Used Goods
Torin reached the grand iron gates of the Hayes residence, expecting a clean exit, only to find his path abruptly walled off. A long line of decorated luxury vehicles idled in the driveway, their engines purring in unison to form an impassable barricade. The doors of the lead car, adorned with elaborate silk ribbons, swung open. Declan Thorne stepped out onto the paved courtyard. Clad in a tailored designer suit and clutching a pristine arrangement of fresh roses, the wealthy heir looked every bit the arrogant groom.
Declan paused mid-step. His gaze locked onto Torin standing near the gates. For a split second, Declan looked stunned. Then, a boisterous, mocking guffaw erupted from the groom's chest, echoing over the idling car engines.
"Well, would you look at this!" Declan crowed, pointing a polished finger at Torin. "I almost forgot today was the exact day you were scheduled to be released from prison. What a fantastic coincidence. Care to attend my wedding with Chloe?"
Malicious mischief danced in Declan’s eyes as he looked Torin up and down. Torin met the mockery with a silent, icy stare. He shifted his weight, intending to bypass the convoy and walk away. He had no desire to waste his time speaking to a man like Declan.
"Hold on now, do not run off!" Declan side-stepped, blocking Torin's path. He feigned a polite, sympathetic smile. "Is it because you cannot afford a gift? Do not worry, you do not need to prepare a wedding gift for us. In fact, you can come and feast on the discarded leftovers from our lavish banquet. We booked the Prestige Hotel for the reception. If you pass this up, a broke ex-con like you might never get the opportunity to eat in a place like that."
Smiling with patronizing contempt, Declan reached his hand out, aiming a mocking pat at Torin’s cheek.
*Smack.*
Torin slapped the outstretched hand away with brutal force. The sharp sound cracked through the morning air, freezing the grins on the faces of Declan's nearby entourage.
Torin curled his lip into a razor-sharp sneer. "You idiot. What is so great about marrying someone else's used goods? You are the one feasting on my leftovers."
Internally, Torin knew the stark truth of his past relationship. He had always respected Chloe's boundaries. During their time together, he had never even held her hand in an intimate manner. Yet, he knew this barbed lie was the perfect weapon. It was an instant psychological strike meant to exact immediate revenge and shatter their arrogant parade.
The calculated words hit their mark. The color drained from Chloe's face. She stood frozen on the porch, sheer panic seizing her features as Declan's head snapped in her direction.
"Torin, what filthy lies are you spewing?" Chloe thundered, her cheeks flushing with frantic rage. She stomped forward, her wedding gown rustling loudly. "How dare you call me that! I would never let a dirty convict like you hold my hand, let alone touch me!"
Standing nearby, Sylvia mirrored her daughter’s panic. The older woman lunged forward, her hands shaking as she grabbed her future son-in-law’s arm.
"Declan, please, do not listen to a single word he says!" Sylvia pleaded, frantic to protect her hard-won ticket to high society. "He is just acting out of bitter spite and extreme jealousy. My daughter would never let a man like him lay a finger on her!"
Declan’s face darkened with humiliation, the muscles in his jaw twitching. Despite the toxic seed of doubt planted in his mind, his bruised ego demanded he maintain his pride. He lifted his chin and glared at Torin. "Do not worry, Mrs. Hayes. I do not believe a single word of his pathetic insult."
Declan took a threatening step toward Torin. "You better keep your filthy mouth shut," the groom warned. "If I find you spreading rumors about my wife, I promise you will suffer painful regrets."
Unfazed by the wealthy heir's aggressive threats, Torin stood his ground. He met Declan's furious glare with a terrifying, icy resolve.
"My mouth belongs to me. I will say whatever I please," Torin countered, his voice carrying a dangerous, lethal edge. "In fact, you are the one who needs to watch his back. When the inevitable day comes that you lose your miserable life, you will not even know what hits you."
The sheer intensity of Torin’s piercing death stare struck Declan hard. An uncontrollable shiver cascaded down the groom’s spine. The sudden, freezing intent in Torin's eyes felt far too real, making Declan realize he was standing far too close to a predator.
Shaken but unwilling to lose face in front of his massive entourage, Declan forced a blustering scoff to mask his creeping unease. "Try it, if you are not afraid of death," Declan spat, throwing a threat to cover his nerves. "When the time comes, you will be on your knees begging me for mercy!"
With a sharp pivot on his heel, Declan turned his back. He gripped his bouquet tighter and marched quickly toward the Hayes house, signaling his men to follow and ignore the broke bastard.
Torin stood in silence, his eyes narrowing as he tracked Declan’s retreating silhouette. Gathering his internal breath, Torin raised his hand. With a subtle, almost imperceptible flick of his finger, he covertly shot a concentrated ray of internal light straight through the air. The invisible energy slammed directly into the groom's body.
Declan jolted for a split second, his stride breaking as the energy pierced his tissue. Unaware of the lethal sabotage taking root inside his meridians, the groom simply shook his shoulders to dispel the sudden chill and kept walking toward the door.
A dark, satisfied smirk formed on Torin's face. He thought to himself that he would wait to see if Declan would eventually fall to his knees and beg for mercy once the hidden damage flared up. Turning his back on the wedding party, Torin set his sights firmly on the Prestige Hotel and walked down the street.
Miles away, the opulent entrance of the Prestige Hotel buzzed with morning activity. Robert Mercer paced back and forth across the polished marble courtyard. Agonizing anxiety etched deep lines into his aging face. He ignored the curious whispers of the gathered crowd standing near the grand glass doors.
"Is that Mr. Mercer?" a bystander muttered, watching the wealthy man pace. "It is a surprise to see him waiting out here."
"I heard the Thorne family is hosting their eldest son's wedding banquet here today," another whispered. "Do you think a prominent figure like him is standing there to greet the Thorne family’s approaching wedding party?"
"Maybe. The Thornes are an influential family too. He ought to show them some respect."
Robert tuned out their speculations. He stopped pacing just long enough to check his expensive luxury watch. His expression tightened with desperation. Time was slipping away, and the young man from the park had not yet arrived.
Genevieve stood right beside him, her face pulled into a relentless frown. She pleaded with him in a hushed, frantic tone, trying to pull him toward the lobby doors.
"Dad, please, let us just go inside and leave," Genevieve argued. "I believe that scrawny young man was just bullshitting us. All his grand talk about a mysterious injured left lung is nothing but crap. You only have lung inflammation from the flu."
Robert let out a heavy sigh but did not move from his spot.
"Stop waiting for a con artist to show up!" Genevieve insisted, refusing to drop the issue. "Let me take you to a proper hospital. I already made an urgent call to Dr. Finch. The renowned medical expert will be arriving at the hotel very shortly. He can give you real treatment."
Robert stopped pacing. He turned to face his daughter, shaking his head at her ignorance. His shoulders slumped beneath his tailored suit.
"Genevieve, there are deep, dark secrets you are unaware of," Robert told her. His voice hung heavy with exhaustion. "The advanced doctors and modern machines at the hospital have no way of detecting or treating the mysterious injury festering on my left lung."
Genevieve froze, her eyes widening in disbelief as she stared at her father.
"This hidden, deteriorating ailment has plagued me for over twenty agonizing years," Robert confessed, laying the terrifying truth bare. "It is a secret I have kept hidden from everyone. I kept quiet to spare you from living in constant worry."
Stupefied by this massive revelation, Genevieve felt a rising panic consume her chest. Since she was a little girl, Robert had raised her alone. They were everything to each other. The thought of a hidden disease threatening his life terrified her beyond words. She reached out and grasped his cold, trembling hand.
"Dad, what is going on?" Genevieve begged, her voice cracking with fear. "Please do not scare me with such morbid talk. What do you mean twenty years?"
Robert squeezed her fingers. He let his heavy words fall into the silence between them. He did not have the energy or the time to explain the long, brutal history behind his rotting lung. He could only hope the young man would keep his promise.
Checking his watch once more, Robert looked out far ahead, anxiously waiting for his only hope to arrive.
