Fiona's Fear

The private jewelry fair was secured like an impenetrable fortress. Guards sealed off the surrounding alleys and streets, cross-referencing invitations and verifying the identity of every elite guest stepping out of their luxury vehicles. Sienna heaved a deep sigh of relief as she finally cleared the tight security perimeter, her pearl-beaded purse clutched firmly in her hand. The moment she stepped past the heavy velvet ropes, the chaotic city noise faded away, replaced by the soft hum of classical music and the melodic clinking of crystal glasses.

She navigated the grand, opulent banquet hall. Wealth dripped from the ceiling in the form of massive crystal chandeliers. Rows of pristine, reinforced glass cabinets lined the perimeter, waiting to display the night's multi-million-dollar treasures, but for now, the guests lingered around a lavish buffet spread. A concierge with a practiced smile ushered Sienna toward the designated VIP seating area.

Sienna found her spot in the coveted sixth row. This location was a massive privilege, offering an unobstructed view of the central podium. She settled into the plush chair, well aware she only lucked into this prime real estate because the invitation was initially meant for Wesley. The sheer scale of his hidden influence hummed in the back of her mind as she smoothed the shimmering fabric of her white luna dress over her knees. The diamonds embedded in the bodice caught the light with every breath she took.

A polished man in his thirties took the seat beside her. He wore a sharp, tailored suit that spoke of generational wealth and quiet confidence, his hair slicked back with meticulous care. He leaned in, his gaze dropping to her neckline before snapping up to her face with eager, predatory interest. She stood out among the sea of manufactured socialites, her natural, ethereal beauty catching the ambient light of the hall.

"A pleasure to meet you," the man said, his voice smooth and practiced. He slid a premium, embossed business card across the table. "Kirk Randall. President of Prime Incorporated."

Sienna offered a standard, polite smile, the kind she reserved for demanding business clients. She took the card, her expression guarded but gracious. "Sienna Caldwell."

Before Kirk could launch into a charm offensive, a ripple of hushed whispers swept through the banquet hall. The low hum of conversation ground to a halt. Heads turned. Sienna followed the collective gaze toward the grand entrance, and her polite smile vanished.

Declan and Fiona stepped through the arched double doors, their hands intertwined.

Sienna’s fingers dug into her palms. Her nails bit into her skin. She tightened her grip around her waist, struggling to contain the hatred boiling in her chest. Fiona looked the part of an innocent angel, draped in the extravagant gown she had spent hours perfecting in her sprawling master bedroom. The thick layers of makeup, the heavy contouring, the sweeping dramatic lashes—it all culminated in a polished, untouchable facade.

Beside her, Declan commanded the room without saying a single word. He wore a sharp black suit that broadened his shoulders and accentuated his tall, athletic frame. His magnetic, intimidating aura suffocated the space around him. The surrounding women paused with their champagne flutes midway to their lips, their eyes tracking his every move. Envy radiated from the female guests. They stared at Fiona’s ordinary features, their hungry, jealous gazes dissecting her every flaw, all desperately wishing they could trade places and hook their arm through the billionaire CEO's.

Sienna quickly averted her eyes. She reached for her crystal goblet, taking a slow, steadying sip of red wine. She stared at the liquid sloshing against the glass, pretending the power couple didn't exist.

But Fiona’s sharp, observant eyes scanned the VIP section. Her gaze snagged on Sienna. Fiona’s breath hitched. She scoffed internally, her chest tightening with furious bafflement. What is she doing here? Fiona’s mind raced. This is an elite event. How did a nobody like her sneak past the strict guest selection?

A concierge guided Declan and Fiona to their seats. Fate, or perhaps a cruel joke of the seating chart, placed them at the long table directly opposite Sienna.

Trapped facing her enemies, Sienna kept her focus on the intricate table settings. But the silence stretched, heavy and taut. She made the mistake of glancing up.

Through the illuminating, flickering light of the centerpiece candles, Sienna locked eyes with Declan. The ambient glow cast long shadows across the sharp, chiseled angles of his face. His thick eyebrows framed eyes as dark as obsidian. The magnetic pull of his attractive gaze struck her chest. The tension between them hummed, unspoken and heavy, drowning out the chatter of the room. He stared back, an unreadable expression tightening his jaw.

The momentary spell shattered. Fiona leaned forward, her face twisting into a hateful, warning glare that shot daggers across the table.

Sensing the shift in mood and eager to win her over, Kirk shifted closer to Sienna. He picked up a delicate, handcrafted pastry from the tiered dessert stand and offered it to her. "Miss Caldwell, you must try this. I promise you'll love the taste."

Sienna tore her eyes away from Declan. She turned to Kirk, preferring his harmless, transparent flirtation over the bitter toxicity radiating from across the table. She accepted the pastry, taking a small bite. "Thank you," she said, flashing him a sweet, genuine smile.

Fiona’s eyes narrowed. Unwilling to let Sienna enjoy a single moment, she seized Declan’s arm. She leaned her weight against his side, her voice coy but loud enough to carry over the quiet music. "Declan, I want that dessert over there. Could you fetch it for me?"

Declan blinked, pulling his gaze from Sienna. He stretched out his long arm, retrieving the requested treat, and placed it on Fiona’s plate. Fiona took a deliberate bite, smirking and gawking at Sienna with unchecked glee. She paraded Declan's obedience, rubbing her prized catch in Sienna's face to gloat about her single status.

Sienna simply rolled her eyes upward. The sheer absurdity of the display grated on her nerves. She looked at Declan’s stoic profile, profoundly wondering how a man holding so much power, a man capable of crushing empires, could treat such a vile, transparent woman like the apple of his eye. It made no sense.

The suffocating tension at the table grew unbearable. The air felt thick, heavy with unspoken histories and toxic jealousy. Sienna placed her napkin down. She needed an escape.

"Excuse me," Sienna said, her voice cool and steady. "I need to use the washroom."

She pushed her chair back and stood. The movement drew the light. Her glimmering, eight-million-dollar dress flowed around her like liquid starlight, perfectly accentuating her slim waist and the elegant curve of her spine. Kirk’s eyes glued themselves to her figure, captivated by her effortless grace. Across the table, Declan froze, his dark eyes tracking her retreat, a flicker of surprise and raw attention breaking his composed exterior.

Fiona saw his reaction. Her grip on her fork tightened until her knuckles turned white. Unwilling to let her rival have a moment's peace or leave Declan with that lingering image, she immediately rose from her seat. "I'll be right back, Declan. I need to freshen up."

Fiona hurried after Sienna, her heels clicking sharply against the polished floor, following her target like a dark shadow.

The restroom was a magnificent cavern of floor-to-ceiling imported marble and gold fixtures. The heavy wooden door swung shut, cutting off the noise of the banquet hall. Sienna stood by the sinks, washing her hands under the warm water. She stared at her own reflection in the massive mirror, taking a deep breath to center herself.

The door pushed open. Fiona marched in, the mask of the innocent angel melting away to reveal the bitter, insecure woman underneath. She stopped right behind Sienna, their eyes meeting in the silvered glass.

"Don't tell me you got in here with the help of some wealthy man you're sleeping with," Fiona maliciously taunted, her voice echoing off the marble tiles.

Sienna reached for a linen towel. She dried her hands with slow, deliberate motions, shooting a glacial gaze back at Fiona’s reflection. "That is none of your concern."

"Oh, but it is," Fiona pressed, taking a step closer. "They were strict with the guest selection tonight. No ordinary person stood a chance to get past the gates. Yet you are here. Which rich fool brought you?"

Sienna turned around, facing Fiona directly. The difference in their presence was stark. Sienna stood tall, wrapped in natural elegance, while Fiona radiated desperate hostility. "What about you? You aren't much better than I am."

Fiona lifted her chin, her lips curling into a complacent, smug smile. "I am Declan's girlfriend. That alone puts me ahead of you in life."

Sienna let out a dark, cynical grunt. The arrogance in Fiona's voice was the final push she needed. She decided to play a terrifying psychological card, aiming straight for the other woman's darkest fear.

Sienna took a slow step forward, closing the distance between them. Her voice dropped to a quiet murmur. "Would you believe me if I said I could make myself his wife with just a single word? What would that make you?"

Fiona's smug face dropped. The color drained from her cheeks, leaving her skin pale as a ghost beneath the heavy contouring. Her eyes widened, a sudden, paralyzing fear seizing her throat. Her breath hitched. The marble room felt like it was shrinking.

A terrifying question rang out in Fiona's mind, deafening in its intensity. Does she remember what happened that night?
