In the oppressive darkness of the bedroom, Declan’s hand reached out. His warm palm made direct contact with Clara’s forehead. The heavy silence between them magnified the tension, punctuated only by the steady rhythm of their breathing.

"Are you alright?" he asked, his voice low, probing the shadows for answers. "You don't seem like yourself. Are you feeling unwell?"

Clara’s immediate reaction was to recoil. She averted her eyes, staring at the empty space beside the mattress as she pulled her body away from his lingering touch. She needed space, air, anything to escape the suffocating proximity of a man who had just held another woman.

"I'm fine," she murmured hoarsely, using a mundane excuse to mask her emotional devastation. "It's just a headache. A cold, maybe. Let go of me."

Before Declan could formulate a response, a sudden glare sliced through the dark room. His phone screen illuminated the bedside table, casting a harsh white light over the tangled sheets. Clara’s eyes instinctively darted to the screen. She caught a clear, undeniable glimpse of the caller ID flashing in neon hues.

*Lila.*

The intimate nickname acted like a physical blade piercing Clara's chest. The letters burned into her retinas. Her mind drew a sharp, agonizing contrast. She remembered the day she had accidentally seen her own contact name in his phone. He had her formally saved as *Clara Vance*. Nothing more. Just a business partner. An obligation.

Declan’s gaze snapped to the glowing device. "I'll take this and be right back with some medicine for your cold," he promised hastily.

He snatched the phone from the table, not waiting for her reply, and vanished through the glass doors onto the balcony. He slid the glass shut, ensuring his conversation remained strictly private.

When Declan stepped back into the bedroom minutes later, the pretense of fetching her medicine was abandoned. His facial expression was drawn tight, his features set in solemn anxiety. He walked straight to the armchair, retrieving his suit jacket and throwing it on over his shoulders.

"I have to step out for a while," he announced, his tone formal and distant. "I won't be returning home tonight. Get some rest."

A sense of cheapness washed over Clara. She had spent years pursuing his love, bending over backward to be the perfect wife, yet a single phone call from his first love unraveled her existence.

"Is there a problem at work?" she pressed delicately, staring at the rigid line of his back.

Declan purposefully avoided making eye contact. He smoothed his lapels, delivering a practiced, seamless lie. "A rival company snagged a major project. It's causing significant financial losses for the Hawthorne Group. I need to handle it immediately."

Clara looked at the man she had loved for so long. She decided to make one final, desperate attempt to test his loyalty. Bringing a hand to her chest, she forced a deliberate, hacking cough, letting her voice tremble.

"I really don't feel well," she stated explicitly. "Please. Stay home tonight and keep me company."

Declan merely checked his watch. His physical anxiety was undeniable, a restless energy that overrode any scrap of concern for his sick wife.

"The situation is urgent. I have to leave," he insisted with firm, unwavering resolve. "I'll come back tomorrow to be with you."

A choking emotional turmoil rose in Clara’s throat, threatening to suffocate her. She swallowed the pain, forcing a strained smile to her pale lips.

"Forget it," she told him quietly. "Just go."

Declan turned on his heel and departed the room. He walked out the door without casting a single backward glance.

Her physical strength waning, Clara dragged her aching body from the bed. She shuffled across the cold floor to the bedroom window. Standing silently in the dark, she pressed her forehead against the glass and watched the driveway below. The red taillights of Declan’s car flared to life, backing out and speeding down the road until they faded and vanished into the quiet expanse of the night.

With trembling hands, she gently cradled her still-flat belly. A bittersweet, heartbreaking smile graced her lips.

"My sweet baby," she whispered to the darkness, her voice breaking. "I think we will meet your sister in heaven soon."

Hot tears streamed freely down her cheeks. She stood in stark isolation, listening to the metaphorical sound of her own heart shattering in the profound silence of the empty house.

Three grueling days slowly dragged by. Declan remained absent from the villa. When Clara finally managed to get him on the phone, he brushed her off. He maintained the lie during their short, dismissive call, insisting he had traveled overseas for the business emergency and didn't know when he would return.

Clinging to a dangerously fading sliver of hope that he might be telling the truth, Clara made the physical journey to Oakwood Hospital. She needed to know. She needed to see it for herself.

Her arrival only forced her to confront a devastating reality.

Declan was not overseas.

Clara stopped dead in her tracks outside a private VIP ward. Peering through the glass window in the door, she found him. He sat on the edge of the hospital bed in an intimate posture. He was leaning down, pressing his ear gently against Lila’s belly, tenderly listening for the movements of her unborn child. His face held a soft, devoted expression Clara had never received.

The suffocating intensity of her anguish threatened to engulf her physical being. Clara’s breath caught in her throat. The sight of his extreme tenderness toward Lila's pregnancy was a brutal, physical blow.

In an instant, Clara’s mind was yanked backward in time to a memory from exactly two years ago. She vividly remembered her own past pregnancy. She recalled how excitedly and desperately she had invited Declan to listen to their child in the exact same manner, hoping to share the magic of the life growing inside her.

Now, standing frozen in the clinical hospital corridor, she struggled as the haunting echo of his past, cruel response replayed in her mind, casting a dark shadow over her already shattered emotional state, leaving her paralyzed by the past.
