A Clean Break
Declan stood rigid on the driveway of Thorne Manor, the morning air doing nothing to temper the heat in his chest. His dark eyes locked onto Vivian's slender figure amidst the cheering crowd. His mind spun, rationalizing the absurd spectacle. This blatant defiance, this theatrical proposal—it was all a desperate act. A choreographed stunt meant to capture his attention.
*She will stop when she embarrasses herself,* he thought, a cold sneer forming on his lips. He adjusted his jacket and slowed his pace, preparing to warn her that these pathetic antics would only lead to trouble.
But Vivian did not glance his way. She turned her back on the kneeling man and walked right past Declan as if he were invisible. She moved straight toward the household staff lingering near the entrance.
"From now on, call me Ms. Vance," Vivian instructed the head butler. Her tone was steady and authoritative, stripping away the meek demeanor she had worn for years.
She turned to a trembling maid and accepted a wrapped bundle of personal items. "I do not need anything else from the room. Dispose of it as you wish."
Ignoring the stunned, dark aura radiating from Declan, she pivoted. She walked back toward the street and slipped into the luxury car alongside the handsome young man.
Once the doors shut and the engine roared to life, Vivian's calm facade dropped. She leveled a stern glare at the young man beside her.
"What were you thinking?" she scolded. "Creating such a grand, humiliating spectacle outside my former home? This has Bianca written all over it."
The young man rubbed the back of his neck with a sheepish grin. "She just wanted to give you a grand exit."
Right on cue, Vivian’s phone buzzed. Bianca’s voice vibrated through the speaker with uncontrollable excitement.
"Did Declan get rattled?" Bianca boasted. "This is just the beginning. I will roll them out one by one, each more impactful than the last. Let him see how popular you are."
Vivian rubbed her temples, letting out an exhausted sigh. She was left speechless by her friend's aggressive protective measures.
Back at Thorne Manor, the atmosphere was thick with disbelief. Gossip swirled like wildfire among the staff. They huddled in the grand hallway, exchanging wide-eyed glances about the shocking sight of the submissive Vivian leaving with another man.
One anxious servant, loyal to the old dynamic, rushed over and dialed Vivian’s number on the landline.
"Mrs. Thorne," the servant pleaded when the call connected. "You need to hurry back and apologize. Mr. Thorne is furious. Please do not let things get out of hand."
Declan stood a few feet away, brooding in the center of the hall.
Vivian's reply through the phone was calm, crisp, and final. "Thank you for your concern. But didn't Mr. Thorne tell you? We have finalized our divorce."
The realization that the quiet Vivian had dumped her billionaire husband sent the servant into deep shock. Her hand trembled so hard she nearly dropped the receiver.
Declan’s patience evaporated. He strode forward, snatching the phone from the servant's shaking hands. He brought the receiver to his ear, only to be hit by the sound of Vivian’s emotionless voice bleeding through the line.
"Tell him not to worry," she said. "After the divorce, he can go his way, and I will go mine. I sent him a bank card. Consider it a gift for his future remarriage."
Before Declan could process the sharp insult, the head butler approached. A delivery person trailed behind him, clutching a small envelope.
The butler handed the package directly to Declan. He tore it open. Inside sat the exact same premium bank card he had tossed at Vivian on the night of their anniversary. The symbolic rejection was crystal clear.
Declan's aura turned dark and volatile. His jaw clenched tight, a storm of pure irritation brewing in his eyes. The terrified courier sensed the impending explosion and fled the manor without daring to ask for a signature.
Across the city, sunlight streamed into Bianca's stylish apartment. Bianca paced the floor, buzzing with thrill over the ultimate insult of the remarriage gift.
"That is brilliant!" Bianca cheered. "Declan's ego must be in pieces right now. Let's arrange the next phase. We need to drive him crazy."
"Do not go overboard," Vivian warned. She reached out, pulling her friend back onto the plush sofa, stepping away from the brink of war. "Returning his bank card was just to clear any remaining debts between us. If you keep this up, he will start thinking I am still hung up on him and trying to get his attention."
Vivian let out a soft breath. "I just hope that one month flies by so I can sever all ties after getting the official divorce decree. No more drama."
Bianca relented, sinking into the cushions. She waved a hand, her mind shifting gears. "Fine. We will lay off the scumbag. Oh, is Peaches coming back soon?"
The mere mention of the nickname acted like a powerful incantation. The cold mask Vivian had worn all morning melted away in an instant. It was replaced by a warm, radiant smile.
"Yes," Vivian nodded. Her eyes sparkled with profound maternal love, softening her features in a way the Thorne household had never witnessed.
The next afternoon, the sun cast a warm glow over the busy streets. Just as the clock struck four, Vivian and Bianca stood outside the towering wrought-iron gates of the elite St. Arthur Kindergarten. Dozens of parents milled about on the sidewalk, waiting for the final bell to ring.
Before long, the heavy double doors swung open. A steady stream of children poured out onto the brick pathway. Amidst the sea of tiny uniforms, a small girl dressed in a delicate princess dress stepped out. Her small shoulders were hunched with a natural timidity, shrinking away from the boisterous energy of the older kids running past her.
She clutched the straps of her backpack, looking around the crowded courtyard. Then, a shy, bright beam shone from her big, innocent eyes as she searched the sea of adults, looking for a familiar face.
