I was standing in the presence of Silas’s mother. Martha Vance.

She stared at me with such dismay that I stood there with unease bubbling in my belly. Cora stood beside her with her arms folded across her chest and a smug smile on her lips. The last thing I wanted right now was to have this altercation with them, especially while I was out to dinner with my family, in celebration of my
