“All done,” the nurse said softly as she tied the last bandage on my arm.

I muttered a quiet,

“Thank you,” and rose from the chair, flexing my fingers slightly, wincing as the skin beneath the gauze protested. I didn’t wait for any further instructions or words of pity; I just left.
