A King's Mercy
Valerica's POV
Odelia snapped her mouth shut, her teeth clicking together in the tense quiet. She shrank back into the shadows of the arched stone, her gaze dropping to the cobblestones. She did not argue further. Even without projecting my Alpha aura, she could clearly sense the immovable resolve radiating from my bones. I wasn't angry with her. She was an Omega, raised in the gentle, sheltered embrace of our old pack, far away from the brutal politics of our kind. She didn't understand the ancient pride that fueled me. But as a wolf born of pure Alpha blood, I had to stand my ground. I would endure any humiliation, any physical toll, to secure my path forward.
Time stretched into a grueling, relentless eternity. We waited under the scorching autumn sun outside the colossal palace gates. The heat baked the stone beneath our boots, sending waves of distortion into the air. Sweat trickled down my spine, pasting my shirt to my skin. My muscles screamed from locking my joints for hours, but I refused to break my rigid posture.
Finally, the heavy iron hinges groaned. The towering doors cracked open, casting long, dark shadows over the courtyard. Beta Lucius emerged from the gloom of the archway. His crimson cape billowed slightly in the stagnant air. He stopped a few feet away and offered a stiff, formal nod.
"Valerica," Lucius announced, his voice carrying over the empty courtyard. "Lycan Theron will see you now."
A wave of profound relief washed over my tired muscles. The suffocating wait was over. I nodded gratefully to the Beta, ignoring the sharp ache in my stiff legs, and followed him inside.
I stepped over the threshold, moving into the cavernous depths of the palace. The scorching heat of the sun vanished in an instant, replaced by a glacial chill that seeped straight into the marrow of my bones. Every single step felt heavier than the last. I was walking into the absolute epicenter of sovereign power. The terrifying weight of the King's dragon's breath pheromones hung thick in the air, crushing the oxygen from my lungs. My inner wolf whined, clawing at my consciousness. She strained painfully against the oppressive, dominant pressure rolling off the throne room ahead.
I kept my eyes fixed on the intricate gold patterns stitched into the hem of Lucius's crimson cape. If I looked away, I feared I might lose my nerve. The familiar scent of cedar laced the air. It was a scent that used to cling to my father's armor after a long hunt, but here, mixed with Theron's power, it only froze the sweat on the nape of my neck.
We entered the massive throne chamber. I immediately dropped to my knees before the elevated obsidian throne. The hard marble floor bit into my skin through my pants. I bowed my head low, letting my gaze fall on the shattered moonstone patterns beneath me. A bronze candelabra sparked in the dim lighting. High above, Theron shifted his weight. His heavy snow-leopard boots ground against the stone floor, the sound echoing through the vast space like thunder.
"Speak on your feet," his voice boomed. The deep baritone echoed like two massive glaciers colliding in the dark, sending a shiver of dust cascading from the vaulted rafters.
I swallowed hard. I pressed my trembling hands against my fiercely throbbing neck, trying to soothe the erratic pulse pounding in my veins. Forcing my protesting legs to cooperate, I stood and executed a perfect, deeply respectful bow.
"Lycan Theron," I started, keeping my voice steady despite the fear clutching my chest. "I am deeply sorry to intrude upon your time, but I am here to beg your mercy."
The golden-trimmed throne creaked. A sudden, brutal surge of white musk and pure, unfiltered sovereign power blasted through the chamber. The sheer force of his Alpha aura slammed into my chest like a physical blow.
My knees hit the hard marble floor again with a loud crack. A sharp gasp tore from my throat. My shoulder blades groaned under the invisible, suffocating weight pressing me down. Through my blurred vision, I saw my hands curling into tight fists. The sharp sting of my fingernails biting deep into my bleeding palms kept me tethered to reality.
"Valerica," Theron's unyielding, kingly voice rang out. It held the same merciless edge I remembered from the battlefield years ago. "I have already formally declared my orders regarding Garrick and Morrigan to all the Alphas. The decree is sealed. I cannot and will not take it back."
My lungs burned. The heavy aura threatened to crush my ribs into dust. But I refused to stay down. Fighting desperately against the pressure, I gathered every ounce of strength left in my body. I slowly, painfully lifted my chin. I forced myself to meet his legendary, glowing sapphire gaze. The dark-gold slit pupils narrowed, swirling with that raw, terrifying energy that had once decimated entire enemy packs.
"I'm not asking you to rescind your decree for them," I pushed the defiant words past my lips. My split canine caught on my lower lip, tearing the skin. The metallic taste of copper flooded my mouth. "I am asking for a new one. I beg your permission to formally reject my mating bond with Alpha Garrick."
The suffocating pressure in the room faltered. Theron's intimidating tone shifted in a heartbeat, cracking slightly with genuine surprise.
"Rejection?" He leaned forward, stepping out of the shadows. "You want to reject Garrick?"
I clamped my jaw, holding back the hot tears of frustration that threatened to spill down my cheeks. I needed to lay out my logic clearly. I needed him to understand the gravity of this trade.
"Alpha Garrick and Morrigan selfishly used their recent battle merits to request their bonding decree," I explained, my voice echoing through the silent hall. "Today marks the exact anniversary of my father and brothers' tragic deaths. I intend to use their accumulated, blood-soaked merits. I am cashing in my family's ultimate sacrifice to ask for legal permission to walk away. I want to purchase my own freedom."
Theron fell silent. The air in the throne room grew heavy with a complex, profound sadness. For a fleeting second, the terrifying Lycan King faded. I saw the young warrior who used to enthusiastically spar with my father in the training rings, long before the heavy crown was placed on his head.
"Do you have any idea what you'll face after this rejection is finalized?" Theron asked. His voice dropped the royal cadence, sounding exhausted. "Glacierclaw is gone, Valerica. Its lands are desolate. Will you really return to those haunted ruins? What's next for you out there in the wilds?"
I smoothed my expression into a mask of calm serenity. My erratic heartbeat finally settled into a steady rhythm.
"I visited the abandoned lands this morning," I told him honestly. "The territory is empty, but the ancient magical wards still hold strong. I will take in any rogue wolf who wants to join a true pack. I will care for the lone pups left behind by the endless wars. Even if Glacierclaw remains small and fractured for a decade, I will keep its name and spirit alive."
The towering young king rose slowly from his obsidian throne. His crimson cape swept against the stone steps. He stepped down, moving into the flickering gloom of the torchlight. The metallic rust of his iron-clad armor mixed with the sharp scent of his white musk. He paused by his massive oak desk, his heavy fingers tapping a slow, rhythmic beat against the wood.
"Have you really thought this through?" Theron asked softly. He stared down at me, his eyes searching mine for any hesitation. "The little wolf who used to eagerly tug at my sleeve, begging for frosting-topped pastries... look at you now. Are you truly willing to use Glacierclaw's final, sacred merits just for your own freedom?"
"I have," I answered. My voice rang clear and true, bouncing off the cold stone walls. "I will not choke my life away chained to a broken bond. Nor will I wither away playing the tragic victim for an empty Luna title in a pack that openly despises me. My family did not bleed into the dirt for me to live on my knees."
"You agreed to the mating arrangement in the first place," he gently reminded me.
I smiled faintly at the memory. "I only admired Garrick as a capable warrior. I agreed because I hoped to secure peace and stability for my mother. But if he can so easily walk away from his sacred oath, so can I."
Theron stared at me in silence. The shadows danced across his scarred face. Then, his eyes blazed with a brilliant, intense sapphire light. The oppressive aura faded away, replaced by a warm, protective energy.
"I grant it," Theron declared, his tone leaving no room for debate. "A new sovereign decree will be drafted and delivered. It will legally free you both from the bond."
He stepped closer, his booming voice softening significantly.
"Valerica," he said, holding my gaze with absolute sincerity. "If anyone out there dares to cross you after this, my door is always open to you."
"Thank you, Your Majesty," I said, feeling lighter already.
