The sickening splash of Lyra hitting the freezing river shattered the heavy tension on the cliff. My lungs seized. A massive blur of thick grey muscle and bared teeth had slammed into her out of nowhere, sending her fragile body plummeting over the jagged edge.

"Lyra!" Her frantic, distressed scream cut off the moment the dark water swallowed her whole.

I lunged toward the precipice.
