The Girl in the Storage Room

Rowena’s sweet, persuasive tone hung in the air. Bridget rose gracefully from the matching loveseat, a practiced, elegant smile blossoming on her lips as she prepared to play the perfect hostess.

"Mr. Sinclair, please follow me," Bridget offered, her voice dripping with artificial warmth. She secretly admired her mother’s flawless tactic. Rowena had effortlessly dragged Valerie’s name through the mud, painting her as a tragic lunatic, while elevating Bridget to the status of a refined lady.

Alaric did not spare Bridget a single glance. He remained seated, his posture relaxed but his aura suffocatingly dangerous. "No need," he replied, his deep voice slicing through their carefully constructed charade. He saw right through their desperate maneuvering. Their blatant ambitions were written plainly across their faces. "Just call Valerie out."

His blunt dismissal hit them like a bucket of ice water. The triumphant smiles froze on both Rowena and Bridget’s faces.

Rowena’s expression faltered. "Mr. Sinclair..."

Ignoring her, Alaric stood to his full, imposing height. He buttoned his suit jacket with fluid precision and addressed his assistant standing dutifully behind him. "Dexter, Mr. Caldwell's house looks pretty decent. Let's go upstairs and check it out."

"Right away, boss," Dexter replied, stepping forward with eager anticipation.

Alaric paused at the base of the winding staircase. He cast a sharp, sideways glance at the patriarch of the house. "Mr. Caldwell, aren't you supposed to be guiding us?"

Wallace, Rowena, and Bridget exchanged stunned, panicky looks. This was not part of their script. Wallace swallowed hard, forcing a strained, trembling smile onto his sweaty face. "All right. I'll show you around, Mr. Sinclair."

Leaving Rowena’s stern face and Bridget’s anxious pacing behind in the living room, Alaric, Dexter, and Wallace began their slow ascent.

Wallace’s heart hammered against his ribs. He pushed open the heavy mahogany doors on the second floor, introducing each lavish guest suite, entertainment room, and study with a wavering voice. Every step felt like a march to the gallows under Alaric’s oppressive silence.

As they rounded the corner of the long hallway, Wallace gestured vaguely to a plain, narrow door tucked away in the shadows. "This is just a storage room. Let's head up to the third floor."

Alaric did not say a word. He let Wallace lead them up another flight of stairs, inspecting the upper levels in deafening silence.

After completing the third-floor tour, Wallace let out a small breath of relief and started leading them back toward the main staircase to the living room. But halfway down the second-floor corridor, Alaric’s long legs suddenly stopped. He turned his imposing frame toward the Caldwell patriarch.

"Mr. Caldwell," Alaric began, his lips curving into a faint smile that held the warmth of a drawn blade. "Would you mind if I take a look at that storage room?"

Wallace broke out in a cold sweat. Panic seized his chest. "Mr... Mr. Sinclair, there is nothing in there. Let's just go sit in the living room."

Ignoring the frantic protests, Alaric fixed his cold gaze on the narrow door at the end of the hall. He strode toward it without a second of hesitation. Dexter brushed past the trembling Wallace, trailing closely behind his boss. Dexter narrowed his eyes, his curiosity piqued. Alaric was acting highly unusual today, and Dexter knew better than to question it.

Alaric gripped the brass handle and shoved the door open.

The air in the room was stale. It was a suffocatingly small space, barely a hundred and ten square feet. The horrific living conditions hit Alaric like a physical blow. The cramped space held only a battered wardrobe, an ancient wooden desk with a wobbly chair, a sagging bookshelf crammed with worn books, and a tiny single bed tucked into the corner.

Curled up on that pathetic, narrow mattress was a small figure, sleeping soundly beneath a thin blanket.

Alaric stood in the doorway, absorbing the grim reality of the Caldwell household. A chilling, lethal hostility radiated from his body, dropping the temperature in the corridor. He stepped into the cramped room, his expensive leather shoes silent on the scuffed floorboards.

As he approached the bed, the sight of Valerie sleeping so deeply, oblivious to the chaos she had caused downstairs, managed to extinguish a fraction of his rage. A low, dry chuckle escaped his chest. She had no idea he was standing right beside her.

He leaned down, the scent of her faint, natural soap filling his senses. He reached out, his large hand brushing her soft hair aside to press the back of his fingers gently against her forehead. His protective touch confirmed she was not running a fever. She was merely exhausted.

"Little girl, wake up," Alaric murmured, his thumb lightly nudging the side of her head.

Wallace rushed into the doorway, his face pale, sweat rolling down his cheeks. Seeing Alaric hovering over the bed, he panicked and yelled out loudly, "Valerie! Valerie!"

Alaric whipped his head around, shooting Wallace a glare so terrifying and dominant that the older man instantly snapped his mouth shut, shrinking back against the doorframe.

On the bed, Valerie groaned. She groggily fluttered her eyes open. Her vision blurred, then sharpened, locking onto the striking, handsome face leaning over her. She jolted upright.

"What are you doing here?" she blurted out, looking at Alaric with pure shock.

"You invited me," Alaric replied calmly. He straightened his posture, crossing his arms over his broad chest. His mood had inexplicably improved watching her bewildered expression.

"Aren't you supposed to..." Valerie’s voice trailed off as she caught sight of Wallace standing by the door, his face twisted in an ugly mix of warning and fear. Her mind raced. What was happening? The Caldwell family guarded her existence like a dirty secret. Nobody was allowed in her room. Since she was twelve years old, she had lived in this claustrophobic box, and not a single soul—not even Donovan—had ever stepped foot inside. Wallace himself avoided this room like the plague.

"Valerie, please ask Mr. Sinclair to have a seat in the living room," Wallace demanded through gritted teeth, his eyes boring into hers with a silent threat.

Valerie instantly understood the unspoken message. Play along, or the deal is off. The thought of her final payment kicked her into gear. She threw off the blanket, slipped her bare feet into her worn canvas shoes, and ran a hand through her messy hair. "Let's go to the living room."

Alaric cast a sidelong glance at Dexter. The assistant offered a curt nod, silently understanding his boss's unspoken command.

Downstairs, the tension was thick enough to cut with a knife. Rowena perched on the edge of the designer sofa, fighting to maintain her composed facade. Bridget twisted her fingers together, her heart thumping anxiously. Alaric had just looked at her with such intensity earlier. What move should she make next to secure his attention?

Footsteps echoed on the stairs. The group descended, with Valerie trailing near the front. Her clothes were wrinkled from sleep, and her hair was a tousled mess, yet she carried a raw, unpolished beauty that made the lavish surroundings look fake.

She scanned the living room, her expression puzzled by the awkward standoff.

"Valerie," Bridget called out, injecting her voice with a thick layer of fake affection and sisterly warmth.

Valerie shuddered, goosebumps erupting down her arms at the sound of her name dripping with such artificial sincerity. One look at Bridget’s eager posture and Rowena’s desperate eyes, and Valerie figured out their exact game plan. They wanted to swap her out.

Perfect. She needed that money anyway.

"Alaric," Valerie said, stepping aside to gesture toward the blushing girl. "This is Bridget, my sister."

She caught the immediate, subtle relaxation in Wallace and Rowena’s shoulders. They thought it was working.

"I know," Alaric replied flatly. He did not shift his gaze toward Bridget. His dark eyes remained locked onto Valerie, tracking her every movement. Even in her rumpled clothes and messy hair, she possessed a gorgeous, captivating magnetism that he could not ignore.

Valerie frowned, puzzled by his calm, unbothered demeanor. Why wasn't he looking at the bait? Thinking of the 1.2 million dollars still owed to her, she forced a bright, salesman-like smile and pushed harder. "Bridget is twenty years old. She is very beautiful, gentle, and incredibly likable."

Alaric stared at her. He watched her struggle to find the right words to pawn him off to another woman. The muscle in his jaw twitched. "Okay," he finally said, his voice dangerously low.

Valerie raised her brows. What did 'okay' mean? Did he accept the trade?

Rowena seized the ambiguous opening. She flashed a dazzling smile and gestured to the plush seating area. "Mr. Sinclair, Valerie, let's sit down and chat."

Before anyone could move, Dexter came marching down the staircase. Gripped in his hands were Valerie's worn canvas bag and her laptop case.

"Mr. Sinclair, everything's ready," Dexter announced, stepping up beside his boss.

Alaric gave a curt nod. He turned to the girl in front of him. "Valerie, let's go."

Valerie blinked, utterly bewildered. "Go? Where?"

"To where we need to go," Alaric stated. Without waiting for her consent, he stepped into her personal space, wrapped his strong arm firmly around her waist, and practically hauled her toward the front door.

Bridget’s face crumbled. The practiced elegance shattered as tears welled up in her eyes. "Mr. Sinclair!" she cried out, abandoning her poise and hurrying after them.

Valerie struggled against the iron grip around her waist. She fought to keep her balance as Alaric dragged her toward the exit.

Annoyed by the commotion, Alaric stopped and looked over his shoulder. He pinned Wallace, Rowena, and Bridget with a cold, impatient glare. "Is there anything else?" he demanded, his tone dripping with such freezing contempt that it rooted the three of them to the floor.

Using the distraction, Valerie planted her feet and forcefully broke free from his grasp, stepping back two paces. She needed to close this deal right now.

"Mr. Sinclair, Bridget likes you and wants to be with you!" Valerie shouted, gesturing frantically toward her sister. "Given her great qualities, wouldn't you consider it?"

She finally understood that Bridget’s solo attempt had failed. If Valerie wanted the rest of her cash, she had to personally seal the transaction.

The air in the room instantly turned volatile.

Alaric closed the distance between them in a split second. The tender protectiveness he had shown upstairs vanished, replaced by an aggressive, overwhelming dominance. His large hand shot out, his long fingers wrapping tightly around Valerie’s delicate chin. He tilted her face up, forcing her to meet his furious, dark eyes.

"Little girl," Alaric growled, his voice vibrating with barely contained rage. "Do you know what you just said?"

Valerie gasped, startled by the sudden, fierce proximity. The heat of his body radiated against hers. She tried to jerk her head away, but his grip was unyielding. Panic and defiance flared in her chest. Instinctively, she brought both of her hands up, gripping his thick wrist, digging her fingers into his skin as she tried to pry his hand away from her face. She pushed against his solid chest, her breathing turning heavy and erratic in the struggle.

"Hey! Let go of me!" she demanded, her chest heaving against him as they wrestled in the middle of the foyer.

The physical friction, the heavy breathing, and the aggressive closeness of their bodies created a highly intimate, suggestive scene. Bridget stood paralyzed a few feet away, her nails biting into her palms. The sight of Alaric touching Valerie, of their bodies pressed together in such a raw, fiery struggle, made Bridget’s blood boil. Hot tears of humiliation threatened to spill down her cheeks.

Seeing Valerie’s desperate resistance, Alaric finally released her chin, only to swiftly capture her wrist in his grasp. He pulled her flush against his side, his face a mask of displeasure. How dare she push him away? How dare she try to hand him over to someone else?

Watching Alaric claim Valerie so possessively broke whatever restraint Bridget had left. Consumed by panic, jealousy, and sheer, spiteful malice, she decided to burn Valerie to the ground.

"Mr. Sinclair!" Bridget blurted out, her voice shrill and trembling with infinite grievance. "Valerie just said that if we give her 1.5 million dollars, she'll step aside and let me be with you!"
