Rewrite The Story

The sterile smell of antiseptic filled Blair Vance’s lungs as she fought for a single, shallow breath. She lay alone on the rigid hospital bed, staring at the blank white ceiling. The door remained shut. The room remained empty.

She was dying. Her family knew she was dying, yet the silence in the room provided the bitter answer she had spent her whole life trying to outrun. Her parents and brothers truly despised her enough to let her die alone.

Her fingers shook as she reached toward the nightstand. The effort to grab her phone drained the last remnants of color from her face. She just wanted to hear their voices one last time.

She dialed. The call failed. A robotic tone filled her ear.

Blair clenched her teeth, forcing her trembling thumb to hit redial. She panted, sweat beading on her pale forehead. Finally, the ringing stopped. The line clicked open.

"Hello, Mom, Dad, I—" Blair choked out.

"Blair, Mom and Dad won't take your calls." Serena Vance’s voice cut through the line. The tone was gentle, but the words were a steel blade. "Stop pushing it, or they'll sue you for damaging the Vance family."

Serena paused, letting the threat hang in the air like a judge's final gavel strike. "By the way, Preston and I are getting married. Leave us alone."

Through the receiver, Blair heard the rustle of expensive fabric and a man’s familiar voice. "Serena, try this wedding dress again."

Serena’s voice shifted instantly, dripping with sweetness. "Okay, I'll be right there." She paused. "I'm thirsty. I want some watermelon juice."

The man murmured a doting reply, his footsteps fading away. The line grew quiet, leaving only Serena’s breath against the microphone. When she spoke again, her voice dropped into a dark, mocking whisper.

"Blair, I know you're dying, but you did this to yourself. Why did you try to take everything I had so cruelly? If you had another chance, don't be so bad, okay?"

The call went dead.

Blair stared at the screen. She pressed dial again. A message popped up: *User has blocked your number.*

The phone slipped from her weak grip, clattering onto the floor. A ragged, bitter laugh clawed its way out of her throat. Tears spilled over her sunken cheeks, soaking into the thin hospital pillow.

She was the one who took Serena’s parents? She was the one who took Serena’s fiancé? She had ruined the Vance family’s perfect life?

Her entire existence had been labeled a mistake from the very beginning. But the Vance family was supposed to be her real home.

Blair’s vision blurred. The stark white ceiling faded into a heavy, suffocating gray. Her chest stopped moving.

In the final fraction of a second before the darkness swallowed her, a flat, mechanical voice echoed inside her skull.

*[Blair died on a sunny afternoon at the hospital, finally bringing peace back to the Vance family.]*

Shock ripped through her fading consciousness. The words looped in her mind as the void consumed her.

Blair’s eyes snapped open.

Blistering heat hammered against her skin. The smell of diesel fumes and hot asphalt replaced the sterile hospital air. She stood frozen at a rundown bus station, her hands gripping a cheap cell phone pressed against her ear.

"You little brat, get the money for Mom's hospital bill back now!" A furious screech exploded through the speaker, making Blair wince. "If you run off with it to your boyfriend, I'll break your legs!"

Blair lowered the phone, staring at the chipped paint of the station benches. This station had been demolished three years ago.

The silence on the line only fueled the caller’s rage. The cursing grew louder, spitting insults that Blair had endured every single day before she turned eighteen. For a long time, she had assumed that was just how families talked to each other.

She took a slow, steady breath. The air was thick, but she was breathing. She looked down at her hands. They were rough, calloused, but full of youth. No IV needles. No bruised, failing veins.

In her other hand, she clutched a thick stack of cash. The hospital money. Her worst nightmare.

She brought the phone back to her ear, her voice chillingly calm. "I'm just getting some fresh air outside. And I'm too young for a boyfriend."

"We all know you!" Rhonda Haskins snapped back. "You can't stop chasing guys. Who was that guy last time—"

Blair ended the call.

She stood in the suffocating heat, her mind racing. This wasn't a dream. She was back. She remembered this day with sickening clarity.

Growing up in the Haskins household meant endless labor and daily humiliation. Then came the day she overheard her adoptive parents whispering in the kitchen.

*"I want to know how our real daughter is,"* Rhonda had said. *"Since we swapped them, I haven't seen her. Every day, I have to look at that bitch. Just look at her. She's nothing but trouble."*

Blair had stormed in, demanding the truth. Rhonda hadn’t even bothered to deny it. She just sneered.

*"Yeah, I lied to you. Princess? Go find your rich dad. Tsk, what's the point of raising you? Better to raise a dog."*

When Blair had glared at her, Rhonda slapped her across the face.

The memories burned in Blair’s chest. In her past life, she had tried so hard to win their affection, only to realize her efforts meant nothing. When she finally returned to the Vance family, she thought she had found her salvation. Instead, they took one look at her rough hands and unrefined manners and declared Serena their true daughter, reducing Blair to a shameful adopted secret.

Suddenly, that same flat, mechanical voice echoed in her mind.

*[Blair gets to the station, buys a ticket to meet that street punk and get away.]*

Blair’s spine stiffened. The prompt triggered the darkest memory of this specific day.

In her past life, a local street punk had convinced her to steal Rhonda’s hospital money and run away. But it was a trap. He lured her to a remote alley, snatched the cash, and left her to be cornered by his gang. She barely escaped the assault, dragging her battered, bruised body back to the hospital.

When the Vance family eventually found her, they looked at her bruised face with disgust. They pitied Serena for having to endure such horrible biological parents, showering Serena with even more love while pushing Blair further into the shadows.

Blair stared at the stack of cash in her hands. The despair that had crushed her on her deathbed vanished, replaced by a freezing, calculated rage.

Her phone buzzed in her palm. The punk was calling to check her location.

A cold smile touched her lips. "Let the dying old lady teach these young punks a lesson. Girls should be loved, not lied to."

She turned her back on the ticket counter and walked away from the station, her steps sharp and deliberate.

Twenty minutes later, Blair stepped into a secluded, garbage-strewn alley behind a convenience store. The skinny street punk leaned against a brick wall, smoking a cigarette. He looked up, grinning as he spotted her.

"You got the cash?" he asked, pushing off the wall.

Blair didn't say a word. She closed the distance in three quick strides. Before he could react, she grabbed the collar of his faded t-shirt, twisted it tight, and slammed his back against the brick wall.

The cigarette dropped from his mouth. "Hey! What the—"

Blair drove her knee into his stomach. The punk doubled over, gasping for air. She grabbed a handful of his greasy hair and yanked his head back, forcing him to look at her. Her eyes were dead, devoid of any fear or hesitation.

"Kid," Blair said, her voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "Get better before you try scamming girls."

She shoved him hard. He hit the ground, clutching his stomach and groaning in pain. Blair stood over him, smoothing out the wrinkles in her shirt. The air in the alley felt crisp despite the summer heat. Power surged through her veins.

Right on cue, the strange voice materialized in her mind once more.

*[Modification: Blair got to the station. After the call, she beat the street punk up bad. From then on, he changed his ways, studied hard, and became her loyal buddy.]*
