I lay awake in the guest bedroom, staring blindly at the ceiling as the heavy, relentless rhythm of the rain pounded against the roof.
To be completely honest, I hadn’t expected Lydia to let me stay. When I stood out there at the iron gates, drenched to the bone and shouting her name into the howling wind, it had been an act of pure, desperate madness.
