Right Up Kaelen's Alley
POV: Third-person limited (Serena).
Declan firmly caught Serena, bracing her slight weight against his broad chest. His large hand cradled the back of her head, his touch gentle and grounding. The usual boardroom stoicism that hardened his features—the ruthless demeanor that made him a feared titan in the corporate world—melted away in an instant. He looked down at the younger sister he had lost for eighteen years, and a warm, affectionate smile broke across his handsome face.
"Sera," he whispered, his deep voice carrying a tremor of genuine emotion. "I've eagerly awaited your return for so many years. Our family is finally reunited now!"
Hearing that comforting acceptance, Serena let her guard down. She rested her cheek against the fine fabric of his suit, breathing in the crisp scent of cedar and expensive cologne. The crushing tension she had carried for two lifetimes drained from her shoulders. Tears pricked the corners of her eyes, but she blinked them away. She comfortably settled into the Sterling family's fiercely loving and protective embrace. For the first time since her rebirth, she knew she would never have to face the cold world alone again.
Over the course of the next month and a half, Kingsport’s elite high society buzzed feverishly. Unconfirmed rumors swirled through country clubs and charity galas about the powerful Sterling family's hidden, long-lost daughter finally returning to the fold after eighteen years. Yet, no one outside the sprawling estate had caught a single glimpse of her. Some rival families even started malicious gossip, suggesting the Sterling daughter was too unpresentable or uneducated, which was why Arthur and Diana kept her hidden from the public eye.
Meanwhile, across the state in Oakhaven, Arthur Sterling made good on his promise. He dispatched his senior assistants to quietly reward the Voss family for raising his daughter. The assistants handed over a lucrative commercial construction project that would guarantee the Vosses a massive fortune. They also delivered mountains of generous, expensive gifts. Oblivious to the terrifying truth of Serena's actual identity, the materialistic Vosses reveled in their sudden influx of newfound wealth. They admired their new luxury goods and gloated over their ballooning bank accounts, utterly forgetting the adopted daughter they had just kicked out into the rain. They assumed the Sterlings merely wanted a good business relationship and never gave Serena a second thought.
Capitalizing on Serena's permanent absence, Marcella greedily took over every aspect of Serena’s old life. She discarded Serena’s remaining belongings and clothes, tossing them into garbage bags without a shred of hesitation. Marcella even sweet-talked her parents into buying her a spot at Cranston University. Yet, as Marcella sat cross-legged on the plush duvet of her newly claimed bedroom, she still harbored a lingering malice. She stared at the empty closet space, her jealousy an unquenchable fire. *Where else can she go if she doesn't come back?* Marcella thought, her nails digging into her palms. *If she doesn't return, I'll take the initiative and look for her! I'll never let her off the hook.*
Back in Kingsport, Serena firmly declined her parents' eager offers to throw a superficial welcome banquet to introduce her to high society. Diana had wanted to clear the ridiculous rumors, but Serena had no desire to parade herself before the elite just yet. Having lived through a previous life, she found those events meaningless. She focused solely on peacefully recovering from her traumatic car accident, savoring the quiet luxury of spending uninterrupted time with her real family.
One breezy afternoon, she lounged comfortably on a padded chaise, sunbathing in the lavish backyard gardens. The vibrant blooms swayed gently in the wind, and the warm sunlight felt healing on her skin. Diana walked out onto the stone patio carrying a silver tray. She brought over a pitcher of iced tea and a bowl of freshly peeled fruit. Diana sat down next to her daughter, picked up a slice of apple with a small silver fork, and handed it over. She casually asked about her university plans.
"Sera, sweetie," Diana began, her eyes full of maternal warmth. "Which university did you end up getting into?"
"Cranston University," Serena answered, accepting the fruit with a bright smile. She took a small bite, enjoying the crisp sweetness. "The department of film and theatrical arts." She had earned that coveted spot entirely on her own academic merit, spending countless hours perfecting her admission portfolio.
Hearing this, Diana’s face lit up with immense pride. She clapped her hands together, her eyes sparkling with delight. "Cranston University is an excellent school!" Diana beamed, leaning forward. "I actually graduated from the drama department there myself. I never guessed we'd share the same alma mater. My daughter must have inherited my artistic talent in her blood. Sera, whatever you need, I'll fully support you. You're going to be a brilliant actress."
"Thank you, Mom," Serena replied sweetly, sipping her iced tea. "I'll work hard."
Inwardly, however, her resolve hardened into steel. Staring up at the vast, cloudless sky, she clearly remembered the agonizing timeline of her past life. She remembered how Marcella had bought her way into Cranston using the Voss family's newly acquired Sterling money. She remembered the cruel bullying Marcella orchestrated against her on campus, isolating her from her peers and spreading vicious rumors. The ultimate betrayal had been when Marcella stole Serena's anticipated first leading theatrical role. Marcella had then manipulated the campus media to irreparably ruin her reputation, painting her as a bitter, jealous fraud.
In this new life, Serena refused to play the tragic, defenseless victim. She would reclaim every single thing that rightfully belonged to her, and she would ensure Marcella paid the ultimate price. She would build her own empire from the ground up, and she would never let that fake sister stomp on her dreams again.
The chaotic, bustling morning of university enrollment day arrived quickly. Serena's parents were unavoidably tied up with urgent business matters at the corporate headquarters and felt terrible they couldn't escort her to campus. To make up for it, they arranged for Zane, a cousin who was currently a junior at Cranston studying computer science, to drive her.
Serena stood radiantly under a large oak tree just outside the estate's sprawling iron gates. She wore a delicate, ruffled white dress that fluttered softly in the morning breeze. The dappled sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting a warm glow over her flawless skin. She held her phone in one hand, completely absorbed in typing a complex red code that scrolled rapidly across the dark screen. Her fingers moved with practiced speed, her mind entirely focused on the digital puzzle before her. The red characters reflected faintly in her dark eyes as she compiled the final sequence.
Suddenly, a heavily tinted black Bentley smoothly pulled up to the curb, the expensive tires crunching quietly against the gravel.
Serena didn't notice the vehicle until the sleek rear window rolled down silently.
Inside the luxurious cabin sat a breathtakingly handsome man. He possessed a cold, indifferent face with a sharp jawline perfectly defined in the morning light. His stern, dark gaze locked onto the girl under the tree, sizing her up with a calculating intensity.
"Serena Sterling?" his deep, resonant voice rang out, carrying a commanding authority that demanded immediate attention.
Startled by the sudden noise, Serena looked up from her screen. She quickly locked her phone, the red code vanishing into black glass, and instantly locked eyes with Kaelen Hawthorne. She had never met her cousin before, having only just returned to the family. Mistaking this towering, intimidating presence in the back seat for her appointed ride, a bright, sweet smile instantly graced her delicate face.
"Hello, Zane," she greeted cheerfully, her voice ringing out like a clear bell as she took a step toward the imposing car.
In the back seat, Kaelen raised his sharp brows in puzzlement.
Only twenty minutes prior, the real Zane had called him in an absolute panic. Zane was helplessly held up by a clinging woman at a downtown hotel and could not make it to the estate in time. He had desperately begged a reluctant Kaelen to fetch his newly found cousin instead. Kaelen had hated the idea. He despised running mundane errands and had zero patience for coddled, wealthy heiresses. He had only agreed to get Zane to stop whining in his ear.
Yet, as Kaelen looked intently at the ethereal girl bathed in the dappled sunlight, something shifted. He absorbed her innocent, pleasant smile, the way the breeze caught the ruffles of her white dress, and the bright, unclouded clarity in her eyes. Kaelen surprisingly found that the bothersome, irritating task had unexpectedly turned into something rewarding.
Zane's cousin, with her bright eyes and delicate features, was undeniably his type. She was right up his alley. He leaned back slightly against the premium leather seat, his dark eyes fixing on her as a spark of genuine intrigue ignited beneath his cold exterior.
