Cast Aside
Vivienne's POV.
The crisp air outside the lawyer's office did nothing to cool the fire burning in my chest. I had walked away from fifty million dollars, the massive company, the estate—everything. I wanted a clean break. I hailed a cab back to the Lancaster Mansion, intending only to grab my clothes and personal items before vanishing from Don's life forever.
But as the wrought-iron gates swung open and I walked up the long driveway, a heavy dread settled deep in my stomach. My heart plummeted at the shocking, degrading sight unfolding before me.
My life was scattered across the manicured front lawn.
Dresses, shoes, and intimate fragments of my past lay haphazardly in the dirt, disrespected and discarded. On the sprawling porch stood Don's mother, Cordelia. She looked down at the mess with a triumphant sneer, acting as a ruthless orchestrator.
"Throw the rest out!" Cordelia barked at the household maids, pointing a manicured finger at the front door. "Toss it all. We need this trash gone."
I stepped forward, my voice shaking with a potent mixture of rising anger and bottomless despair. "Why are you doing this?"
Cordelia whipped her head toward me. Her eyes flashed with pure, unadulterated contempt. She marched down the porch steps, closing the distance between us. Before I could even brace myself for a verbal assault, she swung her arm and slapped me hard across the cheek.
The sharp, stinging impact echoed in the quiet yard. A burning sensation radiated across my skin, matching the sheer malice flashing in her gaze.
"You dare speak to me?" Cordelia sneered, stepping closer. "After the misery you put my son through?"
I forced a bitter chuckle, even as hot tears pricked my eyes. "I stood by Don. I defended him and supported him. You know nothing about what happened between us."
"Take your pathetic belongings and get the hell out," Cordelia spat, her voice dripping with disdain, challenging my right to even stand there. "You are a barren woman. You know nothing but how to squander Don's wealth. He already finalized the divorce, and he is eagerly bringing in someone far superior to replace you."
The venomous insults cut deep into my chest. The pain worsened as I noticed the maids and butlers lingering near the door. Their eyes darted away, filled with uncomfortable pity as they were forced to witness my brutal public humiliation.
"You think you are something special?" she continued to berate me, painting me as a useless parasite. "You are nothing. My son deserves someone who can give him a real family, not a useless drain on his fortune like you."
I stood my ground. My cheek throbbed, and my chest ached, but I summoned an unimaginable strength. I forced a bitter, defiant smile through my welling tears. I refused to let this wicked woman see me break. I had to walk away from this toxic environment with my head held high, not just for my own shattered pride, but for the secret reason I fiercely guarded within.
I bent down, picking up a duffel bag that had been tossed near the rose bushes.
"I am leaving," I announced quietly but firmly, gathering what tiny shreds of dignity I had left. I slung the bag over my shoulder and looked her dead in the eye. "But know this, Cordelia. I loved Don with all my heart. I sacrificed everything for him. One day, he will realize the massive mistake he made today. And when that inevitable day arrives, I hope you can live with your own cruel actions."
Cordelia scoffed, rolling her eyes.
I turned my back on her. I turned my back on years of accumulated bitterness and emotional abuse. I gathered a few more hastily packed bags scattered near the gate and walked out onto the street. The heavy iron gates slammed shut behind me, sealing off my past.
My arms ached from the weight of the bags. I pulled out my phone, desperate for a lifeline. I pulled up my contacts and started dialing people I foolishly believed I could rely on.
"Hi, Sarah," I said when my friend answered. "I need a place to crash for a few days. Can I come over?"
An agonizing, uncomfortable pause followed. "I... I can't help you right now, Vivienne. It is complicated." The line went dead.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and dialed another number. "Mark? Hey, it is Vivienne. I am in a bit of a situation—"
"I heard what happened with Don," Mark cut in, his tone swift and cold. "I do not think it is a good idea for us to talk. Sorry."
Call after call. Rejection after rejection. The chilling reality set in. Don had already gotten to my entire social circle. He spun his own manipulative narrative to ensure that in everyone's eyes, I was the villain of the story. I was isolated.
The sun began to dip below the skyline, casting long, dark shadows across the concrete. I dragged my bags down the block until I spotted a glowing ATM inside a corner convenience store. I needed a simple hotel room for the impending night.
I set my bags down, pulled out my debit card, and slid it into the machine. I tapped the screen to withdraw cash.
The machine beeped. A devastating message flashed across the screen in bold red letters: *Transaction declined.*
A suffocating panic rose in my chest. My hands shook as I grabbed my phone and frantically logged into my banking app. The screen loaded, and the horrifying reality stared back at me.
*Account frozen. Balance: $0.00.*
My breath hitched. Don maliciously stripped me of everything. He had frozen the joint accounts, the credit cards, the emergency funds. I rejected his fifty million, and in return, he cut off the meager savings I had built before our marriage.
I had no money. I had no home.
The cold night fully descended on the city. I stepped back out onto the unforgiving streets. I had no destination. I wandered aimlessly, my arms burning from the weight of my luggage. The wind whipped through my thin coat, biting at my skin. I clutched my bags tighter, keeping my head down as tears spilled over my lashes. I wept in the shadows of the towering buildings.
The streets grew emptier and darker the further I walked. The terrifying silence was broken only by the sound of my own ragged breathing.
Suddenly, a rough, heavy hand grabbed my arm.
"Hey!" I screamed, but before my paralyzed mind could even process the attack, another unseen figure lunged from the alleyway.
A man shoved me hard against the brick wall. My shoulder slammed into the rough surface. He brutally yanked the duffel bag from my grasp. The strap burned against my palm as it was ripped away.
"Stop! Please!" I cried out, terrified.
The second man kicked my legs out from under me. I hit the concrete hard, scraping my knees. He snatched my remaining suitcase, his boots pounding against the pavement as he turned away.
"Help me! Somebody help!" I screamed into the empty, uncaring streets. I reached out, my fingers clawing at the cold air.
My desperate pleas went unanswered. The two mysterious men disappeared swiftly into the pitch-black shadows, running off with the very last of my worldly possessions.
Complete devastation washed over me. I collapsed onto the hard pavement, my knees tucked into my chest. I sobbed, the sound echoing off the brick walls. My entire world had crumbled into dust around me. I was broken.
I shivered in the biting cold, left with nothing but my small purse strapped across my chest. My trembling, freezing hands blindly fumbled inside the leather flap. I pulled out my phone. The screen cast a harsh, pale glow over my bruised hands.
It represented the single, fragile lifeline I had left in the universe.
Through vision blurred by heavy tears, I opened the keypad. I dialed a final, desperate number. I pressed the phone to my ear, listening to the hollow ringing tone. I closed my eyes, praying to whatever forces remained that someone, anyone, would answer the call and offer a tiny spark of hope in this dark, terrifying hour.
