The Alpha King's Prey

I have no concept of time as my wolf, Ivory, pushes her legs to the absolute limit. The dark woods blur into a continuous smear of brown trunks and shadowy green. We run until the damp earth beneath her paws gives way to jagged rocks, until the scent of our former pack fades into nothingness. We are far beyond the borders of our former territory, plunging deep into lands that do not care about a broken mating bond. My lungs burn. The physical exhaustion masks the raw, bleeding wound Darius left in my soul. Leaving the pack was a reckless death sentence, but returning is an impossibility. Returning means submitting to a life where my mate parades my sister, Celia, as his chosen Luna. It means enduring my parents' sickening betrayal every single day. I am packless. I have nowhere left to turn.

As exhaustion overtakes Ivory, her massive white paws stumble over a thick, exposed root. She drops her head, panting hard into the crisp night air. *I need to rest, Maeve,* her voice echoes in my mind, heavy with fatigue. *You take over.* She does not wait for my response. The retreat is instantaneous, forcing the shift upon my exhausted body.

I collapse onto the damp grass as fur recedes into skin. The agonizing sensation of bones breaking and reforming ripples through me. My spine arches in the dirt, vertebrae snapping back into human alignment, joints popping as limbs shorten. I bite down on my lower lip, tasting copper. When the brutal transformation concludes, I lie shivering on the forest floor, my human muscles aching in protest.

The crisp September breeze brushes against my bare skin, sending a chill down my spine. I force my heavy limbs to move, crawling over to the worn leather satchel I dragged along during the escape. My hands tremble as I pull out spare clothes—a faded pair of denim jeans and a simple cotton shirt. I drag the fabric over my bruised skin. Sitting up, I wrap my arms around my knees and scan the dense, imposing tree line. Ivory had sniffed the air just before the shift. There were no other wolf scents. We are safe, for this fleeting moment.

A tiny spark of hope ignites in my chest. Perhaps I can start fresh. The human world is vast and indifferent to werewolf politics. I could move to a crowded city, find a mundane job, and live quietly among them. I could exist free from the suffocating pain of pack hierarchies, free from the cruel whispers, and free from the betrayal that tore my life apart.

But this brief moment of solace is shattered by a sharp snap.

A thick branch breaks in the brush behind me. I freeze, my breath catching in my throat. Every muscle tenses into rigid anticipation. Ivory stirs within my mind, her instincts flaring into high alert. I scramble to my feet and pivot, scanning the impenetrable shadows of the pines. I flare my nostrils, drawing deep breaths of the cool air, trying to catch a scent. Nothing. The breeze carries only damp earth and pine needles. Darius once told me certain rogue factions can mask their scent to ambush their prey.

From the shadows, movement catches my eye. A massive gray wolf steps into the dappled moonlight, its predatory yellow eyes fixed on me. A low, rumbling growl vibrates in its chest. Before I can step back, another gray beast slinks out from the brush on my right. Then a third emerges from the left. They form a tight, unyielding semicircle.

I take a cautious step backward, my heel sliding on loose dirt. I glance over my shoulder, and my stomach drops. The ground falls away into a steep, jagged drop-off. An unscalable cliff. I am systematically cornered.

The lead wolf lifts his snout, sniffing the air with slow, deliberate breaths. He catches the scent of my fear, the scent of a rogue female with no protective mark. A sickening grin seems to stretch across his canine features. Bones crack and fur ripples as he forces the shift. Within seconds, a bulky, towering man stands in the wolf's place, wearing dark, rugged clothes. The other two follow, morphing into massive, broad-shouldered men with cruel smirks plastered across their faces.

Their dark, malicious intentions suffocate the air. As a packless, unprotected female wandering during mating season, I am the easiest of prey. I have no Alpha to avenge me, no packmates to hear my screams.

Before I can even brace my legs to fight, the lead man lunges. His speed is a blur of brutal motion. He swings his heavy fist, striking the side of my face with bone-crushing force. The impact explodes through my skull. My feet leave the ground as the hit sends me flying backward. My spine slams agonizingly into the thick trunk of a massive pine tree. The air is punched from my lungs in a harsh gasp, leaving me choking on nothingness.

I slide down the rough bark, my vision swimming with black spots. Before I can draw a single breath, another man is on top of me. He twists his large, calloused hand into my hair, yanking my head back so hard my neck pops. He pins me against the tree trunk with effortless strength. I thrash, trying to kick out, but his grip is iron. His other hand grabs the collar of my cotton shirt. With a sickening, harsh jerk, he tears the fabric straight down the middle.

The crisp air bites at my exposed chest as the ruined shirt hangs off my shoulders. The men laugh, a dark, guttural sound making my blood run cold. Sharp pain flares through my spine as the third man steps up, slamming his heavy body against mine. He wraps his massive hand around my throat, squeezing hard, choking off my air supply.

"Look what we found roaming all alone," he sneers, his foul breath washing over my face. He shoves his heavy knee between my thighs, forcefully shoving my legs apart and pinning me to the trunk. My hands tear at his thick wrist, my nails scraping against his skin, but I am weak and battered.

My ears ring as I hear the sharp clink of metal. He undoes his belt buckle with his free hand, the leather sliding loose. He yanks his pants down, exposing his stiff, erect penis. He grinds his hips forward, preparing to force himself into me, to commit the unspeakable right here in the dirt.

A primal refusal to be a victim surges through my veins like a shot of pure adrenaline. The thought of dying here, defiled and broken by these monsters, ignites a blinding, white-hot rage. I will not die a victim.

Summoning every last ounce of my remaining strength, I twist my torso with a sudden, vicious jerk, breaking my right arm free from where the second man had pinned it. In a split second, I channel Ivory's raw power into my flesh. I morph my hand, bones cracking and reshaping as human fingernails lengthen into sharp, deadly wolf claws.

With a guttural scream, I lunge forward and plunge my arm straight into the center of my attacker's chest. My razor-sharp claws slice through his tough skin, punching through the muscle and shattering his ribcage with a sickening crunch. I shove my hand deep into his hot, wet chest cavity. My fingers find the heavy, rapid thumping muscle of his heart. I wrap my claws around it, squeezing tight, and with a brutal pull, I rip it out of his chest.

Warm, dark blood sprays in a massive arc, coating my face, my bare chest, and the rough bark behind me. The man staggers backward, the hand around my throat going instantly slack. His eyes are wide with uncomprehending shock. He looks down at the gaping, bloody cavern in his chest, blood pouring from his mouth, and then his gaze drops to my hand. I stand there, chest heaving, clutching his still-twitching heart in my blood-soaked palm. His knees buckle, and he collapses lifeless into the dirt, hitting the ground with a final thud.

Utter, paralyzing shock freezes the other two men. They stare at the dead body of their companion, their cruel smirks melting into masks of horror. As I look down at my dripping hand and the mangled organ, the adrenaline begins to crash, replaced by a terrifying realization. I have just killed a pack wolf. For a rogue like me, an outcast with no protection, this is an undeniable death sentence. There are no trials for packless murderers. Only immediate execution.

The shock on the men's faces rapidly twists into furious, murderous rage. "You just killed Garret!" one of the men roars, spit flying from his lips. He bares his teeth, his eyes flashing with lethal intent. "You bitch!"

He steps over Garret's corpse, raising his heavy, clawed hand to strike me down and snap my neck. I brace myself against the tree, too exhausted to dodge.

Suddenly, a fluid, feline voice pierces the heavy, suffocating tension of the forest. The sound is calm, yet it carries a weight that makes the ground tremble.

"Now, now. I never taught you to hit women, have I?"

The two aggressive males freeze mid-step. All the murderous rage drains from their posture in an instant. They drop their aggressive stances, slumping as they back away from me in sheer, unadulterated terror. They bow their heads, exposing their necks in an instinctual display of submission.

Footsteps crunch softly on the dead leaves. A tall man strolls casually into the clearing. His presence hits me like a physical blow, a chilling wave of dominance that forces the air from my lungs. My knees buckle under the oppressive weight of his aura.

He stops a few feet away. His chilling, ocean-blue gaze lazily shifts from Garret’s hollow, bleeding chest to my bloodied, trembling hand. Finally, his eyes rake over my exposed, torn body, taking in the ripped shirt and the blood splattered across my flesh.

The blood in my veins turns to pure ice. I dare to meet his gaze. Every werewolf on the continent knows that face. It is Kieran Corvus, the Alpha King. He is the most feared, powerful man in existence, a ruler whose mere presence commands terrifying submission.

Without raising his voice, without shifting his gaze from my trembling form, he speaks to the cowering men. "Take Garret's corpse to the bogland."

His command holds the uncompromising edge of a steel blade. The two men do not utter a single word. They scramble forward, grabbing Garret's lifeless body, and vanish into the dark shadows of the trees in the blink of an eye.

I am left alone with him. The bloody heart slips from my numb fingers, dropping to the dirt with a wet smack. My body trembles uncontrollably under his calculating gaze. I pull the ruined edges of my shirt together with shaking hands, trying to cover my exposed chest.

"Now, what shall I do to you, little wolf?" he muses, stepping closer. A dark, dangerous smile curves his lips.

He tilts his head, studying my face. "Your mate just rejected you," he states, the words effortless and sharp. He does not ask; he knows. "And from what I can smell, you don't belong to any pack. Not anymore."

"Your people attacked me first," I force out, my voice shaking so badly I can barely string the words together. I press my back harder against the trunk.

"You killed one of my people," he replies with effortless authority. "According to every pack's law, the punishment for killing a member is execution. And for a packless rogue like you, execution without trial."

Blind panic seizes my throat. I cannot die now. Not when I have just resolved to fight for a new life.

"You can't do this!" I scream desperately, my voice cracking. "They cornered me! They would have raped me and killed me if I hadn't fought back! It was self-defense!"

Kieran steps impossibly close. His towering, broad-shouldered presence suffocates my space, blocking out the moonlight.

"And for that, I commend your courage," he declares, his blue eyes locking onto mine, paralyzing me in place. "But you are coming with me."

Before I can scream, before I can raise my hands to fight him, a sudden, unnatural darkness clouds the edges of my vision. The heavy, magical weight of his aura presses into my skull, crushing my senses. My consciousness begins to slip away rapidly. I lose all feeling in my legs.

I collapse forward, falling limply into his strong, waiting arms. I am helpless, caught in the grip of the most dangerous man alive. The darkness swallows me whole.

His final, chilling words echo in my fading mind: "Sleep tight. I'll give you a swift death. Don't worry."
