Viper Is Exposed
Troy’s aura was forged in blood and broken bones. Yet, beneath the gaze of Diana Maxwell, it evaporated like mist over hot coals. She stood perfectly still near the heavy mahogany doors, her alluring red dress clinging to her flawless figure. She didn't need to raise a fist or draw a weapon. The sheer, suffocating weight of her presence pressed down on the room, carrying an almost divine authority.
Troy felt that dark, impassive gaze lock onto his frame. Thick beads of cold sweat pushed through his pores, tracing erratic paths down his scarred cheeks and thick neck. This man, a tattooed enforcer who commanded fear across the city’s criminal underworld, felt genuine, paralyzing dread knot in his stomach. The ignorant fools in the parlor might just see a stunning woman interrupting a fight, but he knew the brutal reality. She was the heir to the untouchable Maxwell family empire. She held the power to erase him from existence with a single phone call.
However, beneath his terror, a venomous, boiling hatred for Vance rapidly brewed. Troy ground his teeth behind a clamped jaw. What right does this pathetic trash have to make the Maxwell heir treat me like a stray dog? It was Vance's fault he was standing here, humiliated and stripped of his power.
"Get out," Diana stated. Her tone was light and airy, carrying a cold finality that left no room for negotiation or delay.
"Yes, Ms. Maxwell," Troy replied instantly. He didn't offer a single word of protest. He bowed his massive frame deeply, dipping his head in a display of profound respect. Turning on his heel, his heavy boots thudded against the hardwood floor. As he swept past Vance toward the exit, he kept his expression carefully neutral, fighting to hide his rage.
But Vance’s sharp eyes caught the flicker of movement. Beneath the enforcer’s subservient facade hid a concentrated, lethal killing intent. Vance held the massive man's glare for a fraction of a second, his own expression starkly indifferent. He was already calculating the future threat. The heavy doors clicked shut behind the crime boss, severing the immediate tension.
With the threat gone, Warren scrambled to capitalize on the moment. He sucked in his stomach, puffed out his chest, and angled his jaw to what he considered his most dashing, handsome posture. He flashed a practiced, warm smile, desperately hoping to catch the billionaire heiress's eye. A single connection with the Maxwell family could catapult his career into a different stratosphere.
Diana glided right past him. She didn't so much as blink in his direction, leaving Warren frozen in his awkward pose, his desperate smile stiffening into a mask of pure misery.
She stopped directly in front of Vance. The chilling authority melted from her features, replaced by a gentle, enchanting smile. "I haven't properly thanked you for saving my life yesterday," she said softly, her melodic voice meant only for him.
Toby, standing mere inches away, stared at her with a slack-jawed, bewildered expression. He had seen women of her caliber on television screens, untouchable icons of wealth and beauty, but having one standing close enough to smell her expensive perfume was short-circuiting his brain. The rest of the former classmates were equally stunned, paralyzed by the sheer absurdity of the unfolding situation.
Vance gave a short, dismissive nod. "It's fine."
"Shall we go up and talk?" Diana suggested, gesturing toward the private elevators reserved for the building's elite.
Vance hesitated for a beat, his gaze sweeping over the shocked faces of the crowd. He found no reason to stay in this room. "Okay."
Diana’s smile widened a fraction. She turned and led the way out of the parlor, her red dress swishing around her calves. Vance followed her out, leaving the stunned room behind.
The moment the doors sealed shut behind Vance and Diana, the suffocating atmosphere that had pinned the room down instantly shattered. The silence held for a fragile second before the room erupted. The vicious sneers and mocking tones returned with a vengeance, the crowd desperate to normalize the baffling event they had just witnessed.
Sylvia crossed her arms, her lips curling into a disdainful pout. "Why is he acting all high and mighty?" she announced loudly, making sure her voice carried to every corner of the parlor. "Does he seriously think his life is going to change for the better just because he got lucky and saved Diana Maxwell's life? He's still the same pathetic loser. He's a fool if he thinks a simple favor elevates his status to her level."
Nadine tugged at Sylvia's arm, her face glowing with sycophantic admiration. "Come on, Sylvia, just let this go. Don't waste your breath on someone like him. You are about to become a famous celebrity soon. You're the one destined for the real high life."
That was all the prompting the room needed. The focus aggressively pivoted away from Vance's inexplicable connection to the Maxwell family and directly onto Sylvia. The crowd swarmed her, their eyes wide with fabricated envy and genuine greed, bombarding her with rapid-fire questions.
"Sylvia, is it true? Are you really signing a contract with Apex Pictures?" a female classmate asked, her voice breathless with excitement.
A smug, triumphant light danced in Sylvia's eyes. She tossed her hair over her shoulder, soaking in the attention. "That's right," she declared proudly. "Apex Pictures isn't just some small indie studio. It was established by the legendary diva, Harper Quinn, and it is backed directly by Winston, the richest man in all of Oakhaven. It's a massive, lucrative company. You guys have no idea the kind of astronomical resources and industry power they hold."
Nadine chimed in, smiling brightly. "My sister is also in the final stages of signing a contract with them. It's an exclusive club. If you guys want to see Sylvia or my sister in the future, you're going to have to buy a ticket and watch them on the big screen."
None of them realized the profound irony of their boasting. They were worshipping the ground of Apex Pictures, wholly oblivious to the fact that the very man they had spent the evening mocking and belittling was the literal owner of the entertainment empire they so desperately coveted.
Across the room, Warren clapped his hands together, forcing a boisterous laugh to mask the sting of Diana’s rejection. "Let's talk while we eat, everyone. Excuse me, waiter! We are ready to order the best things on the menu."
Toby, still processing the sheer terror of Troy's arrival and the shock of Diana's rescue, nervously approached the executive. He rubbed the back of his neck, his eyes darting to the floor before looking up at Warren. "Mr. Ford," Toby began cautiously, his voice tight with anxiety. "Does the promise you made earlier still count?"
Warren turned, an amused, condescending smirk playing on his lips. "Promise? What did I promise, Toby?"
Toby swallowed hard, his heart rate picking up. "You said... you said that if Vance actually managed to bring us to the ninth floor, you would buy that luxury apartment from me. And you promised a two-million-dollar commission for closing the deal."
Warren let out a loud, dismissive chuckle, waving his hand in the air as if swatting away a pesky fly. "Oh, come on, Toby. Think about it. Does Vance really have the genuine ability to bring us in here on his own merit? He just got incredibly lucky with that life-saving favor. The Maxwell heir was just paying off a debt. I saw through his act from the start. I just didn't want to embarrass him further in front of everyone by calling out his bluff." He patted Toby hard on the shoulder. "Let's just eat first. We can talk about this business matter later."
Naomi nodded in agreement, picking up a silver fork from the table setting. "Warren is right. Let's not talk about stressful work stuff today. We're here to celebrate. Let's eat and not ruin everyone's good mood over a silly bet."
Toby stood frozen as Warren turned his back to mingle. A heavy weight settled in Toby's chest, his heart sinking rapidly. The bitter realization washed over him. Warren had never intended to buy that apartment. He had never intended to hand over a two-million-dollar commission. The arrogant executive had merely been using the astronomical sum to show off his wealth and flex his imaginary power over Vance. Toby sighed inwardly, cursing his own desperate gullibility.
High above the petty squabbles and false bravado of the ninth floor, the atmosphere in the tenth-floor parlor was a world apart. The room was ultra-secure, the heavy doors sealing away any trace of noise from the lower levels. It was a sanctuary of quiet luxury.
Vance settled onto a plush, dark leather couch, running his hand along the armrest. He glanced around the meticulously designed space. "Not bad," he commented casually. "This couch is an executive design. A single set like this runs around six to seven thousand."
Diana smiled faintly, walking over to a sleek, modern kitchenette built into the wall. "You know your stuff," she said. She opened a custom-built cabinet, the hinges silent. "What do you want to drink?"
"Just some plain black coffee would be fine," Vance replied.
Diana pulled out a bag of ground coffee, her movements precise and practiced. She personally prepared the brew, letting the rich, bitter aroma fill the soundproof room. She poured the dark liquid into a simple ceramic mug and carried it over, handing it to him.
Vance took the mug, raising an eyebrow. "What a surprise. A place like this, and you actually stocked up on ordinary, everyday coffee."
"Well, I might encounter all kinds of clients when doing business," Diana explained, taking a seat on the opposite couch. She stretched her arms above her head, the movement shifting the fabric of her red dress and accentuating her perfect hourglass figure. "It's best to be prepared for all sorts of possibilities. Not everyone wants aged wine or expensive tea."
Vance took a slow sip of the hot coffee, letting the caffeine settle his nerves. "Thank you for your help down there today," he said quietly, his dark eyes meeting hers over the rim of the mug.
Diana’s smile faded, replaced by a deep, troubled frown. She shook her head. "It's no trouble at all. Really, I should be the one apologizing. I am incredibly sorry for Troy's aggressive behavior. He stepped out of line." She leaned forward, her tone turning serious. "You don't have to worry about him anymore. I promise you, I will handle him promptly and severely. I won't let a dog like him cause you any further trouble in this city."
Vance lowered his mug, a soft, genuine chuckle escaping his lips. His expression was starkly indifferent. "I don't really care about him."
Diana's frown deepened into a scowl of genuine irritation. She stared at him, frustrated by his apparent lack of self-preservation. "Troy isn't just some street thug, Vance. He is incredibly full of himself because he firmly controls the Saber Alliance. That is a massive, exceptionally lethal organization."
She didn't mention that she had spent the entire morning running a comprehensive background check on him. The files sitting on her desk painted a very clear, very pathetic picture. According to the data, Vance was a divorced man who had been cast aside by his wife. He had lost his company, stripped of his assets just to cover a six-hundred-thousand-dollar medical fee for his grandfather's surgery. He was a man with a broken past and an empty bank account. In her analytical mind, he possessed no real strengths, resources, or power beyond his obvious, brute physical combat skills.
And brute force meant nothing against an army. There were plenty of elite killers in the Saber Alliance who operated in the shadows. Troy was one of the few who dared to show his face in public, backed by an empire of violence.
"Don't worry about that," Vance stated nonchalantly. He leaned back against the expensive leather, resting his ankle over his knee. His voice remained perfectly even, devoid of any bravado or fear. "If he crosses the line, I will destroy him. And when I decide to do that, even you won't be able to stop me."
Diana sat up straighter, her irritation spiking. "Troy isn't as simple as you think. He has resources you can't even fathom. Also..."
Vance cut her off. He didn't raise his voice, but the sudden sharpness in his gaze silenced her. "Also, you've conducted an extensive, illegal investigation on me, right?"
Diana froze.
Vance flashed a dark, knowing half-smile. He set his coffee mug down on the glass table with a soft clink. "Let's see," he mused, tapping his finger against his knee. He then flawlessly, casually listed off the data points. "You checked my personal credit scores. You pulled my old company filings and the transfer of legal ownership. You dug into my restricted travel records, and you even mapped out my recent purchase history. Isn't that right?"
Diana’s beautiful dark eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated shock. Her breath hitched. The person she had tasked with the investigation was codenamed Viper. Viper was a top-tier asset, an undetectable master hacker, universally recognized within the underground as the best tracker in all of Oakhaven. Viper worked in total secrecy and had never, not once in his career, made a mistake or been discovered by a target.
How could this supposedly washed-up, divorced nobody possibly know the exact details of a covert surveillance operation?
Vance leaned forward, closing the distance between them. The playful indifference vanished from his face, replaced by a cold, penetrating intensity. "Viper is indeed capable," Vance whispered, his voice a low rumble in the quiet room. "He is level-headed and meticulous. However, Ms. Maxwell, have you ever heard of a certain phrase? If you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."
The words struck her like a physical blow. A terrifying clarity washed over Diana. She realized, with a sudden, chilling certainty, that she had vastly, profoundly underestimated the man sitting across from her. He wasn't just a skilled fighter. He was a predator who had seen her looking and had traced her gaze right back to the source.
She sat up perfectly straight, her spine rigid against the couch cushions. She narrowed her eyes, trying to piece together the puzzle of the man in front of her. Her heart hammered against her ribs. "Who exactly are you?" she asked, unable to stop the slight tremble in her voice.
Vance picked up his mug again, taking another slow sip of the black coffee. He looked at her over the rim, his eyes unreadable. "Ms. Maxwell," he muttered, "it's not good to know too much."
Diana sat frozen in her spot for a long, heavy moment. The silence stretched between them, thick with tension. Then, suddenly, a laugh bubbled up from her throat. She chuckled, the melodic sound ringing out and breaking the heavy atmosphere in the room. She shook her head, a mix of disbelief and genuine amusement washing over her. "It seems that I have failed spectacularly," she admitted, her tone shifting to one of formal respect. "It's my bad. I sincerely apologize for the intrusive surveillance. I shouldn't have dug into your past."
"It's fine," Vance responded smoothly, settling back into the couch. A faint, enigmatic smile played on his lips. "The things you found out were only the things I was willing to present."
Hearing this terrifying, casual admission sent a shiver down Diana's spine. If the ruined marriage, the lost company, and the medical debt were just a carefully constructed facade he allowed people to see, then what was he hiding? She felt as though she were standing on the edge of a cliff, looking down into a depth that was more unfathomable than the darkest ocean. The mystery surrounding him didn't scare her away; instead, it ignited a spark. An intense, burning intellectual and romantic interest flared to life within her chest, firmly hooking her into the dangerous, thrilling puzzle that was Vance.
