Blood and Embers

I ran until I was breathless, colliding with retreating shifters as I followed the shrill cries. Through the roaring flames, inside a house that had been set alight, I saw them.

A woman and a child, fighting off a monster. I wasn’t sure if the sound had come from them at all or if it had existed only in my head, but it led me to these people and these people needed my help, so it didn’t m
