Blair's Identity

[Blair is the villain in this story,] the cold, robotic voice echoed in the confines of her mind. [Switched at birth, she returned to the Vance family at seventeen. Consumed by jealousy over Serena, she caused endless trouble. Ultimately, the Vance family rejected her, and she died of stomach cancer.]

The mechanical words sent a profound chill down Blair’s spine. She tucked her chin lower, letting her messy hair shield her eyes from the sterile hospital room.

*A villain.* The realization settled like a stone in her gut. She was the textbook antagonist from those prime-time soap operas. It made brutal sense. In her past life, as she lay dying in a lonely ward, she had heard the whispers: *She finally passed. The Vance family can live in peace now.*

A bitter curse slipped past her lips, too quiet for anyone to catch. If the narrative doomed her to die a despised villainess, what was the point of this second chance? She refused to play the tragic victim again.

The System ignored her brewing anger and continued its impassive report. [Serena is watching Blair. Before your arrival, Serena had a brief exchange with Rhonda. Serena despises this foul-mouthed woman. Miriam just finished comforting her, promising Serena would never have to see Rhonda again.]

Blair’s breath hitched. A plan took root in her mind. The narrative wanted a clean break for the beloved fake heiress, sweeping the crude adoptive mother under the rug. Blair decided to rip that rug wide open.

While Miriam and Serena clung to each other in a tearful embrace, Blair straightened her spine. She dug into her faded pocket, retrieved a wad of crumpled cash, and stepped toward the rusted hospital bed.

"Mom," Blair said, extending the money. "Here is the cash for your hospital fees. I spent a hundred on the way, so there is exactly three thousand and four hundred left."

Rhonda’s face twisted into a scowl. "You little br—"

The older woman caught herself. Her gaze flicked past Blair, landing on the wealthy, polished couple standing near the door. Rhonda swallowed her intended curse, her sharp features smoothing into an awkward, forced neutral expression.

The damage was already done. The Vance couple missed nothing. Disgust flashed across Miriam’s elegant face. Conrad stiffened, his grip on Serena’s shoulder tightening. They saw right through Rhonda’s pathetic attempt at civility. To them, the Haskins family represented the gutter. The idea of their precious Serena breathing the same air as this rough, impoverished woman was unthinkable.

Miriam stepped forward, her expensive perfume masking the scent of antiseptic. She reached out, grasping Blair’s hand. "Sweetheart, you have suffered enough. Come home with us now."

Conrad stood rooted near the bed, acting as a human shield for Serena.

[The Vance parents will never allow their precious daughter to maintain contact with a woman as unrefined as Rhonda,] the System chimed in.

Hearing this, Blair snatched her hand out of Miriam’s grasp. She took a deliberate step backward.

The sudden rejection shocked the room into silence. Miriam stared at her empty hands, her brow knitting in confusion.

"If we all leave, no one will stay with Mom," Blair muttered. She kept her gaze fixed on the scuffed linoleum floor, playing the picture of a dutiful, conflicted daughter.

Serena’s breath hitched. Fresh tears welled in her wide amber eyes. "Mom..." she whimpered softly, pressing her face against Conrad’s sleeve.

Miriam’s expression darkened. She shot Blair a hard look. *What is wrong with this girl? Can she not stand to see Serena find a shred of peace?*

Blair ignored the unspoken judgment. She pivoted toward the bed, looking straight at the woman who had made her childhood a living hell. "Mom, if you stay here alone, I cannot come with them. You will never get to see Serena again. You raised her. You must miss her terribly after all these years. Plus, you are sick. You have no one to fetch you water or call the nurses."

Taking a deep breath, Blair delivered the killing blow. "Come with us to the Vance house."

Internally, Blair sneered. *Look at me, the most devoted daughter in the world.* The Vances possessed staggering wealth, a fact Rhonda knew all too well. Rhonda’s greed was a bottomless pit. If Blair dangled the Vance fortune in front of her, the old woman would follow them to the ends of the earth.

Rhonda lifted her head. Her calculating eyes drifted toward Serena, taking in the custom yellow dress and the protective stance of the billionaire standing beside her.

Blair turned her attention to the weeping fake heiress. "Serena, I know you are crying because you miss your real mother. You are just too scared to say it out loud, worried that Mom and Dad might mind. I am saying it for you. This way, you do not have to feel guilty. We are all family, right?"

Serena blinked, her tears pausing halfway down her cheeks. Her mind scrambled to find a delicate, victim-like response, but Blair had backed her into a corner. Refusing meant looking cold-hearted toward the woman who gave birth to her. Serena could only offer a numb, blank nod.

[Modification accepted,] the System’s voice crackled, carrying an undeniable edge of anticipation. [The Haskins family will follow the Vances to the elite estate. Integrating them into the household will disrupt the established storyline.]

A translucent blue bar materialized in Blair’s vision.

[Fate Change Progress: 5%]

Blair suppressed a victorious smirk. Her instinct was right. Dismantling the plot was her only way out.

The journey back to the city split the families into two starkly different worlds. The Vance couple and Serena rode ahead in a sleek, customized luxury sedan. Even through the tinted glass, Blair could picture their warm smiles and non-stop laughter, weaving a tight-knit bubble of familial bliss.

Blair found herself relegated to the trailing car—a hired luxury vehicle—sharing the enclosed space with Cody and Rhonda.

Cody bounced on the leather seats, his eyes wide with unfiltered greed. He knew Blair shared no blood with him, but the revelation of her true family's wealth eclipsed any awkwardness. He ran his calloused hands over the door panels.

"Mom, check out this logo," Cody hooted, pressing his face near the window. "This is a real Audi! We are riding in an Audi!"

Blair sat up front in the passenger seat, resting her head against the cool windowpane. A heavy wave of exhaustion washed over her. It was not the bone-deep, terminal fatigue of her previous life's illness, just the mundane tiredness of a teenager drained by endless drama.

Hearing Cody’s boisterous voice, she cracked an eye open and glanced at the sleek sedan leading the way. To the Haskins, this standard luxury car felt like hitting the jackpot. To the Vances, stuffing Blair into the secondary vehicle was a clear message of her place in the pecking order.

"Blair Haskins!" Cody shouted from the back seat, using her full name—a rare occurrence that usually signaled a demand.

Blair let out a soft snort, not bothering to turn around.

Cody puffed up his chest, adopting a tone of righteous indignation. "Mom worked her fingers to the bone raising you! She was your rock all these years. Soon, you are going to be a filthy rich heiress. Do not even think about forgetting her."

He leaned forward, kicking the back of Blair's seat. "Think about how hard her life is with her bad leg. You need to ask your rich dad to buy a car for me... I mean, for Mom!"

Blair nodded slowly, a cynical smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "Sure. I will ask Serena later. She can bring it up to my dad. After all, they are much tighter than I am with him."

In the back, Rhonda had been shifting uncomfortably, picking at the seams of her worn trousers. Hearing Blair’s casual deflection, she bolted upright.

"You little..." Rhonda caught herself, forcing a tight, hacking cough. "Ahem. Blair, stop speaking nonsense. That money belongs to your real family. Why would we want to take things from you?"

Rhonda reached over and pinched Cody’s thigh with bruising force.

"Ouch! Mom, what the hell? Why did you pinch me?!" Cody hollered, rubbing his leg.

Blair played with her cuticles, her tone light and conversational. "Mom is probably just terrified the Vances will tally up the bill for Serena’s child support over the past seventeen years and demand a refund."

The silence in the back seat was deafening. Blair hit the bullseye. Beyond the fear of a financial reckoning, Rhonda lived in terror that Serena might lose her grip on the lavish Vance lifestyle. If the Vances grew sick of the Haskins' demands, they might cast Serena out.

Blair let her head fall back against the headrest and closed her eyes. Memories of her previous timeline surfaced, bitter and sharp. Back then, she had craved their affection. She had spent hours mimicking high-society etiquette, studying Miriam’s favorite teas, and memorizing Conrad’s preferred reading materials, desperate for a sliver of parental warmth. Yet, as their biological daughter, she was treated like a diseased stray, never truly allowed inside their hearts or their home.

Not anymore.

The hired Audi glided smoothly through the towering wrought-iron gates of the Northridge Villa Estate. Manicured lawns and sprawling gardens blurred past the windows before the vehicles halted in front of a majestic three-story mansion.

The doors of the lead car popped open. Conrad and Miriam emerged, their faces glowing with affection. They flanked Serena, each taking one of her hands, and guided her up the sweeping marble steps. Halfway to the grand double doors, they paused. An awkward tension settled over their shoulders as they remembered the other passenger.

Miriam glanced down at Serena, noting the girl’s downcast eyes and trembling bottom lip. She turned to her husband, her voice hushed but carrying in the quiet estate air.

"Conrad, you go back and get that kid. Serena is fragile. She has never known real hardship or stress. I am terrified she will make herself sick if she gets too upset today."

Conrad nodded, his expression serious. "Alright. I will call the other boys home as well. Tell them we found their sister."

Miriam gave a dismissive wave of her hand. The fading novelty of reclaiming her biological child was heavily overshadowed by Serena’s silent tears. Miriam just wanted to usher her favorite daughter inside, away from the impending mess.

The engine of the trailing car cut off. The driver unbuckled his belt, stepped out onto the paved driveway, and shut the door behind him, leaving Blair isolated with the Haskins.

The click of the lock sealing echoed in the quiet cabin.

Before Blair could reach for her door handle, a rough hand clamped down on her right arm. Rhonda’s grip was like an industrial vice, fueled by decades of grueling manual labor. The older woman’s blunt fingernails dug deep into Blair’s skin through the thin, faded fabric of her sleeve, trapping her securely in the confined space of the passenger seat. The air in the car thickened with unspoken threats as Rhonda yanked Blair backward against the leather.
