Shattered Illusions

Sienna's POV

The name on the kindergarten report card burned into my retinas, searing itself into my brain. *Leo Mercer.* My legs carried me out of the study and down the carpeted hall, propelled by a primal, blinding fury I didn’t know I possessed. I burst into our shared bedroom. No, *Tristan's* bedroom. The carefully curated life we had built over the last five years suddenly felt like a suffocating stage set, a massive illusion, and I needed to tear it down.

I ripped the pristine duvet off the mattress, sending pillows flying against the wall. My frantic hands tore through his closet and his dresser, tossing designer shirts and expensive ties across the hardwood floor. My chest heaved, my breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps as I dropped to my knees beside his mahogany nightstand. I yanked the bottom drawer out entirely, dumping its contents onto the rug.

My fingers grazed the interior wood. There was a hollow sound. A false bottom. My nails dug into the wooden panel, ingeniously built into the furniture, and I pried it up with a sharp crack.

Inside lay a stash of glossy photographs.

I snatched them up. My stomach violently rebelled. The images were intimately explicit, capturing Tristan and Valerie in tangled, sweaty sheets. His mouth was on her neck, his body pressing into hers with a raw, unbridled passion he had never shown me. The camera captured every graphic, horrifying detail of their physical connection. They were raw. Real. Beneath the horrifying photos rested an intricate, heavy platinum bracelet. I recognized the ancient symbols etched into the metal. It was a mating bracelet, a sacred testament of eternal wolf devotion. It was the ultimate promise, and he had given it to her.

Beside it sat a plush velvet box.

My trembling fingers pried the lid open. A massive, extravagant diamond ring mocked me under the bedroom lights. It was heavy, flawless, and vastly superior to the modest engagement ring currently weighing down my left hand. Tucked into the silk lining was a small, handwritten card.

*[To my true love. Always yours, T.]*

The elegant script shattered my remaining reality. The breath violently left my lungs. Five years. I stared at the ring, the explicit photos, the ancient bracelet. The devastation threatened to swallow me whole, a massive black hole opening in the center of my chest.

Then, the sharp metallic click of a key turning in the front door lock echoed through the silent apartment.

My head snapped up. I froze instantly, my human heart hammering a frantic, deafening rhythm against my ribs. Heavy footsteps sounded in the entryway. Tristan’s deep, familiar voice drifted down the hallway, intertwined with a sound that made my skin crawl.

"...could have just gone straight to my place," Valerie said. Her soft, intimate laughter floated through the air. Her tone was vastly different from the polite, supportive bridesmaid I knew. It was playful, dripping with shared secrets.

"I want to shower first," Tristan replied, his voice laced with casual affection. "I smell like the gym, and you know how sensitive your werewolf nose is."

The hardwood floor seemed to dissolve beneath my knees. Footsteps approached the bedroom. The door swung open.

They walked in arm-in-arm, Valerie pressing her body against his side.

They stopped dead, completely unprepared for the scene before them.

The air evaporated from the room. Tristan’s arrogant, confident demeanor vanished in a heartbeat. The future Delta of the Obsidian Moon Pack turned the color of ash. He stared at the torn-apart room, the shattered false drawer, and me sitting on the floor clutching the velvet box and the naked photos of his secret life. Tears streaked down my face, hot and agonizing.

"Sienna?" Tristan stammmered. His broad shoulders slumped. He looked incredibly small, shrinking into a caught schoolboy fumbling for a fabricated excuse. "What... what are you doing?"

Valerie recovered with terrifying speed. Her arm detached from Tristan's waist, and a smug, victorious smile stretched across her perfectly contoured face. Her irises shifted, flashing a brilliant, predatory gold. The wolf beneath her human skin surged forward, reveling in the carnage.

"Well," Valerie declared callously, brushing a lock of platinum blonde hair over her shoulder. She showed zero guilt. "I guess the cat's out of the bag."

I choked on a sob, my knuckles turning white around the photographs.

"Honestly, I've been tired of hiding for years," she continued, her golden eyes locking onto mine with malicious glee. "Though I didn't expect the big reveal to happen the night before the wedding."

"Five years," my voice trembled violently. I scrambled to my feet, the photographs scattering across the rug. "I dedicated five years of my life to this relationship. To us. And you've been doing this with my bridesmaid?"

Tristan took a hesitant step forward, his eyes darting to the evidence on the floor. "Sienna, listen to me—"

"Listen to what?" I screamed, the burning rage finally overtaking my agonizing tears. "Explain the photos? Explain the mating bracelet? Explain Leo?"

Valerie’s smug smile widened into a cruel, knowing grin. With cruel satisfaction, she stepped forward, relishing the kill. "Oh, you found out about our son. Yes, Leo is already six years old."

The words hit me like a physical blow to the stomach. Six.

"Tristan and I were sleeping together long before he ever met you," Valerie revealed, her voice dripping with venomous pride. "Long before he ever set foot in that coffee shop to play human."

The puzzle pieces slammed together with sickening clarity. The sacred full moon nights. Tristan leaving the apartment, claiming he had strict, ancient pack rituals to attend. He told me humans were forbidden from witnessing the moon ceremonies. He told me it was an agonizing duty.

He was a liar. He had been spending those nights building a secret family. With her.

"So these five years have all been lies?" I demanded, my chest heaving. I glared at Tristan, searching his face for any shred of the man I loved. There was nothing. "Every full moon. Every late night pack meeting. Was it all just a fabrication? Did you just use me to secure your precious Delta position?"

Tristan straightened his spine. The stammering schoolboy disappeared, replaced by the calculating wolf. He took another step toward me, adopting a sickeningly patronizing tone.

"Sienna, lower your voice," he instructed smoothly. "You need to understand how pack politics work. You are my destined mate. Having a human destined mate is politically necessary for my ascension in the pack. The elders demand stability. But your role as my wife doesn't exclude my other needs."

My jaw dropped. The sheer audacity of his words paralyzed me. "Your needs?"

Valerie chimed in from the sidelines. The sound grated against my ears. "You're nothing more than a political ticket, Sienna. A mere pawn to impress the Alpha. Tristan needs a destined mate on paper to claim the Delta title."

She walked over to Tristan, running a possessive hand down his chest. He didn't stop her.

"But he truly loves me," Valerie boasted, her golden eyes burning into mine. "I am his true mate in every way that matters. And our son, Leo, is his one and true heir. You're just a prop for the ceremony tomorrow."

"A prop," I repeated, the word tasting like ash in my mouth. My sorrow burned away, leaving behind a scorching, defiant empowerment. I looked at the man I had worshipped. He was a monster in a tailored suit. "I'm not marrying you. The wedding is off."

Tristan’s face darkened. His amber eyes flickered, bleeding into a terrifying, luminous gold. Enraged by my defiance, he closed the distance between us before I could blink.

He grabbed my wrist. His terrifying, inhuman strength clamped down on my bones like a steel vice. I gasped, struggling to pull away, but he was an immovable stone wall.

"Let go of me!" I shouted.

I watched in horror as his fingernails lengthened. The keratin thickened, elongating into sharp, curved claws. The tips pricked my delicate skin. A sharp sting flared on my wrist, followed by the warm trickle of small blood beads rolling down my arm.

"The wedding is tomorrow," Tristan commanded. His voice dropped an octave, vibrating with raw Alpha authority that rattled my teeth. "You cannot refuse the mate bond. It is crucial for my position as Delta. This marriage will secure generations of status for my bloodline, and you will play your part."

"You two deserve each other!" I screamed. I thrashed against his grip, the pain in my wrist fueling my adrenaline.

Channeling all my remaining strength, I twisted my arm and fiercely yanked it free from his punishing grip. His claws tore thin, burning scratches across my skin, but I didn't care.

I ripped the modest engagement ring off my left ring finger. The metal scraped my knuckle. I pulled my arm back and hurled the diamond straight at Tristan's face.

The heavy metal struck him square in the cheekbone. He flinched, his hand flying to the red mark blossoming on his skin.

"Take it!" I roared, my voice echoing off the bedroom walls. "I refuse to be your mate! I refuse to participate in your marking ceremony!"

Tristan bared his teeth. A deep, guttural growl ripped from his chest. "You don't know what you are doing, Sienna! You cannot walk away from this! This is about Pack hierarchy! It is about duty and unbreakable tradition!"

Valerie stepped confidently between us, shielding Tristan. She looked down her nose at me. Her posture radiated arrogance.

"You should be on your knees thanking us," Valerie said condescendingly, crossing her arms over her chest. "You should be incredibly grateful. Do you have any idea how much immense wealth and elite status comes with being mated to a future Delta? You get to live in luxury, while Tristan and I handle the real pack business. You get the title. Stop acting like a spoiled brat and accept your place."

Something deep inside me finally snapped.

The leash holding back my heartbreak and fury disintegrated. I didn't care about their werewolf strength. I didn't care about the Pack. I didn't care about the consequences.

I raised my hand. I swung my arm with every bit of agonizing betrayal in my system.

My palm cracked against Valerie's smug, perfectly made-up face.

I slapped her as hard as I physically could.

The sharp, echoing crack of the impact silenced the room.

"I am not your stepping stone!" I shouted, my chest heaving.

The bedroom fell into a deadly, suffocating silence. The air grew heavy, thick with a lethal tension that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. My hand stung from the force of the blow.

Valerie's head was turned to the side. She stood frozen.

Then, she slowly straightened up.

She turned her head back toward me.

Her beautiful face began to terrifyingly transform. The bones beneath her skin shifted and cracked. Her human jaw elongating with a sickening, wet crunch, pushing outward into a snout. Her lips pulled back, revealing teeth that sharpened into lethal fangs no human mouth could possibly contain. Coarse fur erupted along her cheekbones.

Her golden eyes narrowed into deadly, predatory slits. A low, blood-chilling growl rumbled from deep within her throat, vibrating through the floorboards and up into my legs. The sheer terror of the apex predator locked onto its prey froze the blood in my veins.

"You stupid, pathetic human," Valerie snarled.

Her voice was heavily distorted, a demonic, guttural rasp tearing through her partially shifted, monstrous form. Drool dripped from her lethal fangs, landing on the hardwood floor.

"No one strikes a werewolf and lives to tell about it."
