The Wrong Mother

"What are you doing here?" Declan's sharp, authoritative voice cut through the sterile hospital air the second Clara stepped out of the examination room.

She looked up. He stood in the middle of the busy hallway with Leo and Chloe flanking him. The three of them stood shoulder to shoulder, relaxed and cohesive, looking every bit like a tight-knit, perfect family unit in for a routine checkup. The sight of them used to twist a knife in Clara's chest, but today, she felt nothing but a hollow chill.

Chloe instantly stepped forward. A smug expression twisted her delicate features as she sized up Clara's sickly, pale complexion. "Mrs. Vance, you don't need to sulk," Chloe announced, her tone falsely sweet but loud enough to bounce off the tiled walls. "If you want to talk to Declan, you don't have to purposely stalk our every move. You just got out of prison. People will start whispering if you follow us around..."

Leo shifted his weight from side to side. He stared at Clara, his small face scrunched up in childish annoyance. "Mom, you're so fake," he muttered under his breath, though the quiet hallway carried his grievances clearly. "You can't handle being without me and Dad. You've got to make a big scene instead of just coming home like normal."

Declan smirked confidently. He looked her up and down, heavy mockery bleeding into his words. "Thought you had some guts, refusing to come back to the Vance estate. Couldn't even make it two full days away from the financial and social security of my name before pulling this pathetic act. Typical Clara. Always needing the spotlight."

Before they could launch another coordinated verbal assault, the heavy clinic door swung open wider. The attending doctor marched out, holding a crisp white bag of medication. He shoved past Declan's imposing frame, ignoring the CEO's glare.

"Why are you deliberately blocking the way?" the doctor scolded, his face hardening with intense irritation as he glared at the trio. He handed the bag directly to Clara. "Let my fragile patient get her meds and go."

Clara took the bag. Her expression remained an unreadable mask. She turned her steady gaze to the three of them.

"You guys speak English?" Clara asked. Her eyes emanated an ice-cold aura that sent a brief, uncharacteristic chill down Declan's spine. "I'm here for my prescription. You three might want to get your heads checked."

She turned on her heel, desperate to leave the suffocating environment.

Leo suddenly lunged forward. His small fingers clamped tightly onto the thin fabric of her sleeve. "My graduation is in a couple days," he muttered. His eyes darted nervously toward Chloe to gauge her reaction before looking back at Clara. "Even if you're mad, you should be there. You're still my... mom."

Clara did not grant him a downward glance. With deliberate, agonizingly slow precision, she peeled his small hand off her sleeve. Her voice lacked any trace of maternal warmth.

"You've got the wrong mom. That's not me."

She resumed walking. Chloe, eager to assert her dominance and play the victim, quickly stepped into her path to stop her.

"I know you are embarrassed about rotting in prison, Clara, and that's why you refuse to come back," Chloe announced, pitching her voice high to loudly and publicly shame her. "But you cannot just dodge your motherly duties simply because of your past mistakes. You ignored Leo for three long years. Are you going to keep blowing him off now just because you feel ashamed?"

Her theatrical performance successfully drew curious murmurs from the hospital onlookers. Heads turned in their direction. Whispers of "prison" and "deadbeat mother" rippled through the crowded corridor.

Before Chloe could finish soaking in her public victory, heavy footsteps approached. A uniformed police officer stopped directly in front of the group, his expression stern and unyielding.

"Miss Monroe?" the officer asked.

Chloe blinked, her smug smile faltering instantly. "Yes?"

"Someone reported two crystal lion statues stolen from their home. Those specific items showed up in a recent television segment filmed at your residence. Please come with us to the station."

Chloe turned a blotchy, horrified red with shock. Panic widened her eyes. The surrounding crowd gasped, the whispers instantly shifting focus. Declan's brow creased in sudden confusion.

Clara coughed heavily into her hand, a harsh, rattling sound tearing from her aching chest. Her pale face remained stone-hard and unbothered by the dramatic shift in the atmosphere.

She looked squarely at Leo. "He is nine. He possesses the freedom to choose whoever he wants as a maternal figure." Her voice rang clear over the lingering whispers. "Consequently, I possess the undeniable right to explicitly state I am not her."

She shifted her chilling gaze back to a hyperventilating Chloe.

"Those lion statues are mine," Clara stated. "My so-called husband had zero legal right to touch them, let alone give them away to his mistress. If you cannot hand them back in pristine condition, you will find out exactly what the inside of a prison cell is like soon enough."

Panic flashed in Declan's amber eyes. He lunged forward and grabbed Clara's incredibly thin wrist.

His grip was punishing. For a split second, he registered the scorching heat radiating from her skin. She was burning up with a severe fever. But the realization did not spark a shred of concern or sympathy. Fierce anger swallowed his rationality whole.

"Have you lost your damn mind?" Declan snarled, pulling her closer. "You are actually calling the cops on Chloe over what happened three years in prison? I gave her those statues!"

Leo immediately chimed in, glaring intensely at Clara. "Great-Grandpa and Chloe told me to give you a chance!" he yelled, furious at her for aggressively turning on his favorite person. "That is the only reason I would want you as my mom! And now you are doing this to Chloe?"

Clara listened to their ridiculously skewed accusations. Her bruised heart went numb. To them, her three years of literal hell meant nothing compared to Chloe's inconvenience.

Fighting through the overwhelming, dizzying haze of her illness, Clara forcefully yanked her hand free from Declan's iron grip. She met his furious gaze with a sharp, terrifyingly calm smile.

"You've got a real knack for being disgusting," Clara said, her words slicing cleanly through the tension. "If it is so trivial, Mr. Vance, why don't you try a stint in prison yourself?"

Leaving Declan frozen and speechless in the corridor, Clara walked out the double doors. As she moved, she visibly wiped her hand on her clothes exactly where he had touched her, scrubbing the fabric as if wiping away pure filth.

Every single passing second tangled with him was torment. She desperately needed the divorce finalized, and fast.

The cab ride back to her empty house was a blur of passing streetlights and crushing nausea. Clara dragged her frail body inside, took her prescribed pills, and crashed heavily onto her bed. Exhaustion and illness dragged her into a deep, dark sleep.

She woke up groggy and disoriented the next morning. Bright morning light filtered through the curtains. The intense fever haze slowly parted, allowing her vision to focus.

Gemma sat by her bedside. She looked exhausted, having frantically rushed over directly from a redeye flight the second she heard the news.

"You just got out, and you are burning up like this?" Gemma shook her head. Deep sorrow filled her eyes. She reached over, handing Clara a fresh glass of water and another dose of pills. "I got here, and you were a mess. Anything you need, just say the word. I'm here."

Clara took the glass. She had no interest in spilling the dark details of the toll prison had taken on her. But looking at Gemma, a quiet warmth spread through her chest. It was a profound realization. Her own flesh and blood had miserably failed her. Her husband had thrown her to the wolves. But her best friend still steadfastly had her back.

Clara swallowed the bitter pills. She slowly lowered her heavy gaze to the half-empty glass in her hands. The fire in her eyes solidified into an unbreakable resolve.

"Draft me a divorce agreement," Clara said. "And help me find someone."
