You're Slipping, Darling
**POV: Ronan**
The city blurs past the tinted windows of my vehicle in streaks of neon and steel. My driver weaves through the dense Friday traffic with aggressive precision, but my focus is locked on the impending chaos waiting at my neutral-ground club, Purgatory. It is supposed to be my cleanest operation. High-end clientele, sealed deals, and zero bloodshed. So when Declan labels it a severe situation over the comms, I know the reality on the ground is grim.
We pull up to the back entrance located just off the main strip. An ominous flash of blue and red police lights bounces off the brick walls, confirming the severity of the situation. A crowd of onlookers and uniforms swarm the front perimeter. I step out of the vehicle into the biting night air. My boots hit the asphalt with heavy, calculated purpose. I adjust my cuffs and stride straight for the heavy metal staff door.
Declan meets me at the threshold. His jaw is tight. "Inside is a mess, Boss," he briefs fast, matching my pace as we push through the corridors. "A group flashed rival colors right on the main floor. They claimed they were merely paying customers wanting a drink. Our men pushed back."
I shoot him a cold glance. "No one walks into Purgatory dressed like that unless they are deliberately hunting for trouble."
I push through the double doors and step out onto the main floor. I am instantly engulfed by the thumping bass of the club's sound system. The music pumps a false rhythm into a room that resembles a war zone. Overturned leather booths and splintered tables scatter the floor. Shattered glass from broken liquor bottles catches the strobe lights, crunching loudly under my boots. Terrified dancers stand frozen on their elevated platforms, their arms wrapped around themselves. My security men are barely holding the line against a pack of aggressive intruders. Blood stains the white collar of my lead guard. Another guard hovers his hand over the combat knife strapped to his belt, ready to escalate the violence.
I step directly into the epicenter of the standoff. I do not draw a weapon. I do not need to.
"Enough."
My voice cuts clean and freezing through the heavy music and the shouting. Sudden silence falls over the room in a fraction of a second. Heads snap in my direction. The tension shifts, pivoting from a chaotic brawl to a suffocating stillness.
A heavy-set man stands near the center of the wreckage. Ink crawls up his thick neck and disappears behind his ears. He takes his time acknowledging my presence, glaring at me while rolling his shoulders. He is the leader of the instigators. He evaluates me, testing the waters of my patience.
I nod toward a trembling dancer trapped behind a tipped table. "Apologize to the lady," I demand, keeping my tone flat and even. "And immediately vacate my club."
The leader stares at me. A long heartbeat passes. He hawks a glob of spit and sends it hitting the polished floor near my boots. It is a blatant sign of disrespect. He takes a bold step closer. "I tried to play nice," he taunts, a mocking sneer pulling at his mouth as he gestures to my security guards. "I didn't expect your men to be so soft."
He miscalculated.
I react with blinding speed. I lunge forward, grabbing the thick fabric of his jacket collar. I twist the material and shove him backward with raw, unchecked force. His spine and skull slam into the plaster wall behind him. The impact echoes through the silent room, loud enough to crack the surface of the wall. White dust sprinkles down onto his shoulders. His crew twitches, hands dropping toward their waistbands, but my men draw their weapons in unison. The intruders freeze.
I keep my grip tight on his collar, pinning him against the fractured plaster. I lean in close. I drop my voice to a low, lethal murmur right against his ear. "I do not care what crew you ride with. This is my house. If you ever bleed in this club again, your bones will be sent home in a box for your mother to cry over."
I release my grip. The heavy-set leader drops to his knees, clutching his throat and coughing hard.
"Get them out," I order my crew.
The standoff breaks. My men move forward, shoving the intruders toward the exits. Declan steps up to manage the aftermath, directing the cleanup crews materializing from the back rooms to right the tables and sweep the glass.
I turn my back on the chaos and retreat to the VIP bar on the raised overlook. I need a second to reset my adrenaline. I walk up the short flight of carpeted stairs and approach the dark mahogany wood.
I freeze mid-step.
Resting exactly at my usual spot, perfectly aligned with the edge of the bar, is a neatly folded white napkin. Conspicuously stamped on the outside of the paper is a vibrant red lipstick kiss.
Heat flares in my chest, burning away the lingering irritation from the riot. I step forward and pick up the napkin. I unfold the paper with slow, deliberate fingers. Inside, written in the exact same shade of red, is a message.
*You're slipping, darling.*
My pulse hammers against my ribs. I recognize the color. It is the precise shade she left smeared across a brass bullet casing on my pillow months prior.
She is here.
I frantically scan the chaotic room below. I tuck the napkin into the inner pocket of my coat. She maneuvered through the riot, bypassed my security, and reached my private sanctuary before I did. I know with concrete certainty that she is watching me right now. I sweep my gaze across the massive club again. The bar staff wipes down sticky surfaces. The dancers disappear backstage to recover. The crowd slowly pieces its shattered illusion back together, resetting the atmosphere.
Then, I catch a brief, electrifying flicker of movement near the side exit.
I stop breathing.
Half-hidden by a heavy velvet curtain stands a figure. It is a small, hooded woman dressed in all black. She stands perfectly still in the shadows beneath a flickering exit sign. I have never seen her full figure before. I have only hunted digital ghosts and chased fading scents. But my instincts scream the truth, hitting me with the force of a physical blow.
It is her. My wraith.
She tilts her head up. For a split second, brilliant green eyes burn directly into mine from beneath the dark fabric of her hood. The distance between us vanishes. The noise of the club fades into white static. We lock eyes. The connection is raw, pulling the air straight from my lungs.
She holds my gaze for one more heartbeat. Then, she turns and smoothly slips through the heavy metal exit door like smoke.
"Fuck!"
I swear loudly. I am moving before the word fully leaves my mouth. I shove blindly and aggressively through the dense crowd forming near the bar.
"Boss, wait!" Declan shouts. His panicked voice crackles through my earpiece, demanding an update.
I ignore him. I shoulder past startled patrons, ripping the heavy velvet curtain aside. I hit the metal push-bar of the side exit and burst out into the alleyway.
The freezing night air hits my face. I scan the narrow passage. I check the shadows behind the industrial dumpsters. I look down the brick corridor leading out to the main street.
Empty.
I stand there in the dark alley, my chest heaving. I let the hot, restless fury crawl beneath my skin. She did it again. She lured me in, let me see her, and vanished into thin air. I reach into my coat pocket and pull the napkin out again. I hold it up under the dim yellow light of the streetlamp. I smooth my thumb over the mocking red words written on the paper.
*You're slipping, darling.*
I shake my head, rejecting her taunt. My jaw tightens into a hard line. I am not slipping. I am just getting started.
The undeniable reality sets in, anchoring deep in my bones. She is no longer an abstract idea floating in my head. She is no longer a rumor whispered in the underground or a ghost hacking my security grids. The game has fundamentally changed. She is physically here. She exists in my world, breathing the same cold air, and walking the same concrete streets.
She is finally close enough to touch. I crush the napkin in my fist, staring into the empty dark, fully committed to hunting her down.
