The Burning Bond
Tessa's POV
Everything stopped. The music, the chanting, the very air in my lungs just ceased to exist. My icy fingers dug into the heavy curtain fabric, crumpling the material in my tight grip. Down in the courtyard, Kaelen stared up at me. Red bled through his dark irises, glowing bright and lethal under the pale moonlight. The wolf inside him surged forward, pushing past the human facade, answering a silent call I had no right to hear.
My knees shook. A heavy tremor traveled up my spine, settling deep in my bones.
This was a mistake. I possessed no wolf. My soul was barren, my lineage flawed. I was a broken thing destined to scrub floors and endure sneers. Yet the undeniable truth rooted itself deep inside my marrow, striking like a physical blow to the chest. He claimed me. The universe bound our souls together in the span of a single heartbeat, tying a powerful Alpha to a worthless Omega.
Before I could process the sheer gravity of that ancient magic, movement shattered the trance.
Sienna shrieked in delight. She launched herself at him, throwing her arms around his thick neck. The sudden impact forced Kaelen to stumble back. His gaze ripped away from mine.
The spell broke. The courtyard erupted into chaos. Pack members roared at the top of their lungs, raising their crystal glasses into the night air. They cheered for their Alpha and the woman they believed he just chose. They waited for him to announce her as his Luna. They waited for the kiss that would seal their political and romantic union.
Kaelen went rigid as a board. His sharp jaw clenched tight enough to crack bone. Sienna pressed her curves flush against his chest, her flawless face beaming with victory. She looked perfect. She looked like a Luna.
Watching her touch him felt like a jagged blade sliding between my ribs. A slow, agonizing twist that carved out my heart.
For a split second, Kaelen’s glowing eyes flickered upward again. He found my face hovering in the dark window. The world tilted on its axis. He belonged to Sienna by pack law. He owed her his duty, his loyalty, and his name. But the humming bond pulsing through the air between us ignored those rules. It sang in my blood, a primal rhythm demanding I go down there and take what belonged to me.
The cheering grew deafening. Each happy shout drove the knife deeper into my gut. I could not stand there and watch him kiss her. I could not watch him accept her in front of hundreds of wolves.
I stumbled back from the glass. My hands clamped over my ears to block out the noise.
"No, no, no," I whispered. My breath hitched in short, painful gasps. I dragged a trembling hand through my messy hair, pulling at the roots.
How could this happen? How could a pathetic, wolfless girl feel the sacred mate bond this fiercely? It clawed at my insides like a caged beast. The mental image of Sienna and Kaelen entwined in a lover's embrace flashed behind my eyelids, suffocating me. The room shrank. The walls closed in.
I needed to get out. I needed oxygen.
I spun around and yanked my bedroom door open. The hallway stretched out before me, but the noise from outside still rattled the floorboards. The scent of expensive perfumes, spilled alcohol, and heavy wolf musk drifted up from the lower levels, choking my lungs. My instincts screamed at me to run down to the courtyard, to submit to my Alpha, to bare my neck and let him mark me.
I fought it. I fought the supernatural pull with every ounce of my meager strength.
I sprinted down the hall. I hit the staircase at a blind run. My dirty sneakers pounded against the wooden steps, the sound echoing in my own ears. I did not care that my hair was a tangled mess or that my clothes were stained with flour from the kitchen. I just needed to escape the crushing weight of this house.
I rounded the landing too fast. A solid body stepped directly into my path.
We collided hard. I bounced off a soft, expensive fabric and slammed my hip into the wooden banister.
Gemma gasped. She stumbled back, clutching the heavy railing to steady her balance. Her eyes widened in sheer outrage as she looked down at her pristine evening gown, then up at my flour-stained shirt.
"You disgusting bitch! You touched me, you filth!" Gemma shrieked. She brushed frantically at her dress as if my very existence carried a disease.
I did not flinch. I did not apologize. I did not even look her in the eye to acknowledge her cruel insult. I pushed off the banister and kept moving.
My tear-filled gaze locked onto the heavy oak front door. Gemma shouted something nasty at my back, her voice echoing in the grand foyer, but the words blurred into meaningless noise. I shoved the heavy door open, slipped through the gap, and threw myself into the cold night.
The sharp, biting autumn air hit my face. It offered no comfort.
I ran.
I plunged headfirst into the thick tree line bordering the pack lands. Darkness swallowed me whole. Low-hanging branches whipped my arms, leaving thin red lines in their wake. Thorns scratched my exposed cheeks. I ignored the stinging pain. I pumped my legs, driving myself deeper into the dense foliage, putting as much distance as possible between myself and the claiming ceremony.
I ran until my lungs burned and my legs felt like lead. My chest heaved, pulling in jagged breaths of pine and damp earth. The towering trees finally gave way. The thick foliage parted, revealing a massive, glassy expanse of water.
Our sanctuary.
The lake sat perfectly still under the silver moonlight, casting a mirror reflection of the night sky. Kaelen and I used to come here as children. We spent countless summer nights swimming in these dark waters, long before the pack elders labeled me a defective Omega. Long before anyone expected him to take a Luna. We used to be just Kaelen and Tessa.
A ragged sob tore through my throat. My knees buckled. I crashed into the muddy bank, wrapping my arms tight around my stomach to keep myself from falling apart.
"This can't be," I whispered brokenly into the empty air. My fingers dug into the fabric of my dirty shirt. "How can it be?"
It felt like a sick, twisted joke. The moon goddess must despise me. She paired the most powerful, revered Alpha in the region with the weakest, wolfless girl in the pack. We made no sense. We defied nature itself.
Kaelen promised me just hours ago that nothing would change when Sienna legally became his Luna. He lied. Everything changed the second the clock struck midnight. The universe reshaped itself around us, carving a new reality in stone. He was my mate. I was his.
The moment the realization settled over me, a strange, terrifying heat sparked deep inside my chest.
It did not feel like a blush. It felt like a lit match dropped into a pool of gasoline.
The heat flared. It surged through my human veins, turning my blood to boiling liquid. I gasped, falling back onto the damp grass. The newly formed mate bond reacted aggressively to my lack of a wolf. It demanded a vessel that could handle the raw, supernatural power of an Alpha's claim, but I had nothing to offer. My frail human body rejected the surge of magic.
The burning intensified. It spread down my arms, into my fingertips, down my legs, and up my neck. My skin grew uncomfortably hot to the touch.
I cried out in pure agony. My fingernails scratched at my forearms, desperate to carve the heat out of my flesh. Red welts formed under my frantic touch, but the scratching provided zero relief. The fire raged under my skin, boiling my blood, making it impossible to draw a full breath.
I needed to put out the fire. I needed to escape the searing memory of his intense, glowing gaze.
My trembling hands grabbed the hem of my shirt. I yanked it over my head, tearing the collar in my haste, and tossed it into the dirt. The cool night air hit my bare stomach, but it was not nearly enough to combat the flames. The internal inferno demanded ice.
I kicked off my sneakers. I shimmied out of my jeans, leaving them in a crumpled pile on the bank. I stripped away my underwear, standing naked and vulnerable on the muddy shore. The wind swept across my bare breasts and stomach, doing nothing to quell the raging heat coursing through my veins.
I stumbled forward. The squishy mud oozed between my bare toes.
I stepped into the lake.
The water was freezing. It bit into my ankles like icy needles. I welcomed the harsh shock. I waded deeper, pushing through the dark ripples until the freezing water reached my knees, then halfway up my thighs.
My breath stuttered. My teeth chattered. I prayed the biting cold would seep into my pores, numb my bleeding heart, and smother the frantic, agonizing bond singing in my blood.
I pushed deeper into the dark abyss. The icy water rose to my waist. I wrapped my arms around my bare chest, shivering uncontrollably. The physical chill battled the supernatural fire, creating a confusing, painful war inside my body.
I prepared to take another step, ready to submerge my shoulders into the freezing depths to finally wash away his scent from my memory.
Snap.
The loud, distinct sound of a breaking twig echoed sharply across the quiet water.
I froze instantly. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up.
"Tessa."
His voice rolled over the lake. Low. Gritty. Filled with a terrifying edge of pure possession.
The exact same invisible thread, intricately knotted minutes ago when midnight struck, yanked hard in my chest. The bond thrummed sharply, singing a victory song.
I whipped around in the waist-deep water. Freezing droplets splashed against my hips.
He stood on the muddy bank. He stepped confidently out from the dark shadows of the towering pines, illuminated by the bright, silvery moonlight.
Kaelen.
He abandoned his own claiming ceremony. He left Sienna standing in front of the cheering pack. He tracked me into the woods.
