The King's Decision
Selah's POV
My heart pounded with such brutal force against my ribcage that I thought it might shatter bone. Every beat echoed in my ears, drowning out the murmurs of the terrified women lined up beside me. I took a bold step forward, breaking formation, pulling myself out of the line of cowering servants. The heavy, suffocating weight of my murdered best friend's memory pressed tight in my chest. Beside that grief sat the bitter, blood-soaked betrayal of my younger sister. I carried those traumas like a shield. I refused to die in the shadows while my abusers celebrated my demise.
I was changing my fate.
The sudden wave of whispers hit me like physical daggers. Open, mocking disdain rolled off the aristocratic crowd. Hundreds of eyes locked onto my dirt-stained clothes and my defiant stance. The opulent Great Hall, filled with the intoxicating scents of expensive perfumes and rich wines, suddenly felt like an executioner's block. The nobles looked at me as if I were insane. A doomed omega with a death wish stepping into the maw of a monster.
"She has lost her mind," a woman near the front sneered, her voice carrying through the tense air.
"She will not survive the night, let alone the week."
"A mere omega? With the beast king? He will tear her apart before the sun even rises."
I forced my spine straight. I locked my knees to stop their frantic trembling. I raised my chin and directly faced the towering, intimidating figure of the Lycan King, Darius.
"I volunteer… to be your mate," I declared. My voice echoed steadily across the vast hall, betraying none of the terror freezing my veins.
The grand room instantly erupted. Shocked gasps tore through the suffocating atmosphere, followed quickly by cruel, biting laughter. Nobles pointed their jeweled fingers at me. They sneered at my messy hair, my ragged garments, and my impossibly low status. They thrived on this twisted entertainment.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Vespera. Her violet eyes stretched wide in pure disbelief. Her lips parted, unable to form words. The flawless, untouchable mask she always wore cracked right down the middle. Beside her, Zane stared at me like I had sprouted a second head. His confident sneer melted into deep, unsettling confusion.
Then, the Lycan King moved.
Darius raised a single, large hand.
The chaotic room went dead silent. He silenced hundreds of shifting, powerful wolves with one sharp gesture. The silence that followed was terrifying. It pressed heavily against my eardrums, thick with unspoken threats.
His icy blue gaze locked onto mine. The noise of the crowd stripped away, leaving only the dangerous, primal heat radiating from his massive frame. His physical presence commanded the room. He felt like a gravity well, pulling all the oxygen straight out of my lungs.
"Repeat that," his voice cut through the room. Deep. Sharp as forged steel.
I dragged a breath into my burning lungs. I kept my shoulders pinned back, refusing to break eye contact with the apex predator standing at the base of the stairs.
"I volunteer to be your mate," I said again, ensuring my tone remained unwavering.
He studied me. His expression remained a stone fortress, giving nothing away.
"You," Darius murmured. The sound was low, laced with dark curiosity and deep skepticism. "A mere omega, barely able to hold your own against your own pack… How do you expect to stand as a Luna? My Luna?"
My throat felt like sandpaper. I forced the words past the dryness. "I will be better. I will prove myself."
His lips twitched. A ghost of a smirk teased the corner of his mouth. "You will prove yourself? Bold words for someone who can barely lift their own shadow."
A man shifted beside the king. He was tall, leaner than Darius but no less intimidating. Short blond hair framed his sharp brow. Striking gray eyes watched me with intense focus. Unlike Darius’s cold demeanor, this man carried a glint of dry, sarcastic humor. His relaxed stance contrasted with the lethal energy of the king. He leaned close to Darius and murmured something low, words meant only for royal ears.
Darius's mouth quirked before settling back into a hard, unforgiving line. He turned his attention back to me. His intense eyes studied every single inch of my face. His gaze felt heavy, peeling back my defenses layer by layer. His voice sliced through the tense air like a finely sharpened blade.
"Do you have any idea what you are asking for?"
I swallowed hard. "I know what I am doing."
Murmurs started to rise again in the back of the hall. The nobles could not contain their disbelief. I refused to look at them. I refused to look away from the icy stare of the king.
"Why?" Darius asked.
The single word hung in the air, heavy with consequence.
I did not hesitate. I pushed past the fear and let the undeniable, raw truth ring loudly in the silent hall. "Because I have nothing left to lose."
His eyes narrowed. A flash of genuine intrigue sparked in those icy depths. The answer surprised him, cutting through the usual pleas for power or mercy he likely heard from others.
The blond man beside him spoke up, his voice carrying over the hall. "She is wasting your time, Your Majesty. Let her go."
Darius lifted a hand, silencing his companion without a backward glance. "No. I want to hear her."
He stepped forward.
Darius slowly descended the grand stairs. Each heavy footstep echoed like a war drum against the marble floor. Boom. Boom. Boom. My instincts screamed at me to run, to submit, to bare my neck to the approaching Alpha. I dug my nails into my palms until they bled, rooting my feet to the floor. I would not cower.
He stopped just inches away. His massive, imposing form cast a dark, suffocating shadow over my smaller frame. The heat rolling off him felt like a blazing furnace. He smelled of pine, winter storms, and sheer, unfiltered power. Up close, the dark tattoos peeking from his collar looked even more menacing.
He leaned in. His breath brushed the skin of my neck, sending a sharp shiver straight down my spine. A low, rumbling growl vibrated deep in his massive chest.
"This is not a position you can simply claim, little wolf," he warned. "It requires immense strength. A brutal tolerance for pain. An unyielding grasp on power."
"I will find those things," I breathed out, my chest rising and falling rapidly.
"You think you can survive in my world?" he challenged. The ice in his eyes threatened to freeze the blood in my veins. "Do you know how many women have stood where you are standing now? None of them are alive to speak of it."
I did not flinch. I stared directly into that ice, refusing to let him see the terror clawing at my insides.
"I won't end up like them," I stated. My stance remained firm and unwavering.
For a long, heavy moment, Darius just stared at me. The tension pulled so tight I thought the air itself might snap. He searched my face for any sign of deception, any hint of weakness. He found none. I meant every word.
Then, Darius let out a laugh.
It was a cold, humorless sound that rattled my bones. He turned his broad back to me, dismissing the crushing pressure in an instant.
"The meeting is over," he announced to the stunned room. He didn't bother looking back. "Gael, escort her to her room."
Gael. The blond man.
Darius marched toward the grand exit. His broad shoulders vanished into the dark corridor. He made his decision, and the matter was closed. No room for debate.
But Vespera refused to accept it.
"Wait!"
My sister lost her carefully crafted composure. She lunged forward, desperate to stop the king. This sudden disruption ruined her murderous plans. Her violet eyes flashed with unhinged outrage.
"Your Majesty, you do not understand!" Vespera screeched. Her perfectly manicured mask shattered into ugly desperation. She pushed past Zane and pointed a trembling finger at my chest. "She is my servant! How can she be Luna? She is a troublemaker! A murderer!"
The accusation sent a shockwave through the aristocrats. Gasps rang out, echoing off the high ceilings.
My fists clenched at my sides. I bit the inside of my cheek to keep my face blank. I would not give her the satisfaction of seeing my anger. Not here. Not now. Let her scream. Let her unravel in front of the entire court.
"She is worthless!" Vespera continued, her voice pitching higher, cracking with hysteria. She took another step toward the retreating king. "She is nothing! She cannot stand by your side! She killed—"
"Enough."
The single word cracked like a whip.
Darius didn't even bother to turn around and face her. His icy tone instantly froze Vespera mid-sentence. A palpable shiver ripped through the crowd. The sheer authority in his voice made the floorboards tremble beneath our feet.
"You forget yourself, Vespera," Darius commanded, his voice echoing with lethal promise. "I do not explain my decisions."
The resulting silence felt deafening. Vespera stood frozen. Her mouth hung open. She wanted to scream, she wanted to argue, but the king's dominating aura crushed the words right out of her throat. She looked pathetic, stripped of her usual arrogance.
Gael stepped up. The tall, imposing Beta moved with fluid, unhurried, almost predatory steps. He positioned himself between me and the angry crowd, calmly reinforcing the king's orders.
Vespera snapped her attention to Gael. Her chest heaved with homicidal fury. "You cannot seriously be entertaining this, Gael. She is not worth your time. She will bring ruin to this court!"
Gael raised one hand. His tone remained calm, yet carried undeniable steel. "The king gave his orders."
Humiliated and utterly powerless, Vespera had no choice but to back down. Her face flushed a deep, ugly red. Her jaw clenched tight enough to crack teeth. She glared at me. The pure venom in her violet eyes promised a slow, agonizing death.
"This isn't over," she hissed under her breath. The venom dripped from every syllable. "You will regret this, sister."
I did not blink. I did not speak. I just watched her fall apart.
Vespera spun sharply on her heel. Her emerald dress whipped around her legs as she stormed out of the grand hall. Zane scrambled to follow her, casting one last bewildered glance in my direction before disappearing through the heavy oak doors.
The oppressive atmosphere in the room felt instantly lighter the very second she was gone. My lungs finally expanded, pulling in a full breath of air.
Gael crossed the remaining space between us. A glint of deep curiosity danced playfully in his striking gray eyes.
He stopped in front of me and tilted his head.
"Shall we?" Gael asked smoothly. He extended a hand toward the corridor. A dry, sarcastic humor laced his tone. "Your room isn’t going to find itself."
I stared at his extended hand. I hesitated for only a fraction of a second. This man was a stranger, the right hand of a monster. But standing here meant death. Moving forward meant a chance to fight back. My inner resolve locked into place.
I stepped forward.
As I dutifully followed him out of the main hall, the vicious whispers of the aristocratic crowd instantly started up again. They hissed and muttered, trailing behind me like persistent, malicious ghosts. They mocked my clothes, my status, my impending doom.
I forced my chin up. I kept my head high and my back straight. Let them talk.
