Unseen Strings
The sharp clink of a crystal glass hitting a mahogany table cut through the quiet hum of the private dining room. Soft, golden lighting bathed the opulent walls of The Silver Crown, casting long shadows across Simon Roth’s flushed, heavily intoxicated face. He slouched in his chair, pouring another generous measure of amber liquid into his glass.
"Ms. Farris," Simon began, his words slurring together as he lifted the drink. His eyes swam with deep, unmistakable guilt. "I owe you an apology. A massive apology regarding the lead actress role. I promised you. I fought for it. But I couldn't deliver. I failed you, and I am deeply sorry."
Across the table, Celine sat with perfect posture, her hands folded neatly in her lap. Operating under her respected professional pseudonym, Aria Farris, she had seen her fair share of industry broken promises. She watched the renowned director unravel before her, feeling no personal animosity toward him. She knew his character. Simon treated the sanctity of art as a religion. If he had possessed any choice in the matter, Gemma would never have been allowed within ten miles of his set.
"Mr. Roth, there is no need for apologies," Celine said, her tone smooth, level, and free of blame. "I understand your hands were tied. It is not your fault."
She knew the reality of their business. Even a veteran director with awards lining his shelves could not stand firm against the crushing, suffocating weight of unlimited capital. Investors held the purse strings, and therefore, they held the power.
Simon exhaled a long, ragged breath, looking as though her forgiveness only made his guilt heavier. He did not wait for her to continue. He downed his drink in one desperate gulp. The premium alcohol seized his senses, turning his cheeks a mottled red. "Thank you for your understanding, Ms. Farris," he muttered, tracing the rim of his empty glass. "I swear to you, I will give this project my all. I will not let your brilliant script be tarnished."
Celine offered a faint, polite smile. She needed to steer this opening toward her real objective. "Mr. Roth," she started, keeping her voice casual, methodical. "Do you have any idea who is behind Gemma's sudden rise?"
Simon scrunched his face, his brows knitting together in genuine confusion. He shook his head clumsily. "I don't know. They keep to the shadows. It came from the top down."
Celine nodded slowly. It made sense. Whoever pulled these massive strings possessed enough power to remain entirely unseen, issuing untouchable orders for others to blindly execute.
Before she could press further, the heavy wooden door slid open. A waiter stepped in, carrying artfully plated dishes on a silver tray. For a brief second, the hallway was visible.
The interruption snapped whatever restraint Simon had left. The alcohol took the reins, plunging him into a loud, exhausting tirade. "This industry is dead!" he bellowed, ignoring the waiter. "It is a playground for rich men pushing their favorites. I have to grovel before these money-men. The young actors refuse to work! The veterans coast on their old glory! And the audiences? They want perfection but refuse to support real art!"
On the other side of the upscale restaurant, the atmosphere in a different, lavishly decorated private room felt like standing on thin ice.
Daphne stepped through the doorway, her designer heels clicking softly against the polished marble floor. She paused, letting her gaze sweep over the scene. Gideon lounged in a leather chair, his tall, imposing frame angled toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. The glittering city skyline reflected in his dark, unreadable eyes. One long, aristocratic finger tapped a slow, restless rhythm against the tabletop.
Taking a breath to center herself, Daphne painted on a flawless, sweet smile. She glided toward the table. "Sorry to keep you waiting, Gid."
The tapping stopped. Gideon turned his head, his expression chillingly distant. He looked at her as though she were a stranger who had simply wandered into the wrong room. "I haven't been waiting long," he replied. His voice held no warmth.
Daphne swallowed the sudden lump in her throat and slid into the chair opposite him. She gestured for the waiter to hand over the menu. "Anything you'd like to eat? Any preferences tonight?" she asked, testing the treacherous waters of his mood.
Gideon stared blankly for a long moment, as if her voice was mere background noise. He took a slow, deliberate sip of his ice water. "Anything is fine," he said, his tone dripping with detachment.
Daphne maintained her bright facade. "Alright then, I will take care of it." She placed their orders with practiced elegance, handing the menu back to the waiter. The moment the door clicked shut, she let out a soft, playful sigh. "Honestly, Tessa is something else. She invites us out for dinner and then bails on us at the last minute."
"It is fine. Without her, it is quieter," Gideon remarked. He stared back out the window. Tessa, his spoiled younger sister, possessed a notorious lack of boundaries.
Daphne chuckled delicately, covering her mouth. "Careful, Gid. If she hears that, she will throw a massive tantrum." She leaned forward, bridging the physical gap across the table, her sharp eyes studying his chiseled profile. It was time to test the real issue. "By the way, have you seen the entertainment headlines these past few days?"
A subtle, dangerous shift occurred in Gideon's demeanor. "Yes. I have seen them."
"And?" Daphne prodded, keeping her tone light, almost teasing.
Gideon set his glass down. The clink echoed loudly in the quiet room. He met her gaze with absolute, terrifying indifference. "You do not need to concern yourself with such trivial gossip. I have already instructed Tobias to handle the situation."
Daphne’s breath hitched.
"By now, the internet should be scrubbed clean," Gideon continued, issuing a cold guarantee. "I spoke to the PR team. Such scandalous incidents will never be permitted to happen again."
The words were a brutal, unmistakable rejection wrapped in polite corporate speak. Daphne felt the severe sting radiate through her chest. Her smile stiffened at the edges, but she refused to let it fall. She reached for her phone, opening a browser. Sure enough, the explosive articles romantically linking them together had vanished. Erased. As if they never existed.
"It doesn't bother me," Daphne lied, her voice tight. "As long as it doesn't cause you any trouble."
A suffocating silence descended over the table. The tension grew unbearable until a soft knock announced the waiter's return. Gourmet plates were set before them in smooth, practiced motions.
Daphne picked up her knife and fork. Since he refused to be linked to her, she needed to redirect his attention to the one person who constantly ruined her plans. She sliced a small piece of steak, chewing it delicately before dropping her calculated, highly toxic observation.
"Oh, that reminds me," she said casually, as if recalling a minor detail. "I think I saw Ms. Thorne earlier today."
Gideon's face remained an impassive mask of stone. He did not blink. He did not move.
Daphne watched him like a hawk. "She seems to have a new boyfriend. This one is quite a bit older. Wealthy-looking. Definitely a step up from the young guy picking her up from the hospital last time." She paused, swirling her wine glass. "Well, it makes sense. A woman as beautiful as Ms. Thorne is bound to have men vying for her attention. It is only natural for her to find some... generous admirers."
Gideon pushed his chair back. The wood scraped harshly against the floor. He stood up, towering over the table. "I am going to the restroom. Take your time."
He didn't wait for a reply. He strode out of the room without another word, his broad shoulders tense, leaving the door to click shut behind him.
Daphne sat frozen. The second she was alone, her elegant, sweet facade shattered into pieces. She dropped her silverware. The clatter rang out in the empty room. She stared blankly at the empty chair across from her, the heavy silence of her own failure pressing down on her chest.
She raised a trembling hand and flagged down a passing server through the glass partition. "Pack me a dessert to go," she ordered, her voice hollow.
Meanwhile, in the private room down the hall, Simon’s headache-inducing monologue showed no signs of stopping. He ranted about casting directors, budget cuts, and lazy producers.
Celine pressed two fingers to her throbbing temples. She needed an escape. "Mr. Roth," she interrupted gently but firmly. "Paige has been in the restroom for ages. I had better step out and check on her. Excuse me for a moment."
She didn't wait for him to protest. She grabbed her clutch and slipped out the door, pulling it mostly shut behind her.
The opulent, softly lit hallway was a stark contrast to the stifling air of the private room. Celine took a deep breath, but the relief died in her throat.
Standing just a few feet away, radiating a dark, suffocating aura, was Gideon.
Their eyes locked. His fathomless, brooding gaze hit her with the force of a physical blow. It possessed the undeniable power to shatter her carefully constructed composure, making her heart hammer wildly against her ribs. He stood frozen, staring at her, a storm brewing in his dark eyes.
Before Celine could process the encounter, the heavy door behind her was yanked ajar. Simon’s heavily drunken, overly affectionate voice bellowed out into the quiet corridor for anyone to hear.
"Ms. Farris! Don't take too long!" he slurred loudly, his voice echoing off the marble walls. "I have so much more to say to you! I'll be waiting! You are the only one who truly gets me!"
The timing was disastrous.
Gideon’s jaw clenched. The storm in his eyes crystallized into pure, unadulterated contempt. His lips curled into a cold, deeply disdainful smirk as his gaze swept over her from head to toe, judging her, degrading her in a single look.
"So this is what you have sunk to?" Gideon sneered, his voice a venomous lash. "Not picky at all, are you? Is money truly that important to you that you would stoop to this level?"
Celine’s blood boiled. She glanced around the corridor, noting a few patrons turning their heads at the noise. Desperate to avoid a humiliating, explosive public scene, she ignored his cruel words, turned on her heel, and started to walk away.
She didn't make it two steps.
Gideon’s hand shot out with terrifying speed. His long fingers clamped around her arm like a steel vice. He yanked her sharply backward, pulling her forcefully right up against his solid, unyielding chest.
The physical impact dazed her. She stumbled, her breath catching as she was instantly enveloped by his overwhelming, intoxicating scent of rich cedarwood and crisp mint. The heat of his body burned through the thin fabric of her dress.
Gideon ducked his head, his face brushing intimately against her sensitive ear. His hot breath sent involuntary shivers down her spine, but his words were meant to destroy.
"Tell me," he whispered aggressively, his voice dropping into a humiliating, degrading register. "Just how much does it pay to act as an old man's desperate sugar baby? Two hundred grand? Three hundred grand?"
Celine’s eyes flashed with absolute fury. She shoved her hands against his chest, trying to wedge some space between them. "Let go of me immediately," she demanded, her voice icy and trembling with rage. "Stop projecting your filthy, twisted thoughts onto my reality!"
His iron grip only tightened painfully around her waist, refusing to yield an inch. He leaned in closer, his dark eyes flashing with danger and dark amusement.
"Filthy thoughts?" Gideon taunted, a cruel smile playing on his lips. "Why don't we talk about your filthy actions instead? If it is merely money you are after, you are looking in the wrong place." He trailed his gaze down her neck, arrogant and mocking. "You should just beg me properly. Who knows? I might even be significantly more generous than your pathetic old lover."
The unbearable tension shattered in an instant.
Celine wrenched her arm free. She swung her hand through the air with every ounce of strength she possessed.
Smack!
The sharp, resounding strike echoed all the way down the elegant corridor. Her palm connected violently against his aristocratic cheek, the impact stinging her own skin.
Gideon’s head snapped to the side. The hallway vibrated with the catastrophic fallout of the slap.
Trembling uncontrollably with a volatile mixture of profound rage and sheer disbelief, Celine glared at the side of his face. Her chest heaved.
"What the hell is fundamentally wrong with you, Gideon?" she spat furiously, her voice ringing out in the suffocating silence.
