The hospital room was bathed in the soft glow of dawn when I opened my eyes. The pain medication had worn off during the night, leaving my ribs aching with each shallow breath. The steady beep of the heart monitor created a rhythmic backdrop to the quiet room.

Maya was curled up on the small folding bed beside me, her normally perfect hair disheveled, dark circles under her eyes. She'
