Forced Atonement

He did not loosen his crushing grip until they reached the gravel driveway. Gideon yanked the passenger door of his luxury car open and shoved Tess inside with brute force. Before she could scramble away or protest, he leaned his imposing frame over her. He ripped the silk necktie from his collar, looped the sleek, unyielding fabric around her pale wrists, and lashed her hands to the passenger seat overhead handle. The knot was mercilessly tight, binding her in place to ensure she could not escape. He slammed the heavy door shut, leaving her trapped, and stalked around to the driver’s seat.

As the car tore down the empty road, the twin beams of the headlights pierced the darkness, casting a cold, lonely glow over the sleek dashboard. Bound tightly by the silk necktie, Tess stared coldly and blankly straight ahead through the windshield. She did not struggle against her restraints. She just sat there, hollowed out by grief.

Beside her, the tense silence stretched until Gideon’s indifferent, commanding voice shattered it.

"Val lost the baby because of you," he stated, his tone brooking no argument, demanding she take full responsibility. "Go to the hospital and take care of her. It is your responsibility."

*Responsibility.*

Tess let out a faint, hollow laugh. The dry sound sent a sudden chill through the confined space of the vehicle. She turned her head slowly, her deadened eyes locking onto his sharp profile.

"If I must care for Valerie to make up for her loss," she said, spacing each word out with deliberate, icy precision, "what about my child, Gideon? It was lost because of you. How do you plan to compensate for that?"

Gideon’s knuckles turned stark white as his long fingers tightened over the leather steering wheel. A brief, almost imperceptible flicker of genuine pain crossed his dark eyes. He pressed his lips into a thin, grim line. A heavy, unsettling sensation pooled in his chest—a sudden realization that Tess was rapidly slipping out of his grasp. She sat mere inches away, yet she felt like a fading phantom, ready to vanish into the night. His jaw tightened, but he remained stubbornly silent, offering no apology, no acknowledgment of her devastating trauma.

Upon their arrival at the hospital’s underground parking lot, Gideon killed the engine. He reached over and roughly untied the knot at the overhead handle. The silk pulled away, leaving raw, conspicuous red marks wrapped around her wrists. He did not give her a single second to breathe. He grabbed her arm again, dragged her out of the vehicle, and hauled her straight through the sterile white corridors.

He pushed her forcefully through the heavy door of the VIP hospital ward.

Inside the brightly lit room, the sharp smell of antiseptic mingled with expensive perfume. Valerie wept loudly, her shoulders shaking as she buried her face into the elegant arms of Audrey, Gideon’s sophisticated stepmother.

Audrey wore a pristine green evening gown draped with a burgundy shawl. Her hair remained meticulously coiled, a silver accessory catching the harsh hospital light. Hearing the door open, Audrey paused her comforting strokes. She wiped a dramatic tear from the corner of her own eye and stood up. She gave Tess a fleeting, cold glance before shifting her full attention to her stepson.

"Conrad is tragically gone now," Audrey instructed sternly, her voice echoing in the spacious suite. "You are the only one Val can rely on, Gideon. You must take exceptional care of her."

"I understand, Mother," Gideon replied respectfully.

Watching the wealthy older woman sweep out of the room, Tess felt a lingering, sickening dread settle deep in her stomach. Something was very wrong. Valerie had allegedly just miscarried Conrad’s prized, only bloodline because of Tess’s supposed malice. Yet Audrey showed no outward anger toward Tess. She displayed no deep resentment over the loss of her grandson. Instead, Audrey was subtly, yet clearly, pushing Gideon directly toward his late brother's grieving wife.

Gideon stepped out of the room into the hallway to speak with the attending doctor. The moment the heavy door clicked shut behind him, the atmosphere inside the ward shifted instantly.

A smug, arrogant smirk replaced Valerie's theatrical grief. She leaned back against the plush pillows, crossing her arms over her pink-striped hospital gown. The tears vanished without a trace.

"Was it hard to keep up the act these past three months?" Tess asked sharply.

She knew Valerie’s true, sinister goal all along. Valerie never wanted Conrad's child. She had planned to casually discard the unwanted baby and fiercely cling to Gideon, the newly cemented sole heir to the vast Drexel empire.

"Tess, what on earth are you talking about?" Valerie mocked, feigning innocence, though her eyes glinted with malicious triumph. "I don't get it."

Then, without warning, Valerie threw her body heavily over the edge of the mattress. She crashed onto the hard hospital floor with a loud, deliberate thud, feigning sudden, extreme physical weakness.

Purely out of deeply ingrained instinct, Tess stepped forward. She reached out her hand to help the fallen woman up.

Just as her fingers neared Valerie’s shoulder, the heavy door pushed open.

Gideon froze in the doorway. His dark eyes locked onto the scene: Valerie sprawled on the tiles, looking battered, and Tess standing over her with an outstretched hand.

His expression darkened into pure, blind rage.

He stormed across the room in two massive strides and shoved Tess aside with brute force.

Tess flew backward. Her back and shoulder crashed hard against the solid wall. Pain exploded in her arm.

"Gideon, don't blame Tess," Valerie choked out, her voice trembling perfectly on cue. She leaned heavily into his strong arms, flawless in her role as the helpless victim once again. "She just... loves you too much..."

Tess slid down the wall and collapsed onto the hard floor. The impact had ruptured her unhealed wound. Fresh, bright red blood bled profusely through her bandaged arm, staining her sleeve. She sat broken on the cold tiles. She tilted her head back, laughing bitterly and loudly at the powerful man she had blindly loved for ten long years.

He was so willfully blind. He turned a blind eye to her brutal, forced miscarriage. He ignored her terrifying abduction. Yet he was so effortlessly and easily deceived by Valerie's shallow, pathetic tricks. The contrast tore a jagged hole in her chest.

Blinking back the thick tears that aggressively blurred her vision, Tess grabbed the edge of a bedside table. She pulled her aching body up from the ground, ignoring the sharp sting radiating from her bleeding arm.

She looked Gideon dead in the eye.

"Since you're so concerned about her, Mr. Drexel, you should be on guard," Tess sneered, a mocking smile curling on her lips. "I might strike at her any time. After all, I'm heartless, cunning, and wicked."

She turned sharply on her heel and marched toward the door to leave the toxic room.

But as she grabbed the handle, two massive, suited security guards stepped into the frame, their broad shoulders instantly blocking her exit.

Gideon’s cold, uncompromising order struck her back. "You are permanently confined to this room. You will stay here and serve Valerie hand and foot."

Tess stared at the stone-faced guards. Any physical escape was impossible against his men. The crushing weight of her entrapment settled over her shoulders. Without a word of protest, she turned around. She walked over to the small, uncomfortable corner couch and sat down quietly.

She stared blankly ahead. Her eyes tracked Gideon as he settled into a chair beside the hospital bed. He picked up an apple and a paring knife. His muscular hands moved with unexpected gentleness as he carefully cut the fruit into small, perfect pieces, attentively feeding them to Valerie.

Tess watched them intimately interact. She emotionally detached herself from the sickening display. She silently consoled herself with a grim thought. Just a little more continuous heartache. A little more of this torture, and it would finally be enough to numb her to the suffocating pain. She just had to endure until the numbness took over.

That night, the three of them slept in the suffocating confines of the hospital room.

Valerie occupied the main bed, Gideon took the adjacent caregiver's cot, and Tess curled up on the small, rigid couch. The room grew pitch black, save for the faint glow of the medical monitors.

Deep into the quiet, dead hours of the night, the hospital grew eerily still. Tess shivered in her sleep, her body aching and cold. Through the haze of exhaustion, she faintly sensed a tall, heavy presence standing silently right beside her couch.

She did not open her eyes, but she could feel the weight of a gaze fixed upon her. The dark figure seemed to stand there, watching her intently for a very long time in the shadows. Then, a sudden, unexpected warmth draped over her, slowly enveloping her cold body against the chill of the night...
