Things were awkward, to say the least.

Winston didn’t bother answering her question; I think he was too stunned to even speak. He wasn’t prepared for Meg to ask that, and he wasn’t prepared to make that kind of decision. Despite her trying to keep the pain out of her eyes and voice, it was still there. It was clear to me, and it was probably clear to Winston as well.
