The Obsidian Wager

Seeing Gareth momentarily stunned by Valerie's icy demeanor, Monica quickly stepped up beside him. She gently tugged his pristine sleeve, leaning in close to urgently whisper. "Gareth, you really should go talk to her. She was upset yesterday. She even threatened to break off your engagement!"

Gareth snapped out of his daze. His handsome face twisted with disdain at the mention of the engagement. He scoffed loudly, the sound carrying across the front row of desks. "Good riddance!"

He crossed his arms and mentally rolled his eyes. He assumed this was another one of Valerie's pathetic, manipulative ploys. She always played games to get his attention. Yet, as he glared at her side profile, Valerie remained unfazed. Her eyes stayed calmly glued to the pages of her open book. She slowly turned a page, acting as if his presence in the room was of no consequence.

The tense quiet of the classroom broke a moment later when the final bell rang. The scraping of chairs filled the air, but the noise quickly died down when Tate Adler pushed himself away from his desk. His nose still sluggishly bled from their earlier scuffle, staining his collar. Eager to reclaim his lost pride in front of his peers, he glared across the room.

He threw a furious parting shot at Valerie, challenging her for everyone to hear. "If you have the guts, meet me at the underground Obsidian Arena after school! I will make sure you learn what it means to be put in your place."

The Obsidian Arena was the largest underground competition and betting venue in Oakhaven City. It was a place where wagers were absolute.

Aware that an arrogant fool like Tate needed to be taught a permanent lesson, Valerie didn't even bother looking up from her text. "Sure," she replied with casual, dismissive confidence.

Her immediate acceptance of the challenge sent a palpable thrill of anticipation through the class. Whispers erupted like wildfire.

Amid the rising chatter, Monica turned back to Gareth. She feigned deep concern, her eyes wide. "Gareth, are you going to watch the spectacle? You could step in if she gets bullied too badly."

"I am not going," Gareth refused dismissively. He grabbed his bag and walked away. The mere sound of Valerie's name triggered a reflexive aversion in him.

When the school day ended, the promise of drama proved too much to resist. Nearly everyone in the cohort flocked away from the campus, heading straight for the shadowy depths of the underground Obsidian Arena. They buzzed with excitement, eager to witness Valerie's impending humiliation.

The descent into the arena revealed a cavernous space filled with the smell of sweat and ozone. Down by the illuminated archery range, the stark fluorescent lights cast harsh shadows against the concrete walls. Tate stood waiting near the weapon racks. A sly, arrogant grin stretched across his bruised face. He firmly believed the demanding physical strength and precision of archery would guarantee her downfall.

As Valerie descended the metal stairs and approached the range, Tate mocked her initial silence. "What is the matter? Getting cold feet already? Remember, backing out is not an option once you step foot in the Obsidian Arena."

Valerie calmly eyed the heavy composite bows and the distant target rings. She offered him a knowing smile. "Are you sure this is what you want?"

Tate leaned in close. His voice dripped with malice as he publicly announced the brutal stakes of their wager to the gathered students. "Here is the deal. The loser must perform a humiliating strip dance right here, in the middle of the arena, for everyone to see. Think you can handle that?"

A collective gasp rippled through the surrounding crowd. Students exchanged shocked glances.

"Wow, that is extreme!" a classmate whispered.

"She is in big trouble this time. This punishment is brutal."

Valerie’s smile widened in response to the threat. Tate had no idea she had been rigorously practicing archery since she was eight years old. He thought he was trapping her, but he was enthusiastically digging his own grave.

Unshaken by the collective gasps of the surrounding crowd or the skewed betting pool that heavily favored Tate, she casually stepped up to the shooting line. Only one person in the crowd had placed a small bet on her, and that was clearly out of pity rather than confidence.

Smirking, Tate tried to appear generous for his audience. "I will give you a head start. Take two extra shots. Consider it a favor."

Valerie brushed off his mocking offer without a second thought. "Let's just get this over with," she stated flatly. "I do not have time to waste on this."

Enraged by her nonchalance, Tate snatched his bow from the rack. His face turned a deep shade of red. "You ungrateful brat! Do not come crying to me when this gets ugly!"

Tate aggressively loaded his first arrow, pulled back the string, and fired. The arrow sliced through the air and hit the target with a solid thud. He scored six points. A decent start.

His friends instantly erupted into cheers. "Go, Tate! It is all on you if we are going to see a dance today!"

His second shot hit the eight-point ring, boosting his ego even further. Tate's face flushed with excitement. He shouted over his shoulder, "Valerie, you are going to lose for sure!"

He fired the rest of his quiver. The arrows landed in quick succession. He scored four, six, two, and finally, a perfect ten. He finished his ten consecutive shots with a respectable total of forty-eight points.

Flaunting his high score, he puffed out his chest and loudly boasted to the crowd. He turned to Valerie, sneering. "So, if you beg me to let you off right now, I might just consider it."

Valerie sneered inwardly at his mediocre performance. Forty-eight points was child's play. She gracefully stepped forward to take her turn. Clad in a flowing, elegant red dress, she looked out of place in the gritty underground betting ring. Yet, as she smoothly took the heavy wooden bow in her hands, she commanded the space effortlessly.

She planted her feet firmly on the shooting line. Raising her chin slightly, she drew the thick bowstring back. The wood creaked under the immense pressure. Her movements possessed a slow, mesmerizing precision. The undeniable grace and the unexpected arm strength she displayed instantly stunned the onlookers. Drawing a professional-grade bow required significant upper body power, the exact weakness Tate hoped to exploit. Yet Valerie held the heavy tension steady, her exquisite face calm and sharply focused on the distant bullseye. The previously mocking crowd fell silent, utterly captivated by her breathtaking form.

A few jealous whispers still snaked through the back of the audience.

"She is just putting on a show," someone muttered bitterly.

"All looks, no substance. I bet she cannot even shoot that arrow!"

As the crowd's chatter swelled around the archery range, more arena patrons gathered to see what the commotion was about.

High above the arena floor, in an exclusive VIP room enclosed by tinted glass, the chaotic noise of the lower levels was merely a muffled hum. The luxurious room offered a perfect, unobstructed view of the betting floors below.

Lennox Croft stood near the glass wall, holding a digital tablet. He was in the middle of delivering a serious business report, but he abruptly stopped speaking. He pointed eagerly at the spectacle unfolding below.

"Cassian, look!" Lennox urged excitedly, tapping on the glass. "Look at the stunning girl shooting arrows down there!"

Cassian Vane sat reclined in a plush leather chair in the center of the room. Normally, he remained disinterested in such public displays. Underground wagers and schoolyard rivalries bored him to death. But the sheer excitement in Lennox's voice was unusual enough to draw his attention.

Cassian set his drink down and casually leaned forward. He glanced down through the glass out of curiosity.

His eyes locked onto the girl in the flowing red dress holding the drawn bow. His gaze instantly froze.

He recognized her immediately. The delicate features, the cold focus, the unyielding posture holding the heavy string tight.

*Isn't that the audacious girl who had her sights set on me?* Cassian thought, his interest suddenly piqued.
