The Croft Family's Shame

Arthur slammed his heavy leather briefcase onto the glass dining table. The deafening crack echoed through the sprawling, high-ceilinged living room, freezing the air inside the Croft family villa. His face resembled a dark, brewing thundercloud, the thick veins at his temples throbbing visibly against his reddening skin.

Cora stood near the arched entryway, her hands tucked loosely into her pockets. For a fleeting second, her chest tightened. It was a visceral reaction, a lingering muscle memory from her past life—the instinct to cower and apologize before the furious patriarch.

But the sensation vanished just as quickly as it came, replaced by a cold, unbreakable resolve. In her previous life, this scheming man had played the role of a strict, upright father figure. He had manipulated her with endless lectures and stern glares, making her believe she was constantly falling short, all while secretly plotting in the shadows to steal the vast inheritance Gideon had left her. He had systematically isolated her, stripping away her assets and driving her to the very brink of death so he could absorb her wealth into the Croft empire.

Having finally seen right through their toxic, transactional affection, Cora was no longer their naive, eager-to-please pawn. They had treated her as a disposable tool, a convenient stepping stone for their own greed. This time, her eyes were wide open. She was ready to sit back, fold her hands, and watch the entire Croft family crash and burn by their own hands.

Arthur dragged a hand roughly over his face, his breathing heavy. Usually, he used Cora as his personal emotional punching bag to vent his daily frustrations. Whenever business meetings went south, or investments failed, he brought his temper home and projected it onto her, dissecting her minor flaws to feed his fragile ego. Cora braced herself, fully expecting his blistering fury to turn her way. She even calculated the distance to a nearby antique vase, ready to defend herself if he stepped out of line.

To her immense surprise, Arthur did not even glance in her direction. Today, his raw, unfiltered anger was aimed squarely at his newly returned golden child, Sienna.

"Sienna," Arthur barked, his voice laced with venom as he pointed a stiff finger at her. "Are those disgusting photos online of you or not?"

Sienna froze in her tracks. The blood drained from her face, leaving her skin a sickly, chalky white. She stood rigid near the plush sofa, her lips parting as she struggled to process the sudden accusation. Since the day she had returned to the Croft estate to claim her rightful place, Arthur had treated her like delicate royalty, indulging her every whim. Seeing his explosive temper directed at her was a massive shock.

"W-what photos?" Sienna stammered in sheer disbelief. Her wide, panicked eyes darted nervously between her father and her mother, unable to form a coherent sentence.

Arthur did not give her a single second to recover. He roared over her weak defense, stepping closer to loom over her trembling frame. "You're an adult! Don't you know how to dress properly in public? Are you trying to deliberately ruin the family's reputation? Do you have any idea how humiliated I was in front of Mr. Mayer today when he showed me those pictures?"

Panic seized Sienna’s throat as the vivid memory of the afternoon rushed back to choke her. The horrifying sound of the seams giving way replayed in her mind. The sudden rush of cold mall air hitting her bare skin. The horrifying realization that her red dress had torn wide open from the seam to the hem, leaving her half-naked. Her breasts and bare crotch had been exposed to the glaring fluorescent lights and the staring crowds, captured forever by dozens of flashing smartphone cameras.

Desperation kicked in. Tears welled in Sienna’s eyes, spilling hot over her lashes as she pointed a shaking finger at her sister. "Dad, I didn't mean to... It was Cora! She insisted I wear that dress!"

Cora leaned casually against the mahogany doorframe, watching the pathetic performance. She crossed her arms, a faint, mocking smile playing on her lips, and effortlessly sidestepped the trap.

"Oh, I had nothing to do with it," Cora said. Her voice was light, carrying a tone of amused innocence. "Sienna came to my room begging for the dress. Mom was with us at that exact time. Right, Mom?"

The spotlight immediately shifted to Valerie. Sweating profusely under her husband's furious glare, Valerie swallowed hard. She clutched her expensive handbag to her chest, shifting her weight awkwardly.

"Arthur, honey... please don't get so mad just yet," Valerie tried to pacify him, her voice wobbling under the immense pressure. "Sienna really didn't mean for this to happen. It was a wardrobe malfunction. But how did those pictures spread so fast? Is it really that big of a deal?"

"A big deal?" Arthur’s face flushed a deep, dangerous red. He threw his hands in the air. "It made the local news headlines! What do you think?"

Valerie gasped, her face turning ashen. She raised a trembling hand to her mouth. "The news? Oh God, what are we going to do now? Will this affect our business?"

Cora watched the exchange with clinical, detached curiosity. It was almost comical. Sienna stood there, shattered and crying over her ruined dignity, while her parents bypassed comforting her to immediately panic about their profit margins. Their so-called familial love came with heavy strings attached, and right now, Sienna was proving to be a massive liability.

Arthur paced the length of the Persian rug, rubbing his temples to stave off a pounding headache. "I barely saved face. When Mayer shoved his phone in my face at the restaurant, I had to lie through my teeth to protect our business deals. I told him it was just a lookalike. A random, trashy girl from the city. But the rumors are spreading fast."

Sienna sniffled, wiping her tear-stained cheeks. "Dad, you have to fix this. Can't you hire someone to get those pictures taken down? Please, just hire a team to delete them!"

Arthur stopped pacing and shot her a look of pure disgust. "Do you think we are made of money? Do you have any idea how fast this garbage spreads? Look at your phone! It would cost a massive fortune to hire fixers to scrub the internet, and I refuse to waste that kind of cash on your careless mistake."

Standing silently by the door, Cora watched as a deep crimson flush of ultimate shame spread across Sienna’s neck and face.

Sienna pulled her phone from her purse, her hands shaking so hard she nearly dropped the device. She opened her social media applications, and a barrage of notifications exploded on her screen. Her breath hitched in her throat, sounding like a dying gasp. She frantically swiped her thumb across the screen, scrolling through the viral posts on her timeline. The comment sections beneath the censored and uncensored photos were a toxic cesspool of degradation.

Thousands of strangers were mocking her half-naked body. They dissected every inch of her exposed flesh with brutal, unfiltered cruelty.

"Did you see the high-res version? Her breasts were right there in the open, no bra, no nothing. Who goes out like that?"

"Half-naked in a crowded mall. Her bare ass was hanging out for everyone to see. What a tramp."

"Must be an escort trying to drum up business. Or maybe she's doing some public humiliation kink for her master."

Sienna’s chest heaved. She read another thread where anonymous users questioned her morals and tore apart her physical flaws with surgical precision.

"She’s flat anyway. Not even worth the click."

"Imagine showing off your crotch to a mall full of families and acting surprised when people take pictures. Trash."

"Her parents must be so proud of their little exhibitionist."

"Where I'm from, girls like that belong on the street. Even then, they couldn't give themselves away for free."

Worse than the insults were the transactions. Sienna watched in horror as users eagerly traded high-resolution, unedited photos of her most humiliating moment for mere dollars on public forums.

"I got the uncensored pics. Two bucks a pop. DM me your cash app."

"Don't pay him, I've got the HD video of her dress ripping right down the middle. Sending it for free to anyone who replies with a fire emoji."

"Resources like this shouldn't cost a dime. Drop an emoji, and I'll send the folder."

The sheer volume of the digital assault was suffocating. Every time she refreshed the page, hundreds of new comments, new shares, and new mocking emojis flooded the screen. Her reputation, the pristine, wealthy image she had carefully cultivated since returning to the Croft family, was being shredded in real-time. She had been reduced to cheap digital fodder.

Humiliated to her core and seething with a murderous rage, Sienna squeezed her phone until her knuckles turned a stark white. She desperately searched her racing mind for a way to pin the entire catastrophe squarely on Cora. Cora had to pay for this. If Cora had just given her the dress without making a fuss, if Cora had warned her the seams were weak, none of this would have happened.

Yet, looking back at the memory, Cora had been nothing more than a supportive, smiling bystander when Sienna herself stubbornly chose the garment. There was no angle, no logical thread Sienna could pull to wrap the blame around Cora's neck.

Sienna gritted her teeth. She would just have to lie. She would cry, scream, and accuse Cora of sabotage. She forcefully gathered her tears, taking a deep, shuddering breath to fuel her incoming tantrum. She opened her mouth to loudly accuse Cora of failing to warn her about the poor quality of the fabric, ready to unleash her wrath.

Before a single sound could leave Sienna's lips, Cora's calm, measured voice cut through the heavy tension like a sharp, precise blade.

"Mom, Dad," Cora began. She shifted her posture, looking between Arthur and Valerie. Her tone was steady, deliberate, and laced with fake concern. "Don't you think it's a bit inappropriate to hold a massive return party for Sienna right now, given everything that's just happened?"

The living room plunged into a suffocating silence.

Sienna's tear-filled eyes widened in pure shock, her breath catching painfully in her throat. The grand return party was supposed to be her ultimate triumph, her grand introduction to the elite circles of society. It was the night she would officially claim her throne as the true Croft heiress, standing under the glittering chandeliers while everyone bowed to her status. Cora was directly attacking her social debut.

She stared at Cora, the blood rushing in her ears, her voice trembling as the sheer gravity of the suggestion hit her.

"What did you just say?"
