The Bitter Escape

Valeria’s POV

I lay paralyzed on the cold floorboards. The phantom friction between my thighs finally dulled into a raw, sickening ache, leaving behind a cold devastation that seeped deep into my marrow. I gasped for air, my fingers digging rigidly into the center of my chest. I searched for a steady heartbeat, but the rhythm was erratic, bruised, and broken. Hot tears blurred my surroundings, turning the shadowy corners of my bedroom into shifting, gray smears.

My mate. The male specifically chosen for me by the Moon Goddess was currently walking away. He was leaving the territory, and he was taking my sister, Nadia, with him.

I pressed my palms flat against the rough wood, pushing my trembling body upright. Every muscle protested. The residual sting of his false mating with Nadia lingered in my core, a cruel, mocking reminder of the bond that had been hijacked and mutilated. Deep within the recesses of my mind, I reached inward, searching for the familiar, comforting presence of my wolf.

I met only a vast, chilling void.

She was silent. Shattered by the ultimate betrayal, my wolf retreated so deep into the dark corners of our shared consciousness that I could not feel her brushing against my soul. I whispered to her in the darkness of my mind, begging for a flicker of her strength, but the mental cavern remained empty. The trauma of the severed tether silenced her. We were cut off from each other, drowning in mutual, suffocating agony.

How was it possible that he couldn't feel the overwhelming strength of our bond? A mate bond was a primal, magnetic force forged by the divine. Yet he walked away, oblivious to the fact that his true mate bled out on the floor directly above him.

Dragging myself up, my knees buckling with every inch, I reached the window. I gripped the wooden sill. I peered through the glass, forcefully torturing myself with the view of the driveway bathed in pale, unforgiving moonlight.

Gideon stood beside a sleek, dark vehicle. I forced my eyes to remain open, absorbing the sight of his large, protective hand resting intimately on the dip of Nadia's lower back. That touch was my birthright. That protective stance, the heat of his palm against her skin—it all belonged to me.

Nadia turned to him, her face glowing with a radiant, sickening excitement. She wrapped her arms around his neck. He leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of her ear as he murmured something low and private. Nadia let out a soft, musical laugh. The sound floated up through the open crack of my window and drifted into my room. Every shared laugh, every hushed whisper exchanged under the moonlight felt like coarse salt poured directly into an open, bleeding wound.

A feral urge to scream clawed at my throat. I wanted to smash the window pane with my bare fists. I wanted to hurl my body through the shattered glass, land on the gravel below, and rip them apart. I wanted to expose Nadia as a treacherous thief to the entire pack. I wanted to force Gideon to look at me, to lock eyes with me so the mate bond could snap into place and break whatever delusion held him captive.

But the chilling echo of my father’s voice acted as a heavy muzzle.

*Stay quiet, Valeria. You don't deserve him. Nadia is the perfect Luna, not you.*

My jaw clenched until my teeth ground together. My own father meticulously manipulated reality. He orchestrated this nightmare, discarding me like a piece of worthless garbage to elevate his favored heir. He stood by and watched as his golden child usurped my existence, just as she had done since childhood.

I watched the taillights of their car flare red. The tires crunched against the gravel. The vehicle pulled away from the pack house, driving past the massive iron gates. I stared until the red lights bled into the darkness of the night, disappearing beyond the tree line.

An immense, suffocating weight settled over my lungs. The people who shared my blood, the people who were bound by nature to protect me, had gleefully handed my destiny to my sister.

Stumbling back from the window, I lost my footing. I collapsed onto my mattress. My hands bunched into the heavy blankets, twisting the fabric as a bone-chilling clarity washed over my trembling frame. I had no mate. I had no family. My wolf was gone, buried under a mountain of trauma.

I was fundamentally alone in this world.

The heavy wooden door groaned open. The harsh click of the metal lock turning echoed in the silent room.

I did not want to move, but survival instincts forced my head up. Lifting my tear-stained face from the damp pillow, I met the sight of my father standing in the doorway. A sickening, victorious smile plastered across his sharp features. He looked pleased. He looked like a man who had just successfully executed a flawless business transaction, trading my soul for his pack's elevated status.

"What do you want, Father?" I shrieked.

The raw volume of my voice startled even me. The sound bounced off the walls, sharp and jagged. It was the first time in my entire life I dared to defy him aloud. I had spent two decades shrinking under his gaze, swallowing my pride, trying to earn a single scrap of his approval. The obedient, fearful daughter died the moment Gideon drove away.

My father took a slow, calculated breath. He smoothed the lapels of his expensive coat, feigning paternal concern. "I just came to see how you are doing, Valeria."

"Or did you come to inspect the damage of your betrayal?" I spat, viciously cutting off his hollow words. Venom dripped from every syllable I fired at him.

His smile remained fixed, stretching tight across his jaw, but a dark, dangerous storm brewed in his eyes. The false concern vanished, replaced by the ruthless Alpha who ruled through intimidation. Stepping fully into my room, he let the door swing shut. He unspooled his dominant aura, filling the small space with a heavy, crushing pressure. He utilized his towering physical presence in a deliberate attempt to force my submission, expecting me to bare my neck and cower.

I gripped the bedsheets. I kept my chin raised.

"You should watch your tone, Valeria," he warned. His voice was a sickeningly smooth drawl devoid of remorse. "You act like this is the end, but it is not. You will learn to accept your place."

"My place?" I echoed. A harsh, bitter laugh ripped from my throat, burning my vocal cords. I pushed myself up, sitting rigid on the edge of the mattress. My fists tightened, my knuckles turning white. "And where exactly is that place, Father? Hidden in the shadows? Forced to watch my mate love a thief? Condemned to endure endless betrayals by my own family?"

He emitted a theatrical sigh, rolling his shoulders as if burdened by a petulant child. He looked down his nose at me, a mask of feigned disappointment settling over his face.

"Nadia possesses the inherent grace of a Luna," he stated, callously driving the final nail into the coffin of our relationship. "You are fundamentally flawed. You were never fit for the role, and you know it. She is meant to rule. You are not."

I stared into the cold, calculating eyes of the man who sired me. A growl vibrated deep in my chest, a human sound born from raw agony. I trained harder than Nadia. I bled on the training grounds while she hosted tea parties. I studied pack law while she shopped in the human cities. None of it mattered. The game was rigged from the start.

"Why?" My voice cracked, the vulnerability slipping through the cracks of my rage. "Why do you hate me so much?"

He paused. The ambient light from the hallway caught the sharp angles of his face. I searched his expression for a flicker of guilt, a microscopic trace of regret. I found nothing but absolute, sub-zero indifference.

He looked at me as if looking at a stain on his rug. He delivered the fatal psychological blow without a shred of hesitation.

"You were never meant to be here."

The words stopped my heart. They echoed in the quiet room, ringing in my ears like a death knell. *Never meant to be here.* I was an accident. An unwanted burden he finally managed to discard. He actively confirmed his role in destroying my life, proving he manipulated the mate selection just to rid himself of his greatest disappointment.

"Now," he ordered, his tone hardening into solid stone. "Cease this pathetic crying. Nadia and the Alpha King will be happy together, and you will stay out of their way. Do you understand me?"

The suffocating despair vanished. A terrifying, volcanic rage ignited in my bloodstream, burning away the sorrow and drying my tears. The heat of it pumped through my veins, blinding and intense. I stood up, rising to my full height. I was smaller, weaker, but the pure, undiluted fury radiating from my bones made me immovable.

"Get out!" I shrieked.

The sheer hatred in my voice vibrated off the walls, rattling the glass pane of the window. I pointed a trembling finger at the door.

"Don't you dare think you have a daughter named Valeria from now on," I spat, my chest heaving with every ragged breath. "I forbid you from ever considering me your own. You are nothing to me."

He tilted his head slightly. He studied my fury for a brief moment, unbothered by the venom in my eyes. He let out a dismissive, patronizing chuckle, amused by my broken defiance.

"As you wish," he murmured.

He turned his back on me, his boots heavy on the wooden floorboards. Reaching the door, he wrapped his hand around the brass knob. He paused, throwing a final, arrogant claim over his shoulder.

"You will see, Valeria. This arrangement is for the best."

He stepped into the hallway. The heavy door clicked shut behind him. The metallic sound finalized my isolation, sealing the verbal severance of our relationship.

I stood in the center of the dark room. I stared at the wood grain of the closed door. My body trembled, shaking with a violent intensity, but not from sorrow. A massive surge of desperate adrenaline flooded my nervous system. The weeping, broken girl who curled up on the floor was dead.

A dark labyrinth of questions consumed my racing mind. The mate bond was an ancient, sacred magic forged by the Moon Goddess. How did my father and Nadia manage to obscure it? How did they blind an Alpha King? Gideon was a powerful, dominant wolf. He should have felt the magnetic pull the second he stepped onto our territory. He should have recognized my scent and dragged me to his side. Did they use a binding potion? A witch's spell? Did they mask my scent to ensure he only noticed Nadia?

It was a twisted, sick mystery. I clenched my jaw, tasting the metallic tang of blood from biting my cheek. I swore to the Goddess I would unravel the truth. I would uncover the exact method they used to manipulate the bond and steal my destiny.

But revenge required patience, and survival dictated my immediate actions.

If I stayed in this room, I would rot. My father would keep me locked away until Gideon and Nadia officially solidified their union before the entire werewolf council. Once the false bond was recognized by the elders, my father would likely marry me off to some low-ranking Alpha in a distant, brutal pack just to ensure my permanent silence.

I refused to be a pawn in his twisted game. I refused to let Nadia parade around with the Alpha King while I suffered in the shadows.

I had to escape the suffocating borders of this pack.

I pivoted away from the door and moved toward my closet. I dragged out a worn, dark duffel bag from the top shelf. I moved with sharp, precise intent, shoving thick clothes, sturdy boots, and the meager stash of cash I kept hidden inside a hollowed-out book into the bag. No more tears fell from my eyes. A solid, unbreakable resolve hardened my heart.

The pack patrol schedules flashed clearly in my mind. The midnight shift change happened in two hours. The western border near the jagged cliffs remained lightly guarded because the terrain was treacherous and steep. I knew those woods better than anyone. I ran those trails every single day to escape my father's oppressive house. My combat and survival training, the very things my father dismissed and mocked, would be my salvation tonight.

I zipped the duffel bag closed and slung the heavy strap over my shoulder. I glanced around the shadowy bedroom one last time. This place was never a home. It was a prison designed to keep me small.

I am leaving this territory tonight. And I am never coming back.
