The Guilt Plea
Selah's POV
The suffocating silence of the grand courtroom pressed down on my shoulders, carrying the crushing weight of a thousand judging eyes. I knelt on the icy, unforgiving stone floor, my knees bruised and aching from hours of forced submission. The metallic scent of my own blood lingered in my nose, dripping from my busted lip to pool on the polished marble beneath me. My wrists were locked tight in biting, heavy iron chains. The cold metal dug deep into my already torn and bruised skin, grinding against bone every time I drew a ragged breath.
"If you plead guilty, you endure two hundred lashes with a silver whip. Not guilty, you face death."
The judge’s ultimatum echoed against the high vaulted walls, rebounding off the stone to strike me with the force of a physical blow. The crushing finality of his words hung in the stale air. I fought against the bone-deep exhaustion pulling at my limbs and slowly lifted my heavy head. I needed to see them. I surveyed the faces of my pack filling the massive gallery. I searched the crowd, hoping to find a single shred of sympathy, a single pair of eyes that remembered I was family.
Instead, I was met with a terrifying sea of venomous, hateful glares. The pack members sneered, curling their lips in pure, unadulterated disgust. To them, I was merely an omega. I was a pathetic, worthless stain that needed to be scrubbed from their pristine, arrogant bloodline. I was the dirt beneath their boots, and today, they were going to wash me away.
At the head of the room, perched on ornate thrones, sat the rulers of the Crimson Blood pack. Alpha Zane sat rigid, his posture radiating arrogant authority. His sheer alpha aura flooded the room, thick and suffocating, demanding submission from everyone present. Beside him, radiant and unbothered by the blood staining the floor, was Luna Vespera. My own sister.
She wore a flawless gown, her posture impeccable. Vespera’s striking violet eyes looked down upon me with cold, calculated indifference. There was no sisterly bond in her gaze. She looked at me as if I were a stranger who had tracked mud into her pristine castle.
I swallowed the heavy, jagged lump of terror lodging in my throat. I knew the undeniable truth. I had not murdered the council member. I was innocent of the blood they claimed stained my hands. But in this corrupted hall, my innocence was meaningless. The judges had already made up their minds. The pack demanded a sacrifice. Claiming my innocence now meant a swift execution. The blade would fall before the sun set.
I made the agonizing calculation in my head. Death offered a final, silent escape, but the survival instinct burning in my chest refused to let me die for a lie.
"I plead guilty," I whispered into the tense, expectant silence, choosing torturous agony over a beheading.
Loud gasps and vicious cheers erupted from the courtroom. The judge slammed his gavel down, the resounding crack sealing my fate.
Harsh, unyielding hands seized my bare arms. Two massive guards dragged me up from the floor, wrenching my shoulders backward. They hauled me toward the back of the chamber, shoving me against the rough, cold stones of the whipping wall.
They grabbed the chains binding my wrists, hoisting my arms high above my head, and locked the iron into heavy rings embedded in the wall. A guard grabbed the collar of my torn shirt and ripped the fabric straight down my spine. The material fell away in tatters. The biting, freezing air hit my fragile, exposed back, raising goosebumps over my bruised flesh.
A masked torturer stepped into my peripheral vision. He held a thick, braided whip tipped with raw silver barbs. His eyes glittered with sadistic delight through the narrow slits of his leather mask.
"You better count now, darling," he taunted, his voice dripping with cruel malice as he dragged the silver tips across the stone floor, letting the metal spark.
The heavy silver whip cracked through the air.
Searing, unimaginable agony ripped through my flesh as the metal struck my bare back. The silver barbs tore through my skin, chemically burning away my werewolf biology's natural ability to heal. It sizzled on contact, sending a blinding shockwave of pure fire straight into my nervous system. I convulsed against the chains, throwing my head back as I bit my tongue to trap the scream inside my mouth.
"Count!" the torturer roared above my desperate gasp. He yanked the whip back, preparing for another strike. "If you don't count, darling, I am going to start all over again, and it's going to burn."
Fighting through the blinding haze of pain, I forced my raw throat to work.
"One," I gasped out, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the floor.
The whip fell again, slicing open a fresh, bleeding trench right beside the first. The silver venom flooded my veins.
"Two... Three!" I screamed, the sound tearing from my throat as the pain shattered my resolve.
The strikes fell in a relentless, brutal rhythm. Four. Five. Six. I remained trapped in an endless, echoing cycle of torment. The metallic tang of my own blood filled the air, mixing with the sickening scent of burning flesh. Every time the silver bit into me, my wolf cried out in agony, unable to mend the gaping wounds. I pushed through the twenties, my voice breaking into jagged sobs. My knees gave out, leaving me hanging by my chained wrists. The torturer showed no mercy, delivering lash after lash until my battered, bleeding body succumbed to the merciful void of darkness.
Sometime later, I blinked awake in a freezing, lightless dungeon. The cold stone pressed against my cheek. My stomach twisted with severe starvation, cramping so hard it made me gag. My back radiated a ceaseless, burning pain, every severed nerve ending screaming in protest with the slightest shift of my body. Blood had pooled beneath me, sticky and cold.
I tilted my head back, staring up at a tiny slit of moonlight piercing the heavy stones of the ceiling. The silver beam offered the only light in the oppressive darkness. I stared at it, begging the Goddess for freedom, praying for an end to this miserable existence.
Soft, deliberate footsteps broke the damp silence. The sharp clicking of heels echoed down the corridor, growing louder until a figure stopped outside my cell bars.
A beautiful woman draped in an elegant emerald dress stepped into the gloom. Her auburn hair caught the faint moonlight.
"You came," I whispered, my voice sounding like broken glass. A desperate flood of relief washed over my chest at the sight of my sister. I dragged myself upright, the heavy chains rattling against the stone.
"There is no way I could leave my elder sister to burn, right?" Vespera replied.
She stood still, ensuring the dirt of the dungeon did not touch the hem of her dress. Her tone offered no comfort. Her voice was laced with a sharp, chilling defiance.
I gripped the cold iron bars, my hands trembling. "I thought you wouldn't keep your promise."
Vespera let out a dry, condescending laugh. "I always keep my promises, Selah. I gave you a good life. I brought you into the pack house. I provided you with a roof over your head and food in your belly. I gave you a safe position as a maid. You had everything you needed, until you decided to ruin it by killing the council member."
"But I didn't!" I protested, the desperation clawing at my throat. "You know I didn't do it!"
Vespera crossed her arms, her violet eyes narrowing. "The evidence says otherwise."
"He threatened me, Vespera!" I cried out, my fingers turning white around the iron bars. "He cornered me. He told me he was going to desecrate Mama's grave. He threatened to dig up her remains and dangle her bones to the public if I refused his vile sexual demands. He told me to spread my legs. He told me he was going to shove his cock into me whether I wanted it or not."
The memories of his heavy hands grabbing me sent shivers down my spine. "I was in the gardens, picking your flowers. He found me there. He grabbed my hair. He attempted to take me by force, right there in the dirt. I fought back. I scratched his face to get away, I protected myself! I ran, but I swear to you, I did not kill him!"
Vespera’s expression remained stony. She absorbed my trauma without a single flinch.
"He was found dead in the gardens," she stated, her voice heavy with accusation. "His head was bleeding, and there were silver splinters driven straight through his heart. Splinters matching the exact weapons the guards found planted beneath the floorboards in your room."
Her words hit me like a physical blow. The air rushed out of my lungs. I shook my head in sheer disbelief.
"I don't know where those weapons came from," I pleaded, tears spilling hot and fast down my dirty cheeks. "I have no idea who put them there. I am innocent!"
Vespera groaned. Her mask of sisterly patience slipped away, revealing a boiling, ugly resentment beneath. She stepped right up to the bars, her face twisting with rage.
"Are you going to stand there and act innocent?" she sneered, her voice dropping to a harsh hiss. "You have been troubled since the day Papa allowed me to marry the Alpha. You hated your sorry life at home. I wanted to grant you freedom, I brought you here, and you tried to steal my husband."
The accusation struck me with blinding force. It felt like another strike from the silver whip. The sheer weight of Vespera’s misplaced hatred crushed the last fragile embers of hope I had clinging to my heart.
"Steal your husband?" I gasped out.
"Don't lie to me, Selah! I saw how you looked at Zane. I know what you wanted to do!"
Bitterness surged in my throat, choking out my tears. I pushed myself up against the bars, my blood boiling. I had taken the beatings. I had taken the blame. But I would not let her rewrite the reality of our cursed existence.
"So you blame me for something that was out of my control?" I protested, the injustice of my fate burning my tongue. I locked eyes with her, letting the brutal truth shatter the space between us. "Is it my fault the goddess gave me your husband as my mate?"
