Echoes of Regret

The biting scent of harsh medical antiseptic replaced the metallic stench of rain and fresh mud. Tess Dalton opened her heavy eyes to a sterile, bright white ceiling. The furious storm that had mercilessly claimed her unborn child was gone, leaving behind the hauntingly quiet confines of a cold hospital room. She lay motionless on the desolate hospital bed. Her battered body felt like a hollowed-out shell, stripped of all life and warmth. The agonizing, intrusive memories of her wedding day flashed through her mind like a cruel taunt. She vividly remembered standing at the altar in her pristine white gown, gazing into Gideon Drexel's dark eyes, solemnly swearing she would never regret marrying him. Now, utterly destroyed following the devastating miscarriage on the freezing driveway, the bitter, suffocating sting of profound regret consumed her. She regretted every second. She regretted every heartbeat devoted to a man who wanted her baby dead.

Her stark isolation in the dimly lit room was sharply interrupted by hushed, gossiping whispers. Two nurses lingered near the slightly ajar doorway, pushing a squeaking IV cart.

"She comes from a wealthy family too, but the treatment sure is quite different," one nurse murmured, her voice carrying easily in the dead silence of the ward.

"Tell me about it," the second nurse replied. "Poor Valerie Keene. Her husband passed away not long ago, and now she's had a miscarriage. They say she lost the baby after being pushed down the stairs by her sister-in-law. It seems unfair that life is hardest on the kindest people. Yet, her unique bond with the Drexel brothers is truly remarkable."

Tess lay paralyzed. Her sister-in-law. They meant her.

The first nurse sighed heavily. "No wonder the VIP room next door is packed. The entire Drexel family is gathered there. Mr. Gideon Drexel stayed overnight to tend to Valerie. Mr. Edgar, the old lady of the family, and a bunch of servants are all hovering over her. But this room? It is so cold and empty."

"In high society, it is all about marrying your equal," the second nurse noted casually. "Valerie is the cherished pride of the Keene family. Tess was once the Dalton family's lady, but with the real daughter's return, she is just an adopted child burdened with a mysterious past. No one cares about her."

The nurses pushed the cart inside the room. They jumped back, startled to see Tess awake. Her face was devoid of color. Her eyes, dark and empty like a still pond untouched by the storm, stared straight ahead.

"How bad is the damage?" Tess asked. Her voice was a dry, raspy whisper that barely broke the silence.

The nurses exchanged a nervous, hesitant glance. One stepped closer, checking the medical chart. "Mrs. Drexel... your violent miscarriage caused severe complications. The trauma has permanently damaged your uterus. This drastic physical damage complicates any hopes of future pregnancies. You may never conceive again."

The cruel, devastating medical news settled over Tess like a heavy, suffocating shroud. She absorbed the brutal reality in total isolation. Not a single member of the Drexel family had come to check if she survived the night. Her husband was right next door, showering another woman with the warmth and concern Tess had desperately begged for while bleeding out in the mud.

A dark, masochistic urge surged through her veins. She needed to witness the truth with her own eyes. She needed to see the reality of her marriage to kill whatever pathetic, lingering fragments of hope remained in her battered chest.

Tess forced her frail, aching body out of the bed. The thin hospital gown offered no protection against the ambient chill. She dragged her bare feet across the cold tiles. A sharp, pulling pain radiated from her traumatized lower abdomen with every step, but she ignored it. She leaned her weight heavily against the handrails along the wall, slowly navigating the empty, brightly lit corridor. The sterile silence of the hallway pressed intensely against her ringing ears.

As she approached the pristine glass doors of the adjacent VIP ward, her worst fears physically materialized before her. The glass was so clean it offered a perfect, unobstructed view into the luxurious room.

Through the transparent barrier, she saw Gideon. The very man who had held her countless times, the man who had mercilessly demanded her baby’s life just hours ago, was now sitting on the edge of the large hospital bed. He was protectively cradling Valerie in his embrace. Valerie’s delicate form rested against his broad chest, her arms wrapped tightly around his waist. He stroked her hair with a gentle, devoted reverence he had never once shown Tess.

Valerie’s weak, trembling, and sobbing voice faintly echoed through the thick glass, violently shattering whatever fragile illusions Tess still harbored.

"Gideon, please don't be harsh on Tess," Valerie murmured softly, burying her tear-stained face into his expensive shirt. "I believe it was a mistake. After all, she has had a hard life. You only married her to put your own mind at ease and to comfort Conrad before he passed."

Tess stopped breathing. The manipulative sweetness in Valerie’s tone made her empty stomach churn.

Valerie shifted, gazing up at Gideon with wide, tearful eyes. "She always believed you loved her. Yet in the end, you were using her as a convenient shield to hide your true feelings."

The sheer weight of this revelation paralyzed Tess. The agonizing words echoed loudly in her mind, repeating like a brutal death sentence.

*You were using her as a convenient shield.*

*She always believed you loved her.*

Ten years of blind, desperate devotion. One year of marriage. All of it was nothing but a cold, calculated manipulation. He never loved her. He used her to hide his forbidden affection for his dead brother's wife. He demanded Tess's baby die in the mud as a twisted offering to avenge Valerie's loss.

Pressing her advantage, Valerie stroked Gideon’s chest. "Once I faced death, I grasped life's true value. My child isn't dead. He just went to keep Conrad company. Gideon, my child is tragically gone, and Tess's child is gone too. There are no more physical or moral barriers left between us." She reached up, softly urging him. "I don't want to waste any more time. Let's start a brand new life together."

The agonizing, undeniable realization tore through Tess’s fragile mind. She stood rooted to the spot, her mouth dropping open in a silent, suffocating scream. The crushing pain in her chest eclipsed the physical agony of her ruined womb. Choking back her violent sobs, her legs finally gave out. She collapsed weakly onto the hard hallway floor. Desperate to maintain silence, she bit down viciously on her own lower lip. Her teeth pierced the soft skin, drawing a sharp tang of copper blood, preventing any sound from escaping.

Inside the room, Gideon seemingly sensed a presence. He turned his head to look directly at the door.

Through the clear glass, he saw only an empty hallway. Tess crouched low below the window frame, her tears silently hitting the floor tiles. Desperate to flee the crushing, suffocating emotional pain, she scrambled up. She forced her leaden legs to move and fled the hospital ward.

She burst through the heavy rear exit doors, retreating into a dark, secluded corner of the building. The freezing night air hit her flushed face. In the shadows, her profound mental anguish manifested physically. She crouched on the wet pavement, her breathing erratic and shallow. She aggressively clawed at her own arms. Her fingernails dug deep into her pale flesh, dragging downward with terrifying force. She tore at her skin until thick blood beads formed and dripped onto the concrete. She ripped deeper, silently agonizing over the sheer, unfathomable cruelty of Gideon's actions. She felt no pain in her arms. The physical self-harm was the only release for the psychological shattering inside her head.

Dazed, broken, and numb to her bleeding arms, Tess eventually pushed herself off the cold ground. Trails of crimson blood stained her skin and the torn sleeves of her hospital gown, presenting a stark and harrowing sight. She wandered aimlessly out of the hospital gates and into the freezing, cool night air. The city streets were desolate, echoing her profound internal emptiness.

She walked blindly down the road, shivering as the chill bit into her fresh wounds. Suddenly, the glaring headlights of a vehicle violently pierced the surrounding darkness.

A sleek black vehicle sped out of the gloom. It screeched to an abrupt halt directly beside her on the empty road. The harsh smell of burning rubber filled the air. Before Tess could turn her head, the heavy car doors flew open.

Several large men dressed in black swarmed out into the street. They moved with terrifying speed, surrounding her in a tight circle. Before her exhausted mind could register the immediate danger or formulate a reaction, a man lunged forward. A thick black cloth was thrown over her head, instantly cutting off her vision and plunging her into suffocating darkness.

A sharp pain struck her neck, and everything instantly faded into darkness.
