blame Ms. Marcella! Serena and Ms. Marcella were switched at birth. Mr. and Mrs. Voss raised Serena for eighteen years, treating her incredibly well. But look at how she treats the real daughter now! It's outrageous."

The classmates leaned in, their gossip-hungry ears perking up at the drama.

"Serena is just a bitter, ungrateful imposter," the servant continued loudly, making sure every student heard the accusation. "She deeply resents Ms. Marcella for simply reclaiming her rightful, biological position as the Voss family's true daughter. After everything the Voss family did for her, this is how she repays them!"

Hearing this incredibly skewed version of events, the easily swayed classmates immediately turned their collective anger on the absent Serena. They clutched their free gourmet coffees and imported cookies, their allegiances firmly bought and manipulated.

"So that's how it is," one girl scoffed, sipping her iced coffee. "D*mn, Serena is too much. She's clearly just an imposter, yet she treats poor Marcella so poorly. We would have thought Serena was the real deal if we didn't know better."

A boy leaning against a desk crossed his arms, deducing the situation with loud, pure disdain. "Did you see that handkerchief she threw away earlier? Her family is probably broke. Serena must have stolen that Hermès piece directly from Marcella's house before she got kicked out!"
