We left before first light, not through the main paths, but along a route that kept us out of sight and away from common patrol lines. Valerius led the unit without raising his voice, and his wolves followed with the kind of discipline that did not need to be reinforced.

I stayed close to him, not because I was told to, but because it made the most sense given what we were walking into.
