Ousted From The Family
The rhythmic hiss of the oxygen machine cut through the oppressive silence of the VIP hospital ward, acting as a grim metronome for the Stanton family's fading fortunes. Winston Stanton lay flat on his adjustable bed, looking smaller and frailer than he ever had. A clear plastic tube hooked beneath his nose, delivering steady puffs of air into his weakened lungs. The sterile scent of antiseptic hung heavy in the room, but it did nothing to mask the stench of desperation. Despite the quiet surroundings, a deep, gnawing worry consumed the patriarch’s mind. The Stanton family teetered on the jagged brink of a catastrophic financial crisis, a threat far more lethal to his legacy than his current physical ailments.
Victor stepped out of the room’s shadows, his sharp eyes recognizing the perfect, vulnerable opportunity. He smoothed his features, masterfully arranging his face into a mask of deep, filial distress. He slowly approached the cold metal railing of the bed, leaning in close.
"Dad," Victor began, his voice heavy with manufactured sorrow. "Gareth's family has caused us incredibly huge trouble this time. Elena brazenly canceled her engagement to Jaxon. She publicly smeared the Blakely family's untouchable reputation in front of all of Bancroft."
Victor paused, letting the heavy weight of the rival family’s name hang in the chilled air. "Three of our biggest clients aggressively terminated our cooperation this morning alone. The fallout is immense. The markets are already reacting. We must ruthlessly remedy this immediately, or the corporation will bleed out."
Derek stood near the frosted glass window, his arms crossed tightly over his chest. He secretly detested his older brother's blatant opportunism, seeing right through the theatrical performance. Yet, the Stanton family’s dire, rapidly sinking predicament forced his hand. The financial bleeding was undeniably real, and the sharks were circling. Derek kept his mouth shut, reluctantly offering his silent agreement to whatever purge Victor was planning.
A heavy, rattling sigh escaped Winston’s pale lips. It sounded like defeat, the sound of a man watching his empire crumble. He closed his tired eyes, shutting out the glaring fluorescent ceiling lights. "What do we do, then?" he asked hoarsely.
Taking the meticulously orchestrated cue, Victor’s son, Colin, quickly stepped forward. A smug, predatory glint danced in his eyes.
"Grandpa," Colin said, his tone ringing with arrogant confidence. "They ruined our long-standing reputation. And for what? Elena stubbornly decided to marry a useless, abandoned man. We should chase them out of the Stanton family. Banish them."
Colin stepped closer to the foot of the bed, his voice dropping to a serious cadence. "This way, we officially cut all legal and blood ties. Once we make the exile public, the furious Blakelys will no longer blame our corporation for her reckless actions. We offer Gareth's family up as the sacrifice."
Winston slowly opened his eyes and shifted his weary gaze to his youngest son. He sought Derek’s opinion, hoping for an alternative that wouldn't require severing his own blood.
Derek met his father’s stare. He swallowed hard and gave a stiff, silent nod. There was no other viable way out.
With his two eldest sons united against Gareth, Winston finally conceded to the cruel reality. The survival of his life's work far outweighed his love for his disappointing middle son.
"Do it," Winston finalized the harsh exile. His voice lacked any trace of warmth. He gestured toward a thick leather folder resting on the metal bedside table. "Colin, take that. Elena’s upcoming business contract. The one backed by Dexter Rowley, the Underground King. It’s highly lucrative. Handle it well."
Colin grinned widely, eagerly snatching the folder off the metal surface. Victor’s ambitious family exchanged triumphant glances, quietly rejoicing over their total victory. They had finally ousted their rivals and secured the crown jewel of the company's future.
Derek clenched his jaw. Realization hit him like a physical blow to the ribs. Winston had just placed the family’s entire financial future exclusively into Victor’s grasping faction. Feeling sick to his stomach, Derek spun around and stormed out of the ward in a sour mood, the heavy wooden door slamming shut behind him.
Left completely alone in the quiet room, Winston gripped the edge of his thin blanket. He steeled his fragile resolve. He simply couldn't let his legacy crumble into dust over Gareth's foolish family.
Out in the glaring hospital corridor, Victor wasted absolutely no time executing the order. He pulled out his phone, his thumb flying across the screen. He immediately froze all of Gareth's corporate assets and locked their bank accounts. Then, he dialed the estate. He ruthlessly ordered the stern head butler to purge Gareth’s family belongings from the premises.
Across town, headlights swept across the manicured lawns of the lavish Stanton residence. Elena hit the brakes, her tires screeching against the smooth pavement as she finally caught up to her speeding parents. She threw her car door open and rushed toward the towering iron main gates.
Miriam paced frantically on the driveway, her face pale in the moonlight. When she spotted Elena running toward her, her anxiety spiked into outright panic. She marched forward and grabbed her daughter’s arm, her grip tight.
"What are you doing running around the driveway like that?" Miriam loudly chastised, her voice shrill with dread over the supposed high-risk pregnancy. "You need to be careful! Stop being so reckless!"
Elena let out an exasperated breath. She opened her mouth, ready to clear the air and clearly explain that she wasn't pregnant at all, that it was all a massive, spiraling misunderstanding.
Before a single syllable left her lips, the massive oak doors of the main house groaned open. The heavy sound echoed through the quiet night, freezing all three of them in their tracks.
The head butler stepped onto the grand marble porch. Several sneering housekeepers flanked him, their arms loaded with familiar leather bags, coats, and boxes. Without a word of hesitation, they rudely and forcefully dumped the expensive suitcases directly onto the dirty street. The luggage hit the asphalt with a sickening thud. Designer clothes spilled out, landing in the dust.
"Hey! What do you think you're doing?" Miriam yelled, her maternal panic instantly transforming into fierce outrage.
The head butler adjusted his tailored suit jacket, glaring down at them from the top of the marble steps with undisguised contempt. "Mr. Victor officially informed us that you've been kicked out by Old Mr. Stanton," he announced haughtily.
He descended the steps, his polished shoes clicking sharply against the stone. He stopped right in front of Gareth, holding out an expectant hand. "Hand them over. The family-issued car keys. You are no longer permitted to use Stanton Corporation property."
Gareth stared at the butler, his face draining of color. The reality of his father's swift betrayal crushed the breath from his lungs. Numbly, he reached into his pocket and dropped the heavy keyring into the butler's waiting palm.
The butler sneered, pocketing the keys. He signaled the housekeepers. They retreated inside the grand house. The butler followed, pulling the massive oak doors shut behind him. A second later, the electronic lock on the towering iron main gates buzzed. The heavy metal gates slid shut with a definitive, ringing clang, decisively locking the family out into the cold night.
Furious at the immense, public humiliation, Miriam stomped her foot against the asphalt. Her chest heaved. She immediately turned on her heel, determined to march down the street, hail a cab, and storm the hospital to demand answers from Winston himself.
Gareth lunged forward. He grabbed her wrist, holding her back tightly. His hands trembled violently against her skin, betraying the sheer terror gripping his heart.
"Let go of me!" Miriam shrieked, struggling against his grip.
"You can't go there," Gareth pleaded, his voice thin and raspy. He intimately knew his father's unyielding, stone-cold nature. Seeking the patriarch out right now would only invite far more vicious mockery from his cold-hearted, victorious brothers. It was a suicide mission for whatever shred of dignity they had left.
Miriam yanked her arm free. She stared at her husband, taking in his hunched shoulders and his trembling hands. The devastating disappointment hit her like a physical blow.
"Those two incredibly cruel brothers of yours are openly bullying you in broad daylight!" Miriam screamed, her voice cracking under the weight of her despair. "They throw our lives into the gutter, and you're still just standing here taking it in?"
She pointed a shaking finger at the towering iron gates. "Why did I ever foolishly fall in love with such a pathetic, worthless person like you? I want a divorce right now!"
The word 'divorce' hung in the night air, sharp and suffocating. Pushed to his absolute psychological limit by the sudden betrayal of his family and the relentless screaming of his wife, Gareth finally exploded. Decades of bitter, pent-up rage shattered his usual meek demeanor.
"What else can I possibly do but endure?" Gareth roared, the veins bulging in his neck. He stepped closer, his face twisted in raw fury. "I have absolutely no standing in this family! Do you want to know why? Because you couldn't give birth to a boy! The only reason my brothers are endlessly tormenting me, the only reason my father treats me like dirt, is all because of you!"
Miriam gasped, stumbling back as if he had struck her across the face. Her eyes widened in shock at the venom in his words.
Watching her beloved parents violently and tearfully turn on each other in the middle of the dark street, immense remorse pierced Elena's heart like a jagged blade. The sight of their tears and their shattered pride was entirely her fault.
"Dad, Mom, please stop fighting," Elena begged, stepping between them. Her voice trembled. "It's all my fault."
She looked at the scattered luggage, then back at their tear-stained faces. "My stubbornness dragged you both into this massive mess. I did this. I'll fix it."
Tears unwittingly streamed down her pale cheeks, burning hot against her cold skin. "I'll go apologize to Mr. Blakely right now. I'll make this right."
Elena didn't wait for their response. She turned on her heel, leaving her broken parents behind on the curb, and sprinted down the road toward the distant glow of a taxi stand, leaving for the formidable Blakely residence.
