Gliding Away the Past

The crisp, freezing air of the indoor ice rink bit lightly at Vivian’s cheeks the moment she and Hazel pushed through the heavy glass doors. Waiting for them by the pristine white railing stood Preston Cole. Dressed casually in his sleek practice gear, the rapidly rising figure skating prodigy looked breathtakingly handsome. He leaned against the icy boards, his tall, slender frame radiating a quiet, noble elegance that always seemed to draw every eye in the room.

"Hey, Vivian," he greeted her, his voice gentle and soft. A shy, genuine smile touched his lips, instantly putting both mother and daughter at ease.

Freed from the stifling, oppressive behavioral restraints of the Thorne household, little Hazel practically buzzed with boundless energy. She tilted her head back, her big eyes wide with sheer admiration. "Preston, you're so gorgeous, like Adonis," she blurted out, speaking her mind with innocent awe.

Preston chuckled warmly at her blunt, childish innocence, a faint flush dusting his cheeks. Reaching into his duffel bag, he pulled out a delicate, sparkling white bracelet and handed it down to the delighted girl.

Hazel squealed, eagerly securing the gift around her small wrist. She happily stepped away toward the edge of the ice, humming a little tune to herself as she played with her new treasure.

With the child out of earshot, Preston’s gaze softened further, filling with deep, palpable concern. "Vivian, I heard all about what happened with the divorce. Are you okay?" he asked, his dark eyes searching hers for any lingering traces of pain.

Shrugging off the heavy weight of the past four years, Vivian offered an easy, casual smile. "It's all in the past. I am doing good now."

Preston studied her face for a moment. Sensing she had not healed from the deep scars of her toxic marriage, he leaned forward. "Why don't we put on a spontaneous skating show together?" he suggested gently, hoping the physical activity would lift her spirits and keep her mind off the Thorne family. "Just for fun."

Tempted by the freeing idea, Vivian happily agreed. She quickly laced up her skates and brought a giggling Hazel onto the freezing ice.

Under Preston’s expert, patient guidance, Hazel fearlessly mastered the basic glides. Her small legs moved with surprising stability. Soon, the three of them glided seamlessly together across the massive rink, their bright laughter echoing off the high, arched ceilings.

A lively, sweeping instrumental piece suddenly flowed from the overhead speakers. Catching the driving rhythm, Vivian finally let her suppressed classical dance background shine through. She moved over the ice with lithe, effortless grace, her body fluid and light. She swirled alluringly and confidently into Preston's strong arms. He caught her with tender precision, supporting both her and Hazel through a breathtaking series of sweeping spins. To the few onlookers scattered in the grandstands, the striking, joyous trio painted an awe-inspiring, picture-perfect image of a happy family.

Meanwhile, by sheer chance, Stella and Declan stepped through the rink's double glass doors for a high-profile date. Stella paused near the entrance, her eyes tracking the elegant, joyful figures gliding across the center of the ice. She clapped her hands lightly together. "Wow, look at that picture-perfect family!"

Declan nodded slowly, struck by the sheer, breathtaking beauty of the scene. The woman in the center spun with a mesmerizing lightness, her movements flawlessly synchronized with the handsome man holding her. Declan watched in silence—until the overhead music abruptly stopped.

The three skaters glided toward the safety of the boards.

Vivian reached up and pulled off her protective helmet. She tossed her long, golden wavy hair back, flashing a brilliant, unrestrained smile. "That was freaking awesome!" she laughed, her face glowing with a raw, undeniable vitality Declan had not seen in a decade.

Seeing her radiant, flushed face, Declan froze in pure shock. He stared at her, his jaw tight. He had never known Vivian could skate, let alone with such profound, radiant grace. In his prejudiced eyes, she had always been a bland, clumsy manipulator. Yet the woman standing on the ice, glowing with fierce joy alongside another man, was a stranger to him. The stark contrast between this liberated woman and the oppressed wife she had been under his roof left him reeling.

Beside her, Hazel eagerly shed her own helmet. Smitten with her fun new friend, and vividly recalling Bianca's advice that her mother would soon find a much better man, the bold little girl looked up. She squealed loudly across the quiet rink, "Preston, why don't you be my daddy?"

Kids often say the darndest, most unpredictable things, but that single, innocent question echoing off the ice hit like a physical blow. Declan’s face turned instantly stone cold. His hands curled into tight, white-knuckled fists at his sides, his nails biting deeply into his palms. The intense, territorial fury rising in his chest was deafening.

Beside him, Stella sharply held her breath. She physically felt the sudden, icy, terrifying tension rapidly radiating from Declan's rigid body. The air around them seemed to drop ten degrees.

Oblivious to the brewing storm on the other side of the rink, Vivian just chuckled at her daughter's impossibly bold remark. "Preston, can you keep a close eye on Hazel for a minute? I need to hit the restroom."

Preston smiled and nodded, taking Hazel's hand to guide her back to the bench.

Vivian turned and headed down the narrow, dimly lit hallway toward the restrooms. She pushed the heavy door open and stepped inside the quiet tiled room, letting out a soft sigh of contentment. The joy of the ice still hummed in her veins.

Then, the heavy wooden door slammed shut with a deafening, echoing bang.

Startled, Vivian quickly whirled around.

Declan’s dark, brooding face loomed just inches behind her, trapping her against the wall. His eyes were sharp, furious, and foreboding.
