Stolen Sacrifice
Clara sat rigidly in the back seat of the car, forcing a bitter smile as her gaze locked onto the brightly lit, luxurious facade of Lumina Garden Villa No. 12. Her chest ached viscerally, mourning for her pitiful daughter. The little girl was currently lying alone in the freezing cemetery, having waited all day for a father who never bothered to show up.
She turned to the cemetery caretaker in the driver's seat and gave a curt nod. "Thank you. You can take my car and leave. I'll arrange for someone to pick it up tomorrow."
Dismissing the well-meaning driver, she pushed the car door open and stepped out into the biting night air. The freezing wind slapped her pale face, but her internal resolve suddenly hardened into steel. She acutely reminded herself of her grim prognosis. She was already on her deathbed. With her terminal heart condition ticking away her remaining days, she had nothing left to fear or lose.
"Women may be weak, but mothers are strong," Clara murmured quietly to herself, letting the words solidify her courage. She mentally steeled her posture, straightening her back to face this undeniable betrayal head-on. She would not cower.
She pushed open the heavy wrought-iron courtyard gates and entered the manicured grounds. Almost immediately, a young, sprightly maid intercepted her on the walkway. The girl beamed brightly, her chin raised in a display of practiced authority. "Good evening. The mistress of the house sent me out to greet you," the maid announced proudly.
Clara scoffed inwardly, her jaw tightening. A raw surge of disgust washed over her at the sheer, unadulterated audacity of the situation. A dirty homewrecker was officially claiming domain over property that legally belonged to Clara and her husband. Refusing to be intimidated by a servant's blatant posturing, Clara didn't even dignify the maid with a response. She strode aggressively past her, pushing through the grand double doors and stepping right into the spacious, opulent living room.
The moment she crossed the threshold, Lila's sarcastic, mocking voice rang out loudly from the plush leather sofa.
"Well, look who decided to show up," Lila lazily drawled, crossing her legs. "Have you finally mastered the art of confronting the woman who intruded upon your marriage? Are you here to tear me apart?"
Clara took in Lila's haughty, unashamed demeanor. The woman lounged there wrapped in expensive silk, lacking even a fraction of the guilt a mistress should possess. Clara planted her feet firmly on the polished hardwood floor, maintaining unwavering eye contact. She deliberately aimed her words to strike a painful nerve, hoping to crack that arrogant shell.
"Do you even comprehend the severe social repercussions of shamelessly wrecking a family, Lila?" Clara questioned sharply, her voice carrying through the large room. "You have besmirched the Vance family name. Alongside the illegitimate child you carry, you will soon be treated like a rat scurrying in the streets. You will be despised and pursued by all of society, with nowhere to hide."
This direct attack successfully shattered Lila’s composed facade. She shot up from her seat, her face twisting in sudden rage.
"You bitch!" Lila’s voice pierced the air in a furious shriek, abandoning all pretense of elegance. "Who do you think you are to judge me? If it hadn't been for your constant interference years ago, I would have been legally married to Declan long ago!"
Clara’s eyes hardened with a cold, unforgiving fury. She closed the physical distance between them in a flash, not giving the other woman a chance to react. Reaching out, her hand gripped tightly onto the fabric of Lila’s designer collar, pulling her close and forcing the painful, buried truth of the past out into the open.
"My interference?" Clara demanded loudly, her knuckles turning white from the strain. "Five years ago, I was viciously stabbed and gravely wounded while throwing myself in front of a blade to save Declan's life! You maliciously took advantage of my subsequent medical treatment abroad. You stole my rightful credit, and you manipulated an unconscious Declan into falling in love with you under false pretenses!"
Instead of displaying even a fraction of guilt upon being exposed, Lila merely chuckled disdainfully. She didn't pull away; rather, she leaned in dangerously close to Clara’s face, an ugly smirk dancing on her lips.
"So what?" Lila casually dismissed the heavy accusation. "Who told you to be so foolish? You actually went and erased the defensive scar on your chest purely for aesthetic reasons during your overseas treatment."
Erupting into a wild, unhinged laugh, Lila suddenly stepped back, breaking Clara's hold. She grabbed the front of her own silk shirt and ripped it open. She bared her chest to Clara, revealing a winding, gruesome, heavily textured scar permanently etched into her own flesh.
"Look at my cleverness," Lila gloated, trailing a manicured fingernail over the ugly raised skin. "I deliberately stabbed my own body to create this fake scar. It was a brilliant masterstroke. It made Declan believe without a shadow of a doubt that I was his true savior. Owing to this massive debt of gratitude, he would never dare lay a finger on me. Even if I were to murder you right now, he would protect me."
The sheer magnitude of this psychological manipulation hit Clara like a physical blow. The memory of how she had blindly trusted Lila to care for the unconscious Declan back then surfaced, twisting the knife deep in her heart. It shattered her remaining composure. Rage and fresh, hot tears blurred Clara’s vision as the raw wounds of being so thoroughly used bled anew.
"Karma will find you, Lila," Clara spat viciously, her breathing ragged and heavy.
"Karma?" Lila scoffed at the concept, teetering on the edge of manic laughter. "Don't make me laugh."
Out of the corner of her eye, Lila caught a subtle, prearranged visual signal from the maid standing near the doorway. Instantly, a malicious, calculated smile crept onto Lila's face. Shifting gears without warning, she dropped the frantic laughter. She stepped forward and leaned in intimately once again, lowering her voice to a sinister whisper to deliver her most devastating, soul-crushing blow yet.
"My dear sister," Lila mockingly addressed Clara, her breath tickling Clara's ear. "Do you know exactly how your catastrophic ectopic pregnancy diagnosis came about two years ago? Do you know the true, hidden reason why you had to surgically remove one of your fallopian tubes, effectively ruining your chances of easily conceiving?"
