The Dinner Trap
The taxi tires crunched against the paved driveway of the Vance estate, pulling to a halt under the sprawling portico. Clara stepped out into the crisp evening air, her head still throbbing from the remnants of a draining fever. The cool breeze offered little relief. Having spent the last three years isolated in a bleak, gray prison cell, the sheer opulence of the sprawling mansion made her chest feel uncomfortably heavy. The towering pillars and pristine landscaping felt like a different world, one she no longer belonged to.
Right near the grand entrance, a gleaming, custom-made Rolls-Royce Cullinan sat perfectly angled in the driveway. The sleek black paint caught the ambient outdoor lighting, serving as a loud, undeniable declaration. The anticipated return of Kaelen Vance was no longer a rumor. He was really back.
Clara took a deep breath, pushing through the heavy mahogany front doors and stepping into the foyer. The moment her boots hit the polished marble floor, a familiar voice cut through the air.
"Mom, dinner is starting soon. Why are you so late?"
Leo stood near the hallway archway. He did not offer a hug to welcome her home. Instead, her son crossed his arms, greeting her with a blatant, eye-rolling impatience that made it clear she was an unwanted burden invading his space.
Clara opened her mouth to speak, but her attention was snagged by two shadows slipping past Leo in the adjacent corridor. A man and a woman walked shoulder to shoulder. Declan and Chloe Monroe.
Clara’s jaw tightened. Declan possessed the sheer audacity to bring his mistress to a private family dinner, parading her around the estate as if the past three years had erased Clara's existence.
Noticing Clara standing frozen in the foyer, Chloe sprang into action. She smoothed down her expensive designer dress and pasted on a frazzled, devoted smile, expertly playing the role of the exhausted hostess. "Great timing, Clara! The kitchen is slammed tonight. Mind helping out?"
Clara stood her ground, her expression blank. She had zero intention of playing the obedient servant to Chloe, especially not here.
But Leo stepped forward, his face twisting in annoyance. He shoved Clara’s shoulder, nudging her toward the bustling kitchen. "Mom, go help Chloe. She has been working so hard today to make everything perfect. Don't let her wear herself out."
His blatant disrespect stung, a sharp reminder of the wedge Chloe had driven between them. Letting herself be pushed along to avoid a screaming match in the foyer, Clara unwittingly walked right into a carefully laid trap.
The kitchen was a chaotic blur of moving staff and sizzling pans. Chloe stood near the marble prep counter, dramatically dabbing nonexistent sweat from her forehead. She picked up a small crystal bowl filled with a dark dipping sauce and shoved it directly into Clara’s hands.
"Mrs. Vance, this is Leo’s favorite sauce," Chloe said, her tone dripping with a sickly sweet sincerity. "I am swamped right now trying to coordinate the main courses. Can you just drop it by his designated seat at the dining table?"
Before Clara could refuse, Chloe spun around and barked a hurried order at a passing chef, ensuring the interaction was witnessed by the kitchen staff. Clara looked down at the heavy crystal bowl. Sighing quietly, she turned and headed out of the kitchen.
Stepping back into the main hallway with the bowl in hand, Clara froze in her tracks.
Descending the grand sweeping staircase alongside the formidable family patriarch, Victor, was Kaelen Vance.
He wore a sharply tailored black suit that hugged his broad, powerful shoulders. A dark onyx ring rested on his right index finger, drawing attention to his relaxed, confident grip on the polished handrail. He was breathtakingly cool, polished to perfection, and exuded an aura that felt terrifyingly unreachable. He commanded the space without saying a single word.
Kaelen paused on the final step. His dark, piercing eyes flicked over to Clara, offering her a quick, chillingly cold glance. A second later, he effortlessly looked away, his expression bored and indifferent, dismissing her presence as if she were a dusty vase or a forgotten piece of furniture.
Clara forced her fingers to loosen their death grip on the crystal bowl. She pushed aside the immediate shock of seeing the man who now firmly stood at the very top of the corporate world.
"Clara, you made it," Victor called out, his authoritative voice warming with genuine affection as he spotted her standing there.
"Good to see you, Victor," Clara replied, mustering a polite smile and stepping forward.
Victor closed the distance between them, gently patting her shoulder. He spent a few minutes catching up with her, asking about her health and ignoring the tense energy rippling through the estate, before he gestured for everyone to move into the expansive dining room.
The long mahogany table was set with pristine porcelain plates, gleaming silverware, and tall crystal glasses. Victor took his rightful seat at the head of the table, with Kaelen commanding the chair to his immediate right. Clara found herself seated next to Declan, while Leo wedged himself between his father and his favorite "Aunt Chloe," leaving a physical barrier between Clara and her son.
Course after lavish course arrived from the kitchen. The ambient chatter flowed, creating a jovial, warm atmosphere that masked the underlying family tensions.
Halfway through the decadent meal, that delicate peace was shattered.
Leo let out a harsh, suffocating gasp. His hands flew to his throat as he dropped his expensive porcelain plate. It hit the hardwood floor with a loud, deafening clatter.
"Dad! I feel terrible... my skin is itching like crazy!" Leo wheezed, his small body trembling uncontrollably. He desperately grabbed Kaelen’s sleeve, his face contorting in pure agony before he leaned over and vomited onto the pristine Persian rug.
Clara’s heart dropped into her stomach. She shoved her chair back, rushing around the long table. She dropped to her knees beside her son, instinctively yanking up his designer shirt. His pale stomach and forearms were covered in serious, angry red patches. The skin was raised, inflamed, and spreading fast.
It was a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction to cayenne pepper.
Victor stood up abruptly, his face pale with alarm. "What is happening to the boy?"
Declan jumped up from his seat, his eyes darting across the table before locking onto the small crystal bowl sitting next to Leo’s glass. He aggressively snatched the dish of dipping sauce, bringing it to his nose. He sniffed once, and his brow knit tight with unbridled fury.
"Who made this?" Declan demanded, his voice roaring through the dining room and bouncing off the high ceilings.
"She did," Clara stated immediately, pointing a firm, unwavering finger directly at Chloe, who stood frozen near the edge of the table.
Chloe’s eyes widened in dramatic horror. She instantly began shaking her head frantically, stepping back as massive, theatrical tears welled up and spilled over her long eyelashes.
"No! I didn't add any cayenne pepper!" Chloe cried out, her voice cracking with calculated panic. "And after I meticulously made it, I explicitly gave it to Clara to bring out to the table..."
Before Clara could open her mouth to defend herself against the blatant lie, Chloe sniffled, pressing a delicate hand over her heart to deliver a soft, perfectly aimed, pointed blow to Clara's character.
"I get that you are still deeply upset about the three years you spent in prison, Clara," Chloe said, her voice dripping with sorrowful pity. "And maybe you have got a massive grudge against me. But to go this far? Using your own innocent son to get back at Declan? That is just cold."
The psychological trap snapped shut with a deafening finality.
Clara looked around the sprawling table. The energy in the room had already turned against her. The recently released ex-convict stood no chance against the tearful, manipulative actress in the eyes of the Vance family. Chloe had orchestrated this entire scenario, playing the victim with flawless execution.
"Is Chloe telling the truth?" Declan demanded savagely. He lunged forward, aggressively grabbing Clara's thin arm and squeezing hard, his fingers digging painfully into her skin. "Did you poison his food?"
"I didn't do it," Clara stated firmly, refusing to break eye contact with her furious ex-husband or flinch under his tightening grip.
"Clara, three years behind bars and you are still this cruel?" Diane, Declan’s mother, snapped from across the table, viciously berating her supposed cruelty. "Even a wild animal protects its young! To frame Chloe, you would hurt your own flesh and blood? What is wrong with you?"
Leo slumped against Kaelen's chair, his breathing ragged and shallow. He looked up at Clara through wet eyelashes, his weak, tearful voice cutting the deepest. "Mom, Chloe has always been so good to me. She never hurt me. I am so incredibly disappointed in you."
Clara’s chest tightened, the betrayal burning like acid in her throat. She had walked right into Chloe’s snare, and her own son was eager to help pull the noose tight.
Declan’s face twisted in rage. He yanked Clara’s arm, preparing to escalate his fury and drag her away from the table.
"Declan, nothing has been proven yet!" an authoritative voice boomed, instantly commanding the chaos in the room.
Victor intervened sternly, stepping around the table with an imposing presence. "Don't just wildly accuse Clara. Let go of her arm. I simply do not believe she would do this to her own flesh and blood."
The heavy tension paused, hovering in the air like a storm cloud. Clara slowly pulled her arm free, massaging her throbbing skin as she glanced across the chaotic table. Her eyes unexpectedly met Kaelen’s dark, fathomless gaze.
He hadn't moved to help Leo. He hadn't spoken up to condemn her. He simply leaned back comfortably in his plush leather chair, slowly tapping his index finger against the mahogany wood. He watched the unfolding family drama with a cool, enigmatic smirk playing on his lips, remaining detached from the frantic chaos surrounding him. He studied her predicament with a deep, analytical amusement, establishing his commanding presence without lifting a single finger.
Sensing the shift in power and Victor's staunch defense of Clara's innocence, massive tears immediately spilled over Chloe's eyelashes. She looked desperately at Victor, her shoulders trembling as her voice broke.
"Mr. Vance, are you saying... that I did this?"
