A Priceless Transformation

The spatula clattered against the frying pan as Hazel mechanically plated breakfast for her ungrateful daughter and hostile mother-in-law. Her phone buzzed in her pocket. A text from Tristan: *I've arrived.*

Stepping out into the crisp morning air, Hazel slipped nervously into the passenger seat of Tristan’s sleek car and immediately shrank into herself. Tristan looked exceptionally dignified and powerful in a sharp, tailored suit and a silk tie, his cuffs pinned with unique silver links. Beside him, Hazel felt glaringly out of place in her faded sweatshirt, worn jeans, and scuffed canvas shoes. Years spent rushing through dusty construction sites for stressful engineering projects, raising a demanding toddler, and enduring Bryce’s cruel, relentless taunts about her being an unappealing plain Jane had systematically eroded her confidence. She had simply stopped caring about her reflection.

Without a word, Tristan navigated the car toward the downtown district, pulling up in front of a high-end luxury boutique.

"We're going to see my grandfather later," Tristan informed her refinedly as they stepped inside the gleaming showroom. "You should probably dress up a bit to look the part."

Hazel offered an awkward, hesitant nod.

Catching her apprehension, Tristan's tone softened. "Since we're going to put on a grand show for his family, we have to go all out."

He spared no expense. Under his decisive direction, the staff whisked Hazel away for a head-to-toe makeover. They draped her in elegant designer clothes, strapped her into pristine high heels, and sat her down for professional hair and makeup styling. Tristan topped off the look with a luxury handbag and sparkling jewelry. Standing before the full-length mirror, Hazel stared blankly at her breathtakingly transformed reflection. A stranger looked back—a stunning, radiant woman she hadn't seen in years. But as she marveled at her hidden beauty, a deep, agonizing pang of regret clamped down on her chest. In all their miserable years together, Bryce had never given her a single, meaningful gift.

Back in the comfortable silence of the car, Hazel stared at the stack of expensive receipts she had stubbornly insisted on keeping from the boutique staff. She began mentally tallying the numbers. The luxury items totaled a staggering 10,400 dollars—equivalent to half a year of her grueling salary. Plagued by the crushing burden of her heavy mortgage and draining family expenses, her heart ached violently at the sheer scale of the expenditure. She didn't have anywhere near that kind of money to repay him right now.

Sensing her spiraling panic, Tristan casually plucked the slips of paper straight from her trembling hands. With a crisp motion, he decisively tore the receipts in half and tossed them into the car's small bin.

"Just consider them as my personal gifts," he said kindly. "The receipts are of no use to me, so I might as well throw them away."

Hazel opened her mouth to desperately protest the extravagant charity, but Tristan interrupted her with a firm yet gentle instruction. "Buckle up. I'm about to drive."

Forced to swallow her anxious words, Hazel pulled the seatbelt across her chest, silently vowing to herself that she would definitely pay him back every single cent the moment she successfully sold her house.

Tristan shifted the car into gear. Glancing over at her delicate profile, an intriguing smile touched his lips. "Actually, you're really pretty," he commented softly.

Stunned to her core to finally receive a genuine compliment from a man after so many years of emotional abuse, Hazel felt her chest tighten. She offered a relieved, shy smile. "Thanks," she murmured quietly.

The drive ended at a sprawling private hospital. As they navigated the quiet hallways and finally approached a heavily guarded ward, Tristan suddenly reached out and grabbed her hand tightly. Startled by the abrupt physical contact, Hazel instinctively yanked her hand back to her chest like a frightened rabbit.

Tristan tilted his head, letting out a warm laugh. "We are legally husband and wife now," he gently reminded her. "We need to act like it."

Stammering a flustered apology, she immediately reached back out to willingly grasp his large hand. To her perpetually cold, poor-circulation fingers, his firm grip felt exactly like a warm, comforting little stove.

Holding her tightly to project absolute unity, Tristan confidently led her into the quiet hospital room. "Grandpa, I brought my newlywed wife to see you," he announced cheerfully.

Inside the sterile, quiet ward, a lone middle-aged woman kept watch over a frail, bony old man lying on the bed, breathing through an oxygen mask and tethered to various tubes.
