The Ultimate Betrayal

Kira's POV:

The stale stench of sweat, cheap perfume, and fresh sex hits me the second I push open the bedroom door.

My heart drops straight into my stomach. My feet root to the hardwood floor, nails digging into my palms until the skin stings and threatens to break.

Right in front of me is Silas. My fiancé. The man who promised me a lifetime, the man I was supposed to marry in just a few short months.

He scrambles at the foot of our bed, frantically pulling up his boxer briefs. In his blind panic, his dark trousers are tangled around his ankles, and I catch a pathetic flash of his semi-flaccid dick before he shoves it away in sheer terror, his fingers fumbling desperately with his zipper.

His face drains of all color, leaving him looking like a ghost. His hair sticks up in sweaty clumps. His mouth—the very same mouth that kissed my forehead this morning and whispered words of comfort—looks red and bruised from sucking on someone else.

Behind him, a naked woman thrashes in the tangled silk sheets. The sheets I spent weeks picking out. She scrambles backward like a terrified rat caught in a trap, clutching the white duvet to her bare breasts. Her wide, panicked eyes meet mine for a split second before she darts across the room. Her bare ass flashes in the dim light as she bolts into the master bathroom, slamming the heavy wooden door shut behind her.

Coward.

"Kira." Silas finally manages to untangle his legs. He stands up, his belt hanging loose and unbuckled. His voice shakes with panic. "It is not what it looks like."

A laugh scratches its way up my throat. It sounds hollow. Dead. It is the laugh of a woman who just realized her reality is a sick joke.

I take a slow step into the room, my heels clicking sharply against the polished wood. I do not feel like I am in my own body anymore. I feel detached, floating above the wreckage, watching this excuse of a man try to lie his way out of getting caught red-handed.

"Not what it looks like?" I echo softly, tilting my head as I stare at him.

He really just used the cheapest, most pathetic line in history.

A lump lodges in my throat, burning like battery acid.

"Silas." My tone is eerily flat, devoid of the hysteria he clearly expects. My hands shake, but not from sorrow. It is pure, unfiltered rage and disgust. "I just buried my father today."

He flinches as if I struck him. Guilt flashes across his pale face, but his mouth just hangs open, stupid and useless, searching for a defense that does not exist.

"I came home early," my voice cracks, a raw edge of heartbreak bleeding through the cold facade, "because I needed you. I needed my partner to hold me after I put my dad in the ground." I point a shaking finger at the mattress. "And I walk in to find you fucking a stranger in our bed?"

He steps toward me, his hands raised in a useless gesture of surrender. "Please, just let me explain. I—"

"Do not touch me," I snap.

My voice cuts through the room, sharper than a knife. The mere thought of his hands on me now—the same hands that were just roaming all over that naked stranger—makes my skin crawl with revulsion.

His face twists into a mask of desperation. "It was a mistake! I was not thinking, I swear to God—"

I cross my arms tightly over my chest, shielding myself from his toxic presence. "Oh, a mistake? So your dick just magically slipped out of your pants and inside her? Is that how it happened?"

"Kira, please, listen to me—"

"Shut the hell up."

I drag in a jagged, uneven breath. My vision swims with unshed tears, but I refuse to let them fall. I refuse to give him the satisfaction of seeing me break down. I should be screaming at the top of my lungs. I should be shattering the lamps, clawing at his face, making him bleed the exact way he just made me bleed.

But the fire isn't there. Just a cold, spreading numbness. I am simply too shattered.

A foolish, naive part of me wants him to fight for me. To drop to his knees on the hardwood, to beg for forgiveness, to prove this is some twisted nightmare I can wake up from.

But I do not wake up. This is my life.

"You looked me in the eyes and said you loved me," I whisper into the heavy silence.

He swallows hard, his Adam's apple bobbing in his throat. "I do love you."

A bitter smirk pulls at the corner of my lips. "You have a sick way of showing it."

Silence settles over the bedroom. Yesterday, I might have fought for this relationship. I might have cursed him out and demanded answers. But right now? I am exhausted to my very core. Half my world shattered this morning at the cemetery, and Silas just took a sledgehammer to the remaining pieces. I am done.

I turn on my heel, my chest tight. I need to leave this suffocating apartment right now.

"Kira, wait!" Silas lunges forward, his hand clamping down hard on my wrist.

His grip is desperate and tight, but a sudden surge of adrenaline spikes through my veins. I yank my arm back with so much force that he loses his footing and stumbles backward.

Whatever lingering affection I had for this man evaporates into thin air. The love I felt for him dies right there on the bedroom floor.

I walk out of the apartment without a single backward glance, leaving him and our ruined future behind.

The drive back to my parents' house is a numb blur of passing headlights and endless stretches of dark asphalt. My mind is lost in a dense fog of grief. Just this morning, I stood under a gray sky, watching the casket lower into the ground, mourning the father I loved so deeply. I thought the worst part of my life was over the moment they tossed the dirt on his grave. I thought I would go home to the man I trusted, cry in his arms, and lean on the future we had built together. Now, both my father and my future are gone. Everything I knew, everything I clung to for stability, turned to ash in a single afternoon.

The house is pitch black when I step inside.

It feels unnerving and cold. The funeral was just this morning, yet it feels like an entire lifetime has passed since I stood by that grave. The familiar walls feel like they belong to a stranger's house, as if the building itself knows the broken woman walking through the foyer is not the same hopeful girl who left earlier.

I swallow the hard lump lodged in my throat. My heels click against the hardwood floor, the sound echoing loudly in the deafening silence.

"Mom?" I call out softly into the darkness.

No answer.

She has to be sleeping. I left her resting in her bedroom right after the service when I went to see Silas. God, I wish I had never gone. I wish I had stayed right here in the quiet safety of this house instead of walking into that horrific betrayal.

I rub my aching eyes, barely aware of the way my body shakes. The sheer physical and emotional exhaustion crashes into me like a freight train, making my limbs feel like lead.

One step. Then another. I walk toward the staircase, my fingers gripping the doorframe to steady myself.

Then, I glance toward the kitchen.

A choked, jagged gasp tears from my throat.

"Mom!"

She is collapsed on the cold linoleum floor near the kitchen island.

"Mom?" My voice is a frail, terrified whisper as I step closer.

She does not move.

The walls spin out of control around me. The floor tilts beneath my feet. Panic, sharp and icy, pierces straight through my chest. No. No, no, no. Not today.

I stumble forward, dropping to my knees so hard the impact sends sharp pain shooting up my shins. My hands tremble uncontrollably as I hover over her, terrified of what I might find. I press my shaking fingers against her neck, hunting for a pulse, checking for breath, for any sign of life.

Her skin is on fire.

"Mom, wake up!" I grip her shoulders, giving her a firm shake.

She is alarmingly limp. Her skin feels horribly clammy and damp with a sickening sweat, yet her core temperature is burning up. I stare at her pale face, looking for the steady rise and fall of her chest, but it is far too shallow. Her pulse is erratic and dangerously weak, fluttering like a dying moth beneath my fingertips.

As I shift her arm, the dim kitchen light catches on her skin. Little red, angry splotches stretch across her forearm.

Burns?

Where did these come from? They look like strange chemical burns, blistering against her pale skin. What in the world happened while I was gone?

"Mom! Please!" I shake her harder, my voice cracking into a desperate sob that echoes off the kitchen cabinets.

Nothing. Not a twitch. Not a sigh.

The air vanishes from my lungs. My chest caves in under the weight of sheer panic.

Please, God. Do not take her too. Not her. I cannot lose both of my parents in one day.

My pulse hammers against my eardrums, a roaring tidal wave of sound that drowns out the quiet house. Adrenaline floods my system. I dive for my purse, my clumsy fingers digging frantically past my wallet until I grip my phone. My vision blurs with thick tears, making the screen swim in a smear of light.

I punch in 911.

My heart thrashes against my ribs like a trapped bird. My throat tightens so much it hurts to breathe. Every second the phone rings feels like a grueling, endless eternity.

Answer. Please answer.

"911, what is your emergency?" a calm voice finally echoes through the speaker.

I choke back a harsh sob, forcing the words out through my panic. "My mother—she is unconscious on the floor. Please. You have to hurry."

The operator starts talking, firing off questions in a steady tone, but I can barely hear her over the roaring in my ears. I drop the phone onto the floor, putting it on speaker, and lean over my mother. I press my forehead against her feverish skin, my body shuddering with terror.

"Stay with me," I whisper into the quiet kitchen, the tears finally spilling over. "Please, Mom. Stay with me."
