A Heartbreaking Reunion

Hazel’s sneakers hit the concrete before Tristan’s car even came to a halt. She sprinted toward the chaotic crowd of panicking neighbors clustered beneath her apartment building. Following their frantic pointing, she looked up. A sharp, suffocating pain ripped through her chest. Her three-year-old daughter, Daisy, sat directly on the narrow third-floor windowsill, crying loudly for her grandmother and teetering on the edge of a fatal drop.

Blind panic seized Hazel. She shoved past the onlookers, raced into the building, and took the dark stairwell two steps at a time. Bursting through the open apartment door, she sprinted across the cramped living room and snatched the little girl off the sill just in the nick of time.

"Mommy is here," Hazel choked out. She pulled the child against her chest, hugging her tightly as her own body trembled with the fading adrenaline of the near-death experience.

But instead of seeking comfort, Daisy squirmed against her mother's embrace with aggressive force. "I don't want Mom!" the toddler screamed, tears streaking her flushed face. "I want my grandma! Grandma!"

In her hysterical tantrum, Daisy ruthlessly kicked Hazel’s stomach with her hard little shoes. Her legs pumped furiously, mimicking the motion of pedaling a bicycle. A sharp, localized pain flared in Hazel's abdomen. Unable to bear the repeated blows, she had no choice but to loosen her grip and let the frantic child go.

Daisy dropped to the floor and instantly threw a fierce, wailing tantrum on the dirty tiles. She pounded her fists, screaming her lungs out for Brenda.

Feeling hopeless and betrayed by the woman supposed to be watching her child, Hazel pulled out her phone with shaking hands and dialed Brenda’s number.

The line connected. "Brenda, where are you? Daisy was just—"

"Oh, you're back," Brenda interrupted, her tone blunt and dismissive over the sound of shuffling cards. "Take care of the kid. I’m busy playing poker at Martha's house."

Before Hazel could utter another syllable, Brenda hung up. Hazel stared at the dead screen. Brenda usually stayed home to care for Daisy, only venturing out for entertainment when Hazel had a weekend off. This sudden, severe neglect and massive attitude shift made perfect sense. It stemmed directly from Brenda discovering the dark truth: Daisy wasn't her biological granddaughter.

Hazel gritted her teeth. She silently resolved to sell this rundown house and flee with her daughter as soon as possible.

Pushing the grim thought aside, Hazel squatted back down to gently soothe the wailing toddler. "Be good, Daisy. Stop crying," she coaxed, her voice soft. "Grandma will be back soon."

She reached out her hand to carefully pick the girl up from the cold floor. Without warning, Daisy lunged forward. The toddler grabbed Hazel's outstretched hand and bit down ruthlessly with her sharp teeth, sinking them into the delicate bone just below Hazel's thumb.

Hazel cried out in sharp agony, furrowing her brows in deep pain as blood instantly pooled around the bite mark. "Daisy Hayes!" she gasped.

She raised her uninjured hand in a flash of frustrated agony, ready to smack the child's bottom. Yet, her hand remained frozen, suspended in the empty air. Even while bleeding and suffering profound pain, Hazel simply could not bring herself to strike her own child.

Tasting a metallic hint of blood in her mouth, Daisy finally released her vicious grip. The toddler looked up and saw Hazel's raised hand. Immense fear and fresh tears welled up in her big eyes. She scrambled up and bolted toward the open front door.

"Mom is going to beat me!" Daisy screamed in terror, her tiny feet slapping against the floorboards. "Grandma! Grandma, help!"

Hazel instantly chased after her out into the hallway, ignoring the throbbing pain in her hand. "Daisy, you stop right there!"

Fearing her daughter’s short, clumsy legs would cause a terrible tumble down the steep concrete stairs, she desperately called out, "Daisy, slow down!"

But the panicked toddler didn't listen. As Daisy blindly turned the sharp corner of the landing, she stepped straight into the empty void.

Hazel's face paled in paralyzing terror. "Daisy!" she screamed, watching her daughter plummet.

Suddenly, a tall, dark figure darted rapidly up the steps from below. He reached out with lightning speed, snatching the falling girl securely from mid-air.

Seeing her child miraculously saved, Hazel’s legs gave out beneath her. She collapsed heavily onto the cold concrete stairs, gripping the rusty iron railing with white knuckles as she gasped desperately for breath.

Tristan easily and securely cradled Daisy’s tiny, trembling body against his broad chest. Startled by the terrifying near-fall and the sudden rescue, Daisy instantly stopped crying. With her big, watery eyes wide open, she stared up intently at Tristan's handsome, unfamiliar face with a cute, silly expression, and suddenly smiled brightly at him.
