Marcella's Manipulation
Serena yanked her wrist free from Marcella’s desperate grasp. The sudden, forceful movement left Marcella stumbling a half-step forward, her hands grasping at empty air. Without masking her deep-seated distaste, Serena brushed her palm against the soft fabric of her skirt. She wiped away the lingering sensation of the other girl's clammy touch, an unspoken rejection of the fake sisterly bond Marcella tried to project.
She refused to play out the agonizing script of her past life. Back then, a misplaced sense of duty and overwhelming gratitude had kept her chained to this house. She had swallowed their twisted logic, endured the constant sidelining, and allowed herself to be ground down by Marcella's endless psychological warfare. Not this time.
Turning her back on the sputtering Marcella, Serena fixed a cold, unwavering gaze on the couple seated on the plush velvet sofa.
"Mom, Dad," Serena said, her tone carrying a chilling finality that echoed off the high ceilings of the living room. "What I mean is, now that your biological daughter has returned to her rightful place, I should also go look for my biological parents."
Mr. and Mrs. Voss exchanged uneasy, loaded glances. A pang of lingering guilt flashed across Mrs. Voss’s face. She wrung her manicured hands, her gaze darting between the outstanding girl they had raised and the weeping flesh-and-blood daughter who had supposedly suffered in poverty. They understood the logic behind Serena's words. They had just asked her to surrender her bedroom to Marcella and move into a cramped school dormitory. It made perfect sense for Serena to seek out her true roots rather than stay where she was no longer the priority.
"You want to look for your biological parents?" Mr. Voss asked, rubbing the back of his neck, his voice tinged with heartbreak.
"You raised me," Serena continued. She offered a shallow, formal bow, maintaining her emotional distance. "I will never forget the kindness you showed me for eighteen years. But I must find out where I truly belong."
"Sera, do not do that," Mrs. Voss pleaded, standing up halfway. "It is understandable. If you want to find them, we will not stand in your way. You have our blessing."
Marcella stood frozen by the coffee table. Her meticulously crafted schemes were crumbling right before her eyes. If Serena left now—dignified, untainted, and holding the moral high ground—how could Marcella exact her long-awaited revenge? She needed Serena trapped within these walls, isolated, ridiculed, and tormented until she broke.
Desperation clawed at Marcella’s throat. She lunged into the conversation, spinning a fabricated horror story on the spot to salvage her trap.
"Mom, Dad, we cannot let Sera leave!" Marcella cried out, her voice pitching into a shrill wail. "You do not know the truth! I did some asking around before I came home. Sera’s biological parents are in terrible shape. Their family is barely making ends meet! Her father is a compulsive gambler who owes money everywhere, and her mother is a malicious, uneducated woman. Everyone in their neighborhood despises them. Her older brother is a notorious bachelor. He is nearly thirty and still unmarried because no decent family would ever associate with them! Sera deserves better than that. We cannot let her ruin her life in that squalor!"
Serena tilted her head, observing the frantic performance. She had never known the truth about her biological family, but she knew Marcella’s modus operandi. The sheer detail of the lie gave away the game. Who investigates the adoptive family of the girl they are replacing with such terrifying precision? Unwilling to be dragged back into the endless, exhausting battles of her former life, Serena refused to take the bait.
A subtle, mocking smile touched Serena's lips. "It does not matter. They are my biological parents. We are tied by blood. I won't treat them with disdain, whether they are poor or rich." She paused, letting the silence stretch for a fraction of a second before delivering a sharp counterattack. "Did you return because you knew Mom and Dad were wealthy?"
The sharp accusation caught Marcella off guard. The color drained from her cheeks, then flooded back in an anxious, mottled flush. "How—how could that be?!" she stuttered, scrambling backward as if burned. "That is not who I am, sis! Please do not misjudge me! Mom, Dad, tell her I am not like that!"
Instantly, the overprotective Vosses rushed to defend their biological daughter.
"Sera, how could you say such a thing?" Mr. Voss scolded, his guilt evaporating into defensive anger. "Marcella had no idea about our financial situation when we found her."
"Do not worry, Marcella, she is just lashing out," Mrs. Voss soothed, pulling the flustered girl into a protective hug.
Serena watched the display with supreme composure. She knew exactly how Marcella operated. Given enough time, this weeping girl would turn these weak-willed parents against her. Capitalizing on the fact that the Vosses still held a moderately good impression of her, Serena forcefully insisted on departing immediately.
"Since we agree," Serena said, cutting through their comforting whispers. "I will leave today."
Reluctantly, Mr. and Mrs. Voss yielded. They tasked their staff to track down the scribbled address linked to Marcella's supposed investigation. Within the hour, Serena stood by the grand doorway of Oakhaven with a small travel bag. The Vosses' private driver waited by the idling car.
From the shadows of the second-floor landing, Marcella watched Serena’s departing figure. A secret, gloating smirk twisted her lips. She was convinced the spoiled, pampered Serena would snap under the crushing weight of poverty. *Go ahead and leave,* Marcella thought. *You will not last a week in that slum. You will inevitably crawl back on your knees, and then you will be at my utter mercy.*
The local train rattled along the tracks. Serena stared out the window, watching the sprawling suburbs give way to the rugged, industrial outskirts of Kingsport. Two long hours stretched by. The rhythmic clacking of the wheels provided a strange sense of comfort, washing away the lingering tension of the Voss household.
The train smoothly slid into the bustling platform. Serena grabbed her bag and stepped out into the humid air. Kingsport Station was a chaotic swarm of travelers. Vendors shouted over the crackling intercom, and luggage carts rattled across the worn concrete.
She stepped aside to avoid a rushing commuter and pulled her phone from her pocket. The Voss family driver had handed her a crumpled slip of paper with a scribbled name and a ten-digit number. She dialed the unfamiliar digits.
The line rang twice.
"Hello." A man's deep, authoritative voice echoed through the speaker. It was crisp, urgent, and carried a commanding weight that made Serena stand a little straighter.
"Hello? Is this Zed?" Serena asked, keeping her voice steady despite the uncertainty bubbling in her chest. "I am your daughter. Can you come and pick me up now?"
A heavy beat of silence passed over the line.
"Stay where you are," the man replied, his tone shifting into crisp urgency. "I will send a car to pick you up."
*Click.*
Serena pulled the phone away from her ear, staring at the screen in dumbstruck disbelief. He had ended the call. A dead tone buzzed against her palm.
"Wait, I did not even tell you where I am," she muttered to the passing crowd. How on earth was he supposed to send a car? She had not mentioned Kingsport Station. She had not given him a street name or a landmark. The bizarre interaction left her questioning her next move.
The afternoon heat began to press down on her shoulders. Lowering her phone, she navigated away from the crowded platform and headed toward a brightly lit convenience store near the station exit. The automatic sliding doors parted, offering a welcome blast of air conditioning. She walked straight to the refrigerators and bought a cold bottle of water, feeling the condensation drip against her fingers.
Stepping back out into the sweltering heat, Serena twisted the plastic cap off the bottle. Her mind replayed Marcella’s vicious claims. *A compulsive gambler. A malicious woman. Barely making ends meet.* She braced herself for reality. She expected a rusty pickup truck with a sputtering engine or a beat-up sedan held together by duct tape to eventually rattle down the street.
She never in her wildest dreams expected the sight unfolding on the avenue ahead.
Two immaculate, gleaming Rolls-Royces glided toward the curb, aggressive and silent like prowling beasts. The luxury vehicles pulled up in a synchronized maneuver, effectively blockading the main station entrance. Pedestrians froze in their tracks. Taxis honked, then swerved out of the way, yielding to the sheer intimidation radiating from the cars.
The heavy doors of the Rolls-Royces swung open.
Imposing bodyguards in sharp black suits stepped out in unison. Their shoes hit the pavement with a synchronized thud. They adjusted their cuffs, their eyes scanning the chaotic station area with military precision from behind dark sunglasses. The crowd instinctively parted around them, giving the massive men a wide berth.
Serena lifted the plastic bottle to take a refreshing sip of water, watching the spectacle with mild curiosity. She figured some local tycoon or a visiting celebrity was arriving on the next train.
Then, a towering bodyguard broke away from the defensive formation. He marched directly toward the convenience store. He kept glancing down, comparing something on a high-tech tablet in his hand to the people lingering near the exit. A blinking tracking dot illuminated the screen, guiding his path.
He adjusted his trajectory, locking his sight onto Serena.
Serena paused, the cold water pooling in her mouth. The man's heavy footsteps closed the distance between them. He stopped just inches from her, his broad shoulders blocking out the afternoon sun.
He dramatically pulled off his dark sunglasses. Instead of a cold, intimidating glare, a deeply wrinkled face revealed itself. The man's stern expression suddenly lit up with overwhelming, unrestrained excitement. He looked at her as if he had just found a legendary treasure.
"Ms. Serena!" the bodyguard boomed, his voice vibrating with joy. "I am here to pick you up!!"
Aghast at the sheer absurdity of the situation, Serena lost control of her reflexes.
A massive spray of water burst out of her mouth.
She coughed, wiping her chin, her eyes wide as saucers as she stared at the gleaming luxury cars and the beaming bodyguard.
"What did you call me?"
